Dr. J he yvholg truth ot the mailer is contained in these few words from the Kew'York Tribune : "Alter all the 'professed jackals and anonymous jaek fcSHes have 'finished disputing as to Garfield's character and purposes it is cot unlikely that decent people will conclude that it is, only another ver siun of the dead lion and his assail ants. The reporters who are always not log odd things, report that Methodist ministers are arriving at Chautauqua ,b every boat, but that few of them ' tile accompanied by their wives or any lady members of f ir families. Various inferences are rawu from this. Ou is, that the ministers pre fer to travel for pleasure; another, that their wives know the absentees .can be trusted alone ; another that the wives prefer to take their summer ' vacation in this way. The most cor rect inference is probably the tact that the demands of Chautauqua over- , size the wallets of a class of men. who . are, as a rule, irregularly aad scantily paid. Franklin Press. TriE Pittsburg Ditpatch publishes an interview with Chairman McKee, of the Independent State Committee, in which' the "boss" ef that '.party makes some statements of the inteii' tious of his political associates for the future, breathing defiance of tbe "old machine," but closing with an assur ance of confidence in the purity of the Republican nominees this year, and the belief that tbe great body of the Independents will give tbem their votes. This is mainly of interest be- cause tbcf Democratic organs persist in claiming that the Independents are Dot harmonized and that they contin ue to be assistant Democrats, claims that Mr. McKee's statement complete ly refute. Brookville Republican. James Nutt is to be tried for the murder of Dukes a week from to-mor row. The prosecution is to be con ducted by District Attorney Johnson, assisted by the Messrs. Boyle and the defense by W. II. Playford and A. D, Boyd. The case is set down for trial at Uniontewn, but it is probable a change of venue will be asked for, as the farce of the Dukes trial is stiU fresh in the memories of the public, and there is good reason te doubt whether the boy can have a fair show for his life in the 6ame cammunity which acquitted his father's murderer and his sister's destroyer. While there is no doubt that James Nutt did the deed there are extenuating cir cumslances, in the minds of many peo' pie, which call for a very light sen tence. The Philadelphia Record, a dimo cratic sheet with independent tenden titi, and that has had ample opportu nity ef knowing the make up of that party, is not pleased with the platform adopted at the recent Harrisburg con elave, giving utterance to its convict ions in the following forcible terms "If ot a journal nor an orator among the valient defenders of Democracy in Pennsylvania raises a voice of re buke or remonstrance against the dodging platform which was reared by the State Convention for the party to stand on. Yet this platform is at distinct variauce with the creed of the party as enunciated at the last three National Conventions, and as illus- trated in the history cf the Democrat ic Federal administration. The truth is the leaders of the Democratic party ia Pennsylvania are brevet-Kepubli cans. They are political eunuchs who have lobt the vitality and force that make them capable of doing either math gooJ or bad in the world." SEPTEMBER 18th, 1883.
