Clarion is making big calcula tions on celebrating tho coming Fourli of July, in a grand old fashioned, style. Clarion is noted for its success in such undertakings, and we presume this one will add to her reputation in that line. Mr. M. E. Hess, who spent last winter in Forest county "teaching the young ideas how to shoot," departed for hi home in Saody Lake, Pa., last week, bearing with him the good wish es of many friends made duriug his stay with us. "Golden Days" for June is out with its customary supply of choice literature for the young folks. This magazine occupies tbe front rank, and should be in the hauds of all young readers. James Elrcrson, Publisher, Philadelphia, Pa. j Mr. R. J. Flynn of this county accompanied by two other gentlemen, started for Manitoba yeUertfuy, where they will engage in the lumber busi ness. We leant they expect to go into the mill being erected in that section by L. L. llacket, formerly of this county. Corn planting has been some what retarded in this aectiou by the coti&uexl wet weather. A couple of weeks ago seme of our more anxious farmers planted their corn, but are now obliged to do it over again. Po tatoes fared about the same. Other crops, in the . meantime, art looking and doing well. Rev. John Pesite delivered his popular and highly entertaining lect ure entitled, "Travels in Egypt," to the people of Red Brush, this county, on Monday evening last, the meeting being held in Watson A Root's mill. A very large audience was present, aad all were very much pleased with the lecture, and speak in -the highest praise of the entertainment. Tbe "wise men of the east" are getting the fishing business down so fine now-a-days that we presume the next atep will be to compel the festive angler to catch his fish by haed, and with kids on at that. Tbe card of the East Hickory Hotel appears in our paper this week. Kant Hickory has long felt the need of a regular hotel, aud has perhaps lest cousideiable custom on accoult of the lack of one. Mr. J. W. Ball is the proprietor, and has a new house and furnished throughout with new furniture. The traveling public wiln Mud it a pleasant stopping place, an 4 no doubt will take pleasure in patron i.iug the new hotel. We bespeak for Wea. a good run of custom. , The protracted spell of sour and sloshy May weather now existing has a tendency to Blarl old residenters to talking about the ''cold summer" of 1816, when frost and auow we're re ported every mouth of the year, and ice formed ia the dog-days. If the sun doesu't soon get a chance there's a poor prospect lor fruit and vegetation, aud we're likely to be confined to a summer diet of fried icicles, hail pie and enow chowder, thinks the Frank lin iVc. We learn from reliable inform ation of the death of Joseph Sham burg, eldest son of Dr. Shamburg of West Hickory, by a nitro glycerine explosion. Some months ago he went to Bay City Mich., where he engaged in the manufacture of the explosive, and on Friday af last week the magazine was blown up and Mr. Shambarg's body was literally torn to pieces. We are unable to give fuller parlicualrs at this writing Joe was a young man of very pleas ing address, and wasvery highly es teemed by all who knew hiui . Monday's Dr.rrirk hn this: Anchor Oil Company will complete their Nos. 19 and 24 this week, and probably No. G. Clark, Murphy St Breneman's, on 3,108, is also set d3wn for ibis week'. Merrick No. 4 should be heard from about Wednesday, and if the gas does not interfere too much Patterson Nos. 7 and 8, will bo completed. In the Balltwn district Welsh's No. 2 ami Balltown Oil Company's No. 7 may be expected in. The pooduction of the Cooper tract Friday was le?8 than 4,000 barrels. This' is over 700' bar rels le?s than a week aga. Since the abovo was in type the following additional facts are reported: Anchol Oil Co 'a No. G ou 2735 struck the Bind last night and is showing for a good well. Its location is northeast of No. 4 and ou a good line with other large producers. " In the first six hours it made 200 barrels, or at the rate of over 33 barrels an hour. At noon to day it was flowing at the rate of 20 barrels an hour. Thin1 well proves that oil is the second sand does not prove the third sand is barren, because this well would have made a fair second sand producer. Anchor's No. 24 was completed Saturday. It made 330 barrels the first 24 hours. Fertig & Henue's No. 3, on the En terprise Transit Co's trett, is in the saud, and is showing for 100 barrels the first 24 hours. Clark, Murphy & Brenoeman's well on 3,198 tapped the sand Saturday, aud has filled up GOO feet. This well is located 900 feet west of Union No. 10, and abnu the same distance northwest of Murphy's ' Ns. 2. Tbe Hoodoo Oil Company's wildcat venture in the western part of Forest county, on tract 3.G68, has be ea drilled below the level' of the Bradford sand atd abandoned. . The- Casing' was being pulled al it. to-day. The Tubbs Rup' we'll is still drilling, but what depth they have renvhed, or just when they expect to "reach the bottom" we are unable to learn; pev-' haps teu days will see them pretty close to oil, or nothing, at the present rate of speed. The Derrick arrives at the following sensible conclusion ; There is at pro sent a growing feeling among all classes of oil tnou against the manner in which the wildcat wills' are manipulated. This feeling except in extreme cases, does not attack the right of the pro ducer to mystify his well for bis own benefit, until be ascertains its condit. ion ; but it does assert that the custom of keeping a well haDging over, the trade for days and weeks is unjust and unbusinesslike. The producer has a right to handle his property as be sees fit. It is a recognized tight, and there is no law to compel him to change his course. But the great oil trade has rights which should be respected as well. What benefit is it to an operator to shut a well down on top of the sand and keep it there for days or weeks as perpetual menace to the trade? He knows no more about it than the pub lic, bnt his act unsettles values ; keeps purchasers and sellers out of the mar ket; creates an artificial price; makes business uncertain; destroy confidence in legitimate trade; drives' outsiders away, and leads them to look upon oil men as a set of rascals. It really creates a false impression af the oilmen aud the oil busiuess, aud injures it iu more ways than one. While we re cognize tbe right of a single producer to do as he will with bis property; we ako recognize that there are rights belonging to thousands of other indi viduals, and the rights of piillioas of dollars worth ot property, which are of greater importance in the agregste than those of the single individual, and which demand that the absurd manipulations of wildcat wells should be criticised as they deserve.
