"The Family Medical Abstract
for April," Dr. A. F. McKay, Editor,

amount of good, common sense reading
matter. The Abstract costs but $l.o0

The forest fires destroyed a great
deal of the fence around widow Dean's
'far.n on Whig Hill lately, and 'twas
only by hard work tht other property
was saved. The good old lady is
thankful that the fires are all out now
and that her loss wa9 no greater.
Decoration day comes next Sat
urday, but it seems there will be no
observance of the day in this place.
It would certainly be as little as the
citizens could do to at least gather at
the cemetery and strew a few flowers
over the graves of the dead heroes,
and not allow this beautiful rite to die
oui entirely iu our place.
-iTho rains of last week nave
brightened up nil nature in this sec
tion, and crops are beginning to look
well. The "round had become so dry
that grass and all other crops were
looking sad and wilted, but the rain
gave all a new start, and there is now
good promise of more than an average
harvest of grain and fruits.
Mr. Robinson has done the square

Hauling is brisk here at present
and from thirty io forty teams may be
seen on our street almost every day
loaded with pipe and staves. Tl
Railroad company is also doing a good
business, the freight receipts at this
station amounting to several thousand
dollars a week, to say nothing of the
large amount of stave3 which are daily
exported from here.
We are sorry to learn that our
old friend and patron, Mr. Solomon
Byers, who lived in the Mealy Settle-
meit, has left the county ana rnoveu
to Stoneham, Warren Co. Mr. Byers
is an excellent citizen, and will be
quite a loss to our county in general,
an the Republican party in particular.
We wish him prosperity in his uew
home.
Morris Einstein left for Nw
York last Friday where, after attend
ing to some business, he will take pass
age across the pond to see his old
home and friends. Now, we won t
swear that this is the case, because
Morris has fooled us so often that we
hardly know whether to believe him
now or not. We wish him a pleasant
and safe voyage if he does, but if he
don't go we don't care whether he gets
drowned or nut.
The Hanlan-Courtney boat race
at Washington, D. C, on Wednesdiy
last was nnolher grand fizzle, so to
speak. Both oarsmen started, but
Courtney weakened on the first quar
tergot sick as he claims and gave
up the race. Ilanlan rowed leisurly
over the course and took the prize.
This winds up Courtney's rowing
career effectually.

Edenburg, Clarion Co.. was cre
mated for the fourth time on Saturday
nicht last. The fire was the work q
nn inrondinrv as usual. The entire
business portion of the town was 'de
stroyed, entailing a loss of nearly
ninety thousand dollars. Very few
dwellings were burned, consequently
the distress among the inhabitants has
not been so great as at previous fires.
It is not l'kely the place will be built
up again. Verily Edeuburg has
passed through many trials and tribu
lations.
Mr. Hamilton Stow, of Cincin
nati, accompanied by his daughter,
Mrs. Ida Garlick, and two children,
arrived in town on Friday last, and
are the cucsts of Mr. May's family.
Mr. Stow was among the early citizens
of Tionesta, and a great deal of the
prospeiity and growth of the place,
both in morals and otherwise, was due
to his energy. He is now seventy-four
years old, and although quite feeble,
bids fair to live several years yet
which his many old friends in this
community will be glad to learn.
As will be seen by the double
column advertisement in- this issue,
Dr. Jas. L. Thayer's Gieat Show will
exhibit in Tiocesta, June 1st, 1880.
The mere mention of Dr. Thayer's
name in connection with a circus is
sufficient to draw n crowd among the
older inhabitants, he having been con
nected mauy years with Thayer &
Noyesreat circus. -:This show em
braces many new features never before
exhibited in this community, notable
the Wonderful Electric Light, which
is worth going miles to see. Its per
formers are among the Desi on me
continent, and altogether it is aid to
)e one of the best shows extant. I he
outfit of this grand show is entirely
new, this being the first seasou it has
ever heen in use. Those who waut to
witness a truly great show should lay
aside their work and make a general

principal features of the show will be

body. Both burses were knocked
down, and one of them was so badly
injured lhat ho will probably be uufit
for further use. The remains of the
deceased were taken to his home and
buried on Saturday. He was about
twenty two years of tige ami unmarried.
He had alwuy hon e the reputation
