The date of the Free Methodist Campmeeting in this place has been fixed for July 21st. lhe attendance will doubtless bo much larger than last year. Payne's mill near Tylersburg was burned proved to be a canard, and the mill will probably do a good stroke of bus iness before the summer is ended. Sankey and John oble have gone to work on the new saw mill of Dr. Shamburg, near NeilHown. The Doctor will find them rattling good hands. The General Quarterly Meeting ot the Free Methodist Church will be held at East Hickory, commencing on Thursday, May 27th, and continuing nver Sunday. Rev. Hawkins and other prominent miuisters will be present, and an interesting session is expected. All are cordially invited to attend. Those- of our subscribers who nnr neenamil to Call Otl 11 S (luring court week and leave substantial reminders of their visit will please consider tho editor's "Mackinaw" doffed. Ml The Dcmoerntic primaries wni take place in this county next Satur day afternoon. It is amusing to note what efforts some of the candidates are putting forth to get the nomination. --Jimmy Canfield was thrown from one of Mr. Jackson's ponies one day last week, and picked up in an insen sible condition. With the exception of some biuises about the face, he esc&pea injury. One week from to-day and then the Presidential agony will be over, and we will know who is to occupy tho chair for the next four years. The Republican convention mtcU in Chicago on that day. Prof F. Billig writes to tell ns that Ik abandoned the idea of teaching a 3elcct school this summer in Tionesta, as heretofore announced. Those who had contemplated sending their children will make a note of this. "The Family Medical Abstract for April," Dr. A. F. McKay, Editor, Tidioute, is out, and contains its usual amount of good, common sense reading matter. The Abstract costs but $l.o0 n year, and should be in every family. Mr. C. B. Evans, Supt. Wilson's con fidential clerk, of Oil City, spent yesterday in town. He and Dr. Blaine "tried Tubbs' Run for trout, but Erood dav for 'em, conse quently their load was easily carried. The forest fires destroyed a great deal of the fence around widow Dean's 'far.n on Whig Hill lately, and 'twas only by hard work tht other property was saved. The good old lady is thankful that the fires are all out now and that her loss wa9 no greater. Decoration day comes next Sat urday, but it seems there will be no observance of the day in this place. It would certainly be as little as the citizens could do to at least gather at the cemetery and strew a few flowers over the graves of the dead heroes, and not allow this beautiful rite to die oui entirely iu our place. -iTho rains of last week nave brightened up nil nature in this sec tion, and crops are beginning to look well. The "round had become so dry that grass and all other crops were looking sad and wilted, but the rain gave all a new start, and there is now good promise of more than an average harvest of grain and fruits. Mr. Robinson has done the square thing by himself and the public in building a solid new oak 6'idewalk in front of his residence. He also added much to the convenience of tjamsters and customers by putting up the boss hitching -apparatus in frout of the store. His example in this last par- 1 1 -n1 ii r V.aa been emulated by George Bovard. Attention is called to the card of Dr. E. L. He carries good recommen dations from some of the best dentist in the State of N. Y., and will doubt les9 receive the patronage of all out citizens. Hauling is brisk here at present and from thirty io forty teams may be seen on our street almost every day loaded with pipe and staves. Tl Railroad company is also doing a good business, the freight receipts at this station amounting to several thousand dollars a week, to say nothing of the large amount of stave3 which are daily exported from here. We are sorry to learn that our old friend and patron, Mr. Solomon Byers, who lived in the Mealy Settle- meit, has left the county ana rnoveu to Stoneham, Warren Co. Mr. Byers is an excellent citizen, and will be quite a loss to our county in general, an the Republican party in particular. We wish him prosperity in his uew home. Morris Einstein left for Nw York last Friday where, after attend ing to some business, he will take pass age across the pond to see his old home and friends. Now, we won t swear that this is the case, because Morris has fooled us so often that we hardly know whether to believe him now or not. We wish him a pleasant and safe voyage if he does, but if he don't go we don't care whether he gets drowned or nut. The Hanlan-Courtney boat race at Washington, D. C, on Wednesdiy last was nnolher grand fizzle, so to speak. Both oarsmen started, but Courtney weakened on the first quar tergot sick as he claims and gave up the race. Ilanlan rowed leisurly over the course and took the prize. This winds up Courtney's rowing career effectually. The census enumerators for this tenth district have all been appointed. The appointments for Forest couuly are as follows: Tionesta twp. and boro, D. W. Clark; Hickory and Harmony, J. B. Siggins ; Howe and Kingsley, Byron D. McClure ; Greene and Jenks, .las. K. Clark ; Barnctt, S. W. Calvin. Hie work must be completed during the month of June. Edenburg, Clarion Co.. was cre mated for the fourth time on Saturday nicht last. The fire was the work q nn inrondinrv as usual. The entire business portion of the town was 'de stroyed, entailing a loss of nearly ninety thousand dollars. Very few dwellings were burned, consequently the distress among the inhabitants has not been so great as at previous fires. It is not l'kely the place will be built up again. Verily Edeuburg has passed through many trials and tribu lations. Mr. Hamilton Stow, of Cincin nati, accompanied by his daughter, Mrs. Ida Garlick, and two children, arrived in town on Friday last, and are the cucsts of Mr. May's family. Mr. Stow was among the early citizens of Tionesta, and a great deal of the prospeiity and growth of the place, both in morals and otherwise, was due to his energy. He is now seventy-four years old, and although quite feeble, bids fair to live several years yet which his many old friends in this community will be glad to learn. As will be seen by the double column advertisement in- this issue, Dr. Jas. L. Thayer's Gieat Show will exhibit in Tiocesta, June 1st, 1880. The mere mention of Dr. Thayer's name in connection with a circus is sufficient to draw n crowd among the older inhabitants, he having been con nected mauy years with Thayer & Noyesreat circus. -:This show em braces many new features never before exhibited in this community, notable the Wonderful Electric Light, which is worth going miles to see. Its per formers are among the Desi on me continent, and altogether it is aid to )e one of the best shows extant. I he outfit of this grand show is entirely new, this being the first seasou it has ever heen in use. Those who waut to witness a truly great show should lay aside their work and make a general isliday of it, and give their families i 1 , - , .. . ! a C 4 Vi n anil ciiuureii a irem. v " principal features of the show will be the feat of walking from the ground on the outside of the Pavillions to the top of tho Centre Pole by a. daring young lady. This part ot the exuiui- tion will be free to all, and will doubt less draw a large crowd. By all iaeau8 come and witness tho circus. One thing we wish to warn people against, and that is tho pickpockets which usually follow circuses around. Thty are iu no way connected with the show, but are always around ready to entrap tho unwary games cf chance of every device, your money and go to the show. Additional Court Minute. C. J. The heavy storm on Thbrsday last was not without its fatal results in this section. John Mealy, son of Henry Mealy, who lives in Farmington town ship, Clarion county, was coming to fown with a load of staves-and stopped at Mr. Wentworth'p, about two miles from this place, to feed and take din ner. He had just got his team hitched ud after dinner and was standing on his load ready to start wiien me lightning struck him and he fell back dnn.l Jas. Black and Geo.
