Chairman lirockway has addressed letters to each of tho members of tho Kepublican County Committee, noti fyiaj tliero of a meeting to bo held, at the La'vrcnca House, next Friday, Oct. 7th, at 1 o'clock p. m. This will bo a very importaut meeting and it ia earnestly desired that every town ship BhouUl be represented. At this meeting a name will bo placed on tho ticket for the offieo of Jury Coramiss ioaer, and a general and thorough or ganization for the campaigu be effected. It ia therefore hoped that all the mem bers of the Committee will be ia at tendance. Don't fail to be on hand. The fund for Mrs. Garfield and family has reached $334,679. President Arthur will bo fifty one years of age to-day, October 5th. ; The public debt statement shows a decrease in the national debt for the month of September of $17,433,641. (It was touchiugly said of Presi dent Garfield's suffering and death : "There is no language io which peti tions Lave not arisen for his life, and no clime where teaw have not fallen lor his death." KCX The Democrats of this State nomin ated Orange Noble, of Erie, a3 their candidate tor State Treasurer, at "Williamsport lust week. About tho only thing brought out in his favor thus far is that h8 has a "bar'J." The Demecratic platform calls loudly for reform, but the sort of re form ihat the State neods is not Dem ocratic refornf. Pennsylvania had a ta?to of that, when Noyea ffas State Treasurer. The present State Treas urer tells some queer tales as to tho condition in which he found tho ac counts of tho department when ho took hold of it. An eloquent devine on Sunday drew nne of the most important lessons from the life of General Garfield for the consideration of young men from the sentiments, "He was not ashamed to work." It underlies all the grand structure of his life. Ho did not sit idly on the street corners and cry out for more wages and fewer hours, and refuse to labor unless his demands were met. Whether it was the pit tance of 8 per month on the canal, a slender income as a teacher in a log school house, or a generous allowance as a general of the army or a legisla tor, he was tt all times earnest and diligent.- Allegheny Mail. TnE Fall campaign has now been inaugurated and the triangular fight commenced. Tho outlook i3 not bo bright for tho Democracy as it was before their recent convention at Williamsprt. Had either Plumer, Davis or Kerr been the nomiaco there would have beon but little doubt that tb next State treasurer of Pennsylva nia would have been a Democrat, but taking the weak&st man of the quar tette, as they did, in Orange Noble, Esq., the situation is changed consid erably fur tho worae. It looks now as if Charlie Wolf would draw away a good deal of strenglh frem tho Demo- crats, as well as the Republicans, for their i an element ia that party as heartily opposed to machine rule as any dissatisfied Itepublicau and they will naturally drift together, support ing au independent candidate as an exponeut of their disliko to machine politics iu general. We havo not opousod the eitiso of either of the candidates, nor has the Derrick determined to tako up tho cudgels for any of them, but do not bind ourselves to neutrality or action, hut as we desire to etc the next Slaio Treasurer a man of Fuoh sterling char acter ns will guarantee to the people of our State a thoroughly boned ad ministration, we will look into tho fit ness of these apiraut9 for tho position and support tho one we think will fill the place tho most acceptably, without regard to political prejudices. 0(7 City Derrick. rc Garfield's Premonition. Cleveland, September 21. Tho fact that tho dead President took leave of his home with sorrow iu which in definite forebodings wers mingled, ha3 often beeiralluded to. Tho feeling is shown very clearly in a letter which he wrote just after tho last November elections : Mentor, Ohio, November 8, 18SL My Dear Hudson : Yours of tho 5th inst., cania duly to hand, and was read with satisfaction. I believe all my friends aro rooro gratified with the personal part of my triumph than 1 nm, and although 1 am proud of tho noble support 1 have received, and tbo vindication it gives me against my assailants, yet there is a tono of sadness running through this triumph which I can hardly explain. Mrs. (jarueld loins mo in kind re gards. , very truly yours, J. A. Garfield. W. N. HUD30N, Esq.. Colorado Camping. I Camp, Xoutii Fark, Cot.o., September 15, 1SSI. Ed. Rkpublican: It being too cold to work in tho field, ami fooling lonesome for something to do I will write you a "stickfull" or two. AVo havo succeeded in getting down from tho Hummit at Muddy Pass and out through tho canons ol Grizzly Crook, and are now in a lino open plain known aa North Fark. AVo havo crossed the Conti nental Bivido and tho "Backbone" of America is far off to tho west of u:i prob ably twentj miles, while tho Park Range is cast of us about one hundied milts, al though plainly visible with tho naked eye, even unto tho stratification of rock con tained in their almost perpendicular sides so puro and rare is the atmosphere. AA'o are at an elevation of S009 feet above tho ocean lovel at our present encampment. Last night tho mercury registered o below nothing and to-day it stood at 19 in tho sun. How is that for sudden changes in Sept. ? It freezes every night in tho year. No timber to speak of except a few straggling patches of our common custom aspen and Rocky Mountain spvuco a species of pine- midway botwoen our whito pino and hemlock. Thcro aro no minerals to speak of in this immediate vicinity; this being a volcanic region wo find scarcely anything but "brimstone'' or mud lava and other igenous rocks. AVo have some splendid specimens, however, of small fragmento of pellucid quartz and other forms of stratified and pumary rocks. Tho water is n ot good in this, section at all. It is highly impregnated with alkali ; so much so that after washing ones hands in tho water and allow it to dry an incrus tation of alkali is visiblo on tho smoother parts of tho hands ; this is creek water, I mean. In tho cast wo read of the splendid water in the Rocky Mountains. I would sooner h ave one good old Forest county sand stone spring than a dozen '"Rocky" springs. In tho plains tho water is all impregnated with alkali, and in tho mountains with arsenic, as mott of it flows through carbonates and arsenics of copper and arsenics of lead before reach ing the surfaco. Tho same hubbub is also rifo about tho mines. I traveled over lr0 miles through tho best mining region of Colorado, and as our wagon train was very slow I had ample opportunity to in spect tho beat mines anil will keep up with our wagons. None of them como up to what tho peoplo aro accustomed to read and think of thetn in Pennsylvania. I havo read of mines, tho ore of which us-saj-od COOO ounces to tho ton of silver, and 50 per cent, of lead. AA'ell, theso samo mines assay instead, 110 ounces of silver and about 3o per cent, of leud. Colorado is not half the State it In represented to bo, although I am hardly competent to judge having been in it but so short a timo. AA'e havo very poor mailing facilities in this country. Ono hundred miles from Larirnie City, AV. T., and seventy from Troublesome, a post oirico on tho Grande, a tributary to the Rio Colorado of tho west, so if you don't get this until Christ mas don't blame mo. All tho mail we get is what is brought in by tho Denver A Rio Graudo ruilway company's carriers. Among tho most welcome news received by me since I have beon out bore was a letter from our townsman, D. AV. Clark, Esq., whom I hero tako occasion to most heartily thanic for tho newsy, interesting letter.
