The contract for building the new court house at Clarion was recently let to P. 11. Melvin, of Franklin, at a cost of $88,370. This gentleman is now engaged in building the ufw St. Michael's church at Fryburg. Monday while Zach. Shriver was driving down Elm St. with a load of building stone Ed. Heibel's little boy in some manner got in front of the horses and full down between the team, and before Zach. noticed him he bad driven the entire length of the wagon, but very luckily the little fellow escaped unhurt. Stone are being taken out for the bridge at Hickory, and as soon as the company can decide on the exact lo cation we presume the work of building piers and abutments will begin. Our Hickory friends will be nicely fixed when the structure is Unshed. What has become of our base ballists? There's a splendid ground now on Hunter's Island, and ought to be improved by our tossers. P. S. The foregoing was writton yesterday forenoon, and in the afternoon the shouts of "send 'er home 1" greeted our ears from the island. Mr. and Mrs. Charles Bonner re turned from their wedding tour last Thursday evening. "The band" turn ed out in full force and gave. them a serenade, to which Charlie responded handsomely. Tbey will commence housekeeping in Mr. B.'s elegant resi dence in a couple of weeks. On Monday evening last, about nine o'clock a young man named Welsh, a clerk in Haz'etine's drug store at Warren, was drowned in tho Alleghe ny river at that place. His body had not been recovered yesterday morning although a large number of men bad been dragging the river through the night. Mr. Carpenter, our photo artist, has secured somo assistance in the per son of a Mr. Smith, of Titusville, who has had large experience in the photo graphic line, aud he now intends driv ing the business with greater vim than ever. Mr. 6. brings his wife and will become a permanent resident of our place. Mr. II. II. Keeler, stopped in town over night last Wednesday. He is now engaged in the new oil field at Macksburg, Ohio, where he has a 600 acre Uase on which he has just finished a good well. His chances for realiz ing a handsome thing out of his new venture are good we are pleased to lea),. V-Messers II. M. Clark O. D. Glenn and G. R. Brown, of Tidioute, struck Tionesta Monday, having in toff sev eral barrels of fish caught on their way down the river. They shipped their cargo on the traiu yesterday morning and now we presume the fish market of Tidioute will be drugged for the next forty-eight hours. Grass cutting is all the go when the weather is fit, but it's peskey few days in the week that such is the case and unless the weather grows better that is, dryer there will be lively times in the harvest field, as the work will all come in a) bunch. The crops are all very good this year,' if only tbey can be garnered in geod condi tion. Herman Skultz, who has been at work on John Charlson's bark job at Salmon Creek, met with a painful ac cident ou Thursday last. A falling hemlsck tree struck anotherand broke the top off which remained baoging. Mr. Shultz not thinking it would fall weut under it and began spudding the hemlock when the top aforesaid came down striking him on the back aud bruising him severely though uot dan gerously. Williams, teacher of Tubhs Run School, makes the following re port for tho month ending July 9: No. enrolled, males 13, females 10; average attendance, males 9, females 8; per cent, of attendance, males 84, females 77; visitors 10, including Co. Supt. Hillard. The following pupils are best in attendance and progress: Eva and Emma Kiser, A'inie and Em ma Vockroth, Minna and Ada Cropp, William Weingard, Susie Blum and Floieuce Kiser. The results of the last tornado in Nebrabka, Kansis, Missouri, Iowa and Illinois are thus summed up by the New York Sun: "Trains blown from the track, a circus tent torn to shreds and the animals let loose, churches and mills tumbling to fragments; lambs and calves killed by the hail; corn crops cut into fragments ; villa ges laid in ruins ; limbs broken ; lives lost was the equal of this year's suc cession of hurricanes at the West ever set forth ?" Yes, go West, yeung man, and blow up with the country." A new plan for the safety of reg istered letters has been submitted to Postmaster General Gresham for adop tion. It is a metallic substitute for the gummed flap, and is a rivet made of a compound of hard metals which is flattened by compression after the en velope is filled aud cannot be removed except by the mutilation of the en velope. It is said to be simple and effective. This new device enables the theft to be detected by the first hands the package reaches after being broken open and fixes the guilt at once. Brother Carlisle of the Clarion Jacksonian, who never misses tho mark to auy great exteut, mutters thusly: "The difference. Some of those fine days Co. Oil Notes. -.' .Tber is nothing startling from the Forest county oil field this week. It is stated that Ball town Oil Co.'s Nn. 4, tract 4,792 was opened Sunday afternoon, and' began flowing at five o'clock. The first twelve hours it made ninety barrels. In the next two hours It put ten barrels in the tank. Drilling continued and the well de clined to four barrels an hour. At three o'clock Monday afternoon they were twelve feet in the sand. A gauge taken of the Balltown field Fiiday last shnwed the production to be 2,285 barrels per day. Auchor No. 7 is down and showing for a 150 barrel well. The Tubbs Run well is still drilling and the indications are that it will be finished the latter part of this or the first of next week. We are unable to learn its depth. The rig and tools used to drill tho well on the David Walters farta near Newmanville last spring, were hauled through town yesterday and the well abandoned. There is still considera ble gas escaping from the hole. Kellettville Krumbs. The 4th of July passed by with us as it usually doe3 in small towns like ours ; the anvil was fired at intervals from the evening of the 3rd until late in the night of tha 4th and from the appearance of some of the men some thing stronger than water was drunk, Although there are no saloons in this place and liquor is not sold in any form it finds its way iu here occasion ally, aud the nights are made hideous from the yells and vulgar language of those under the influence of it, but we are happy to say that the number that so degrade themselves is quite small. . Since our last letter to your paper quite a number of visitors have been noticed iu our town. Miss ABna Jackson, of Tioueeta, was the guest of Mrs. C. M. Whitemau for a few days. J. B. Hagarty and family spent the week of the fourth with their pareuts Mr. and Mrs. L. Aruer. W. W. Kellett paid a flyiug visit to Kellettville looking after his inter est here. Mr. and Mrs. II. W. Ledebur were the guests of L. Arner and family over Sunday. The school house is about finished, and we hope by next writing to. be ablo to report a school in progress. The Presbyterian services in this place have beeu very interesting to those that have attended, and we are sorry to learn that Rev. Hays will not be with us but one Sabbath more All that attended tho Picnic on Whig Hill the 4ih have pronounced it a very pleasant afiair. Rev. Hays will preach his farewell sermon in this place July 22, at half past three o'clock p. m. Miss May Sloan, teacher of the Minister school, was visiting friends iu Kellettville Friday and Saturday of the present week.
