The would-be assassin will doubtless
try the insane dodge, but te will
doubtless be disposed of in short order.

.N.. . The nominations of Ex Senator
Conkling for Supreme Justice of the
" . TJnited States, and Ex-Senator Sar-
'feso'v, of California, for Minister to
Germany, have been confirmed by the
Senate. Mr. Coukling has not as yet
signified his intentions, and it is not
r known whether or not he will accept
the position.
The greatest walking match ever
held, if time and distance is tconsid
ered, came 'to a close od Saturday
night last. It lasted six days, and
was won by a man named Haezel, who
made the unequaled ecore of 600 miles
in that time. The other contestants
and their ecores were as follows: Fitz
gerald 577 miles, Noremac 555, Hart
542, Hughes 535, Sullivan 525. The
gate money amounted to $30,000,
which will be divided among the six
men.

The Prohibitionists are the first in
the field in this. State with a ticket.
Their Convention met at Altoona on
the 15th ult., and made the following
nominations : Governor, A. C. Pettitt,
Lawrence county ; Lieutenant Gov
ernor, Albion Williams, Chester
county ; Secretary of Internal Affairs,
Ezra Crossman, McKean county ;
Judge of the Supreme Court, S. P.
Chase, of Susquehanna connty. S. P.
McCalmont, of Venango county, was
nominated for Congressman-at large.
Woman suffrage received a partial en
dorsement in the organization of the
State Committee.
The Democrat of last week has the
following compliment for Judge Cook.
Should the Judge be so fortunate as
to get the nomination in this District,
he will be elected by a rousing major
tj: Mr. Cook U a very fine grutleraan,
a good business man and is laigely
idenuEeti with the lumber interests of
this" and adjoining couuties. For a
long time back we have heard his
name mentioned in connection with
this office, by prominent lcmbermen
of Clarion, Forest and Jefferson
counties. Although not or our polit
ical faith, we must say that the Re
publicans can not bring out a better
man in this district than just Mr
Cook.
The new apportionment bill which
has passed Congress fixes the number
of Representatives at 325. The States
whose representation will be afftcted
by th! increase in the membership of
the House are twenty five iu number.
The gains will be as follows : Arkan
sas from 4 to 6, California from 4 to G,
Georgia from 9 to 10. Illinois from 19
to 20, Iowa from 8 to 11, Kansas from
3 to 7, Kentucky from 10 to 11, Mass
achusetts from 11 to 12, Michigan
from 9 to 11, Minnesota from 3 to 5,
Mississippi from 6 to 7, Missouri from
13 to 14, Nebraska from 1 to 3, New
York 33 to 34, North Carolina from 8
to 9, Ohio from 20 to 21, Pennsylva
nia from 27 to 28, South Carolina
from 5 to 7, Texas from 6 to 11, Vir
ginia from 3 to 4, aud Wisconsin from
8 to 9. The looses will be as fullowg :
Maine from 5 to 4, New Hampshire
from 3 to 2, and Vermont from 3 to 2.
