Free Methodist preaching in tho Universalist Church next Sunday evening. M. E. Sunday School at 10 o'clock a. m., and Presbyterian Sunday School at 2 o'clock p. m. How'a thii for winter? A foot of snow this morning. Hoopla ! Now's your time, girls; good sleighing. Needn't loofc before you leap. ' Genial Stevo Vanderlin dropped in on us a few minutes yesterday, on his way homo from Bradford. Mr. 15. E. Jnmes, one of Tid ioutc's uiont prominent and highly re spected citizens died on Monday eve r.ing, Jan. 2G. Owing to the illness of Mrs. Cobb her school was closed for a few days last wiek. Sha resumed teaching yes terday morning. As yet uo candidates for office at the ppring elections have shown their nibs, but they'll probable be plenty enough wbou the time comes. We heard fifteen fellows say yes terJa) morning, "Oh I told you so? I knew w'd have lots of snow yet, and here it is." Good prophets, these. -We sincerely hope none of our hunters will meet with serious injuries by being run over with deer while out hunting foxes on this beautiful snow. The ground-hog camo out on Monday according to programme, and after taking a good look at his shadow, crawled hack into his winter quarters ; hence this foot of beautiful snow. The jury sustained tho original will in th"e Hunter will case at Erio on Tuesday of last week, but knocked the supplement, or codicil, into Bmith erecus. , A new trial was asked for immediately. Mrs. S. J. Wolcott will please Accept the thanks of the Republican office for a choice lot of the Silver Wedding cake. It was a very delicious article, and was put away with neatness and dispatch. A couple of small rafts pulled ut of the mouth of the creek on Friday houud for tho lower market. The first two days were fair, hut we fear the storm king has overtaken them ere this. If so they'll fare badly. The well .on the Hill farm will be kunk to tho next cand, or about 400 feet deeper. Mr. Kepler, tho Super intendent, has given the contract for drilling it to Mr. S. J. Wolcott, and the work will be rapidly pushed for ward. Our renders will pleaso boar with us this week and in fact uutil after, court week, lor the lack of reading matter that may bo noticable. After that we expect to unload considerable legal advertising, and will try and fill up with more interesting matter. St. Valeatjne day will soon be around, whea all who have little grudges to satisfy will have au oppor tunity to do 60 in the usual way, and the soft young lady with a sweetheart this being leap year can portray her feelings w'th one of tho sentimen tal kind. Attention is directed to. the card of D. W. Ckrk, Jr., Iasurance Agent, Tidioute, Pa., at tho head of this column. As will bo seen Mr. Clark has nothing but first class companies on his list, and thoso who insure with him cab rest assured that their busi ness will bo promptly and faithfully attended to What a vast difference a littlo tkip of sleighing makes in the appear ance of men and business. If it con tinues a few weeks it will help our citizens out wonderfully, and teams will be demerit! ; boll and fctave haul ing will be resumed, uud our mills, which have been idle for lo, those many weeks, will again start up and give employment to numberless idle mn. Ltt us pray lor a cooiiuuancc. Jefferson county lumbermen who got square timber to the Pittsburg market, on the late freshet, received 15 cents per foot for the same. If our lumbermen succeed in (retting their lumber to tho creek this winter, busy times may be looked for in the spring. The revivals at the M. E. and F. M. churches are still iu progress, and show no abatement in interest and attendance. Both societies express themselves determined to keep nu as long as sinners show a desire to flee from the wrath to como. Jlobinson Howe, who was tried in Franklin last week for the murder bf his father near Pioneer in June last, was found "not guilty" by the jury. This verdict is in accordance with what nine out of ten thought it would be. Now the question is, who did kill tho old man ? E. L. Davis Esq., as Senatorial Delegate, and Peter Berry of Fagun das, as Representative Delegate, took their departure for Harrisburg on Monday morning last, where the State Convention meets to-day. Mr. L. Agnew and lady left on the same train, expecting to visit Hon. J. B. Agnew's family for a few days. Tho Free Methodist society of this place have decided on buildiug a church here during the coming season. A lot has been purchased of Mr. S. II. Haslet, just below the store, and work will begin as soon as practicable. A paper is being circulated to aid the cause, and it is meeting with a hearty response by all our citizens. Saturday last II. D. Patch, of Hickory, found a refined oil spring near the mouth of Tubbs Run. He had a carboy of refined oil in his wagon which busted, and the oil all went to waste. Don't think it will effect the market any, but then the Derrick might make a note of if, for the benefit of the producers. The Teachers' monthly institute which was held here last Saturday was quite well attended. We were not furnished with a report of the pro ceedings, and are unable to givo any account of the affair, but understand all the teachers were well pleased, and expressed a willingness to be on hand at the next meeting. Geo. Hood was taken with cramps on Wednesday night last, and for several days his condition was- con sidered very critical. The trouble was caused by receiving a severe strain while loading logs on a wagon. ; He was so bad that eight men were scarcely able to hold him. He is better now, and considered to be out of danger, unless he teceives a backset. The Auditors' Report is pub lished this week, and shows up well for our county. The liabilities of the county are $15,000, while the assets show op $22,353.93. Before another year is passed there is no reason why our outstanding bonds should not be all paid off and money left in the Treasury, thus materially lessening the taxation iu tho future. On the whole the Report shows a judicious management of the county affairs, at which our citizens may feel justly gratified. The enlarged Sunday Derrick made its appearance on Sunday last, 'filled crammed, running tiver with news." It is now an eight-page 48-col-umn paper, with but three or tour col umns of advertising the other columns being filled with fresh and spicy local and general news. A weekly review of the oil market ; a complete summary of the week's doings in general and all the latest telegraphic sparks; besides a variety of other matter cal culated to suit all tastes, and dished up in a lively and entertaining man ner will make the Sunday Derrick take at first sight. Success. Burglars entered the. store of Mr. David Bowman of Tylersburg, on the 19th, ult., and carried ofT goods and small change to the amount of about a hundred dollars. The thieves proved to be two brothers named Bush, who were arrested aud taken to Clarion, where they now languish in thecouuty bastile, awaiting trial. Shortly after the robbery these parties commenced making purchases at Green's store aud other places, and paying therefor in small change, such as pennies, nickels, Ac, by which they were detected. Senrch being instituted a great many uf the missing articls were found. The parties are said to be hard cass, baring been compelled to leave Indi ana count? some tino ago on account of their "crookedness." Last Saturday afternoon, in com pany with the staff of tho National, wo totk a trip to West Hickory, where, according lo previous arrangements, we had a friendly glass ball shoot with Dr. Shamburg. Getting off the train about a mile below the station, we were met at the gate and maoe wel come by the pleasant and hospitable Doctor, who lend the party into his elegantly furnished appai tmenls where everything was as cheerful as a refined and cultured taste could make it. After a few moments of pleasant con versation the Doctor took out his guns three elegant ones, by-the-way and other shooting paraphernalia, and all repaired to the field aud enjoyed a couple of hours iu real solid plencure, after which the party again sought the house, and in a short time were seated at the table partaking of a most boun tiful and delicious supper. The crisp air had sharpened up the appitites of all and the victuals disappeared very rapidly. Tea over it was about train time, and the Dr., not yet through ex tending his hospitalities, had his ponies hitched up, and after bidding all "good evening," with a cordial invita tion to "come again," we were soon land ed at the depot, Master Harry Sham burg handling the ribbons. To say that we had a good time is drawing it very mild we were never treated better, and never were a set of mortals made more welcome and at home. The Doctor is pleasantly situated at the month of West Hickory creek, where he has every convenience one could wish. His wells, of which a large number are pumping, are situated ou the Fogle and Manross farms a few miles up the creek from his residence. He will soon have arrangements completed whereby he will have direct telephone communication with Titusville and Tidioute, which will be another great addition to his conveniences. We didn't have an opportunity tocdnvcree much in regard to his operations but hope soon to be able to give cur readers an idea of what he is doing for the wel fare of our county. We hope Dr. Sham burg will accept our thanks for the hospitable aud cordial manner in which we were treated on Saturday, and wo also tiope to be able to recip rocate his kindness at no distant day. Mr. Jas. Huddleson died on Friday evening, Jan. 30, 1880, at his residence on Hunter's Rut), aud was buried by the side of his father, in the cemetery of Mt. Zion Church, in Tio nesta Twp., ou Sunday last. Although the news of his death was almost daily expected for some lime, it was re ceived with sorrow by ua many friends throughout this neighborhood. His disease is supposed to have been a sort ef blood cancer, and for about three months he has been a great sufferer. Mr. Huddleson always bore the re spect of his neighbors aud acquaint ances, being au honest and upright man. He served his time in the late war and was a brave soldier, having received a wound while in the service. Having become truly converted before bis death he bore his sufferings with christian fortitude, being resigned to the will of his God ; he expressed him self ready to go whenever bis Master called. He leaves a wife and four small children to mourn his demise, and these, with the rest of his relatives and friends, have the sympathy of all our people iu their sor afiliction. Mr. Huddlesou's age was 41 years, 4 months and 5 days. The neat new M. E. Church at Whig Hill will be dedicated on the 19 th, inst., according to notice eke where published in this issue. A cordial invitation is extended to all to be present on the occasion. People, as a general thing, expect to be bored a good deal for money at a church dedication, but such will not be the case in this instance, as the pastor an nounces that no collection will be taken up, which tact alone will uo doubt draw a crowd. Our Whig Hill frieuds are to be congratulated upou their efforts. Mr. A.. W. Smiley during the past week 1ms been pilotiuga company of prominent railroad men from the east, over the proposed extension of the F. St., P. A C. li. R., from'Shiopen ville to Kane. This route was sur veyed last summer by tho way of Fry burg, Tylersburg aud Marienville, and the road will probably be built this yeur. As it is but sixty miles across to Kane, a route to tba McKe au Co., oil fields, and would probably be a profit able investment for tho stockholders. I'drolia, Cor, l'Uttburgh Lender, A mm named Jnfm L. Shaw got off the 2: 46 train up yesterday after noon, and while crossing tho bridge slipped and fell in such a manner a to break his right arm midway be tween tho shoulder and elbow, lie was taken to the Central House, and Dr. BUine called, who reduced the fracture and says tho patient will get along all light. We did not learn where he was from nor what his busi ness is. Werfi he a lawyer aud should die from the effects of the wound, the following epitaf h might be appropria ted: Hero lies John Shaw, Attorney-at-Iaw ; When ho died The devil cried "Givo us your puw, John Shaw Attovney-at-law." The efforts of the church have not been as successful as might be wishod. Mr. F. Lomire has closed the lane leading from the road to his house. His neighbors are puzzled to know the cause of this rash act. John Wilber aud G. W. Burhen are at present cutting bolts for the Ross Run stave mill. Several copies of some g. b. paper arp sent to this office, but the senders would do better to save their money for next fall's campaign, as the voters haven't got so "green" as to be taken in by such two ceut campaign bladder dash papers.
