Tho huut is a sure "go" next Sat urday. The sides have been chosen, and between S3 and 40 will taka part which will make it rather an excitittg huut. Shot guns are in demand. Wm, Killmer has lumber on the ground lor the erection f a new dwelling house to be built this season. His lot is sjituute near the Wagner house, in rear of tho public square. Messrs. A. Wieso and J. W. Wiley, of Allegheny City, two of the owners of the Balltown territory, were in town this wtek, looking tho picture f happiness over the new strike at that place. We le arn from Bev. Hicks that a grove meeting will be held at Whig Hill, commencing on Friday evening, Sept. 15th, and cootinue three days, A more extended notice will ba pub lished next week. Lost week we spoke of a rattle snake having been slain which meas ured 4 feet 6 inches, but a son of Mr. Rudolph of Newtown, comes to the front with one measuring just five feet. This is plenty large for all practical purposes, and we don't ask any ono to beat it. The Saltsburg Press is the latest victim that has been "gulled" byGuil mettes French Kidney Pad "ad." We sympathize with our friends of the iVess, but if they had consulted our paper a year or so ago they would have seen that fraud exposed. To the managers of the Jefferson County Industrial Exposition, which is to take placa Sept. 19, 20, 21 and 22, and to those of the Venango county Agricultural Society, our thauks are due for complimentaries. It is confidently ex pected that in 90 days trains will be running up Tionesta Creek. The new strike at Balltown has given tho pro ject new life, and the company will push the work with all the vigor pos sible. Jim. Welsh, whose interests in Balltown are destined to make him a wealthy roan, came near being sent to eternity Saturday, by the accidental discharge of a Winchester rifle. The ball passed through his nhirt just grazing the Bkin on his left side, and lodged in one of ihe rig timbers. We hopo Jim will bo more cautious in the future, and live long to enjoy his newly acquired fortune. Messrs. Carson, Foreman, Shoe maker iftid Fones who built the platform will give a dance on Friday afternoon, Oct. 8th, at platform, and at the Lawrence House Hall in the eve ning. A general invition is extended, aud if the weather is favorable those who attend may expect a royal time. A good band of music will bo in at tendance. Don't miss it if you want an enjoyable time. Remember tho day and dto, Friday Oct. 8th. Mr. T. D. Collins has in process of erection a splendid mansion at his Nebraska mills. We have not learned the exact dimensions, but un derstand it will be tho largest and fineet dwelliug in the county. Mason Joyce has tho stone work in contract, aud is at present engaged thereon. No citizen of our county is better able than Mr. Collins to build such a resi dence, and we are glad to see him thus permanently improving the county. Mr. Geo. Scott, of Marionvillo, was iu town yesterday, and from him we learn the pleasing Dews that that town and vicinity is lively, and grow ing rapidly. Mr. Maudcrville's hub factory is about completed, much of the niachinoiy being already in posi tion. New dwellings are springing up rapidly, and everything indicates a lively growth for the place. We hope to hear of Marionville making appli cation for a borough charter era long, and we believe she will bo able to do so in a short timo. The "Northern Lights" came down from Buck Mills on Saturday last and played with the Red, White and Blues of this place, but the rain stopped the game after five iunings had been played, at which stage tbe score stood 11 to 6' in favor of tbe N. L.'s. There was considerable loud talk after the game was over, which finally ended in a bet of $15 to $10 that a club could ba picked up in Tio nesta that could get away with the Buck Mill boys, and a game was ar ranged for Saturday, Sept. 9, which will doubtless be a red hot one. Let all the surviving comrades of the 83d regiment, us well as all old sol diers in this section, remember that the reunion of that famous regiment takes place at Warren next Tuesday, Sept. 5th. The fare has been greatly re duced for this occasion only 81.40 for the round trip and tho trains run so conveniently that all should avail themselves of the opportunity of at tending and ha v rag a royal time. The citizens of Warren are making exten sive preparations to receive the veter ans in splendid style, and all indica tions point to a grand, goad time. Train leaves Tionesta at 7:24 a. in. and returns at 8:08 p. m. For tremulousness, wakefulness, dizziness, and lack of energy, a most valuable remedy is Browu's Irou Bitters. In answer to a telegram received from W. II. Dunn on Wednesday last, Mr. R. I). Iloskins departed Friday for Crookston, Minnessota, to accept a position on one of Mr. Dunn's papers in that country. While we regret to have Rob. loavo us, we nevertheless cau sincerely w:sh him the success which is sure to come to a young man of energy, ability and good morals in that bustling and rapidly growing counliy, which bill Mr. Iloskins ad mirably fills. Rob will be much missed by the young people of Tio nesta, with whom he was a favorite, and of whom quite a number were at the depot to bid him good bye. The good wishes of all attend you, Rob. Capt. Knox has in project a scheme, which, if carried out will make every man who takes an interest in it the owner of a building lot in Tionesta borough. His plan is, to buy ofG.G. Sickles all the available lots owned by him some 225 iu all and then sell tickets to that number, each ticket entitling the holder to one lot, the price of the tickets to be ono hundred dollars. Of course, all the lots would not be first-class, but none of them but what would bo worth nearly, if not quite that amount, and many of them would be worth double and treble that figure. On getting tbe choicest lots all would stand an equal chance in the lottery. Warantee deeds will be made to every purchaser of a ticket, and the one buying will be at no other expense Bave the recording of his deed. The Captain is working tbe matter up and has already a num ber of tickets spoken for, and ds soon as the required number is disposed of the drawing will take place. In these days of mysteries all kinds of plans are laid to get a sight into the tanks, the deirick, or even get within Bmelling distance of the rig, and some of the devices resorted to by tbe scouts are novel and cun ning. Oneof the coolest wo have yet heard of was played by Jim II. Hu lings of this place, which took place at the Shannon well on Cooper tract re cently. The well, as all know, has been heavily guarded, and to pass the "pickets" was next to impossible for an outsider to perforin. Jim had been watching bis c'lance for some time, until a teamster happeued along with a load of lumber for the well. This was a bonanzi for Jim, who offered the teamster five dollars to allow him tbe privilego of driving the lumber to the rig; tho offer was accepted, and the two exchanged garments all round, and Jim drove in without molestation and took a good look at the well, tanks, and things in general. It seems when the public is bent on finding out a secret, that secret is bound to come out somo way or other. Brookston Brevities. rioase allow us, through your col umns, to congratulate Curtis on his entree into married life. Curt, I guess you were out "girling" that night, as the boys accused you. Peaches, Melons, Sweet Potatoes, eating aud cooking apples, &c, this week at Wm. Sniearbaugh & Co. BALLTOWN S BIG WELL. No little excitement was created in oil circles last Friday by the report that the Grandio, Berry & Kelly well at Balltown had struck it big. Of course reports were exaggerated, but when "things kind quieted down," as it were, the truo state of affairs was soon ascertained. The very lowest estimate that has been placed on the well, is 60 barrrels, and it ranges from that figure to 100 aud 200. Tho well at present is thought to be plugged, and still the output of oil is large, and it would not be surprising to learn that the production would reach 500 barrels when let loose. But the own ers can be satisfied if it reaches the lowest estimate, as they own nearly all the territory for miles around. Tbe well is located about 200 rods up a small stream called Brush Camp, which empties into Tionesta creek a short distanco below Balltowu proper, and is considerably west of any other well put down on that property. The stream is bo full of oil that one would i n i i . i . . .. naruiy kdow wueiner it was an oil or water stream. The lumbermen at Buck Mills, thrie or four miles down the creek, are obliged to run out booms to keep the oil from mixing with the logs in tbe pond, which would indicate that there is no email quan tity going to waste. That the well is a big one and that a new and, doubt less, prolific territory has been found there is no room to doubt. Those of the owners whom we hav9 seen wear very pleasant countenances, and seem happy in the thought that at last they hav struck the jugular vein. Jas. Welsh, the contractor who put down tbe well was fortunate enough to secure a lease of 200 acres, which is closo to the new gusher. Si ace the Btrike we understand he has been offered $50,000 for his interests. AT BEAVER VALLEY, Grove, Hart & Co.. expeot to finish tbe well at which they are drilling some day this week. Of course no one knows what the prospects for oil are. TIONESTA. The rig for the well above the creek bridge at this place is up and drilling is expected to commence this week. Two weeks will probably bo occupied in finishing the well. The Derrick this morning says that it was reported by several persons on the street last night that the wildcat well on tho Payne farm, a mile and a half north of Tylersburg, Clarion sounty, would be opened to-day. Two of the ownerj came down to Tionesta, from Warren, last night, and it is pre sumed they were on their way to that point. The well is located near the north line of Clarion- county, and about ten miles southeast of Tionesta. Jury List Sept. Term 1882. GRAND JURORS. . Hickory Twp. N. P. Wheeler, Foreman, Jas. Walt Whitman's Leaves of Grass The edition of Walt Whitman's .T r i m . . i - i much has been written on account of the abandonment of its publication by a Boston firm in conpequenee of Mr. Anthony Comstock's allegations that it contained objectionable passages, has been issued by Rees, Welsh &Co., Philadelphia. The book contains so much true poetry, so many passages which stamp their author ns a true poet of a high, though certainly not of the highest order, that it is a pity that Mr. Whitman's own good sense bus not moved him long ago to cut out tie "Children of Adam" words and lines, which add nothing at all to the beauty of his work and which certainly are not structural and viral to it.
