The Republicans of Pennsylvania nrc requested to sent! delegates, ap pointed according to their representa tion iu the Legislature.to a Convention, to meet at IlarrisburgAat 12 ra., on tho 4th day ot February next, to elect delegates to the Republican National Convention, to nominate Presidential Electors, to nominate a candidato for Judge of the Supremo Court, and a candidate for Auditor General, and to transact such other business as may be brougbt'before them. By order of F. C. Hootox, Chairman State Committee. Samuel F. RaruJ ) c , . C. Jj. Mao em, Secretar.es. Letter from Kansas. Atchison, Kan., Jan. 18, 1880. Atchison is situated on tht Missouri River, C30 miles wet of St. Louis. It is a town about twice the size of Oil City, and they claim a population of between 18 and 20 thousand. The country around here is rough and billy, and iu some respects resembles Pennsylvania ; but take it back from 15 to 20 miles and it is just the nicest rolling prairie that it has ever been our good fortune to gaze upon. The soil is fertile and yields enormous crops of corn and wheat; also sorgum cane. It is really surprising to a man from tho east to come to our little town ; there is more business done here in one week lhau we have seen in old Penn'a in a year. From morning until night there is a steady stream of teams, aad it is impossible at times to cross the streets ; they are principally country wagons loaded with grain and uthcr country produce; we would venture to say wo have seen 500 different teams in one day, and it seems as if they would never get done hauling in grain. There are hundreds and hundreds of car loads of grain shipped through here every week and yet the R. R. companies can not supply the demand for cars. The next great est trade carried u here is tno pork business. Thousands of hogs pass over the different railroads for Chicago, St. Louis, Kansas City, and Atchison. Wc have a packing house iu our city that consumes three thousand hogs every ten hours when they are running lull time. Well, it reminds ouu of the oil excitement in 'Gl and '05, only they dou't pay as big wages for work. Lnst year there were 1,000 buildings put up in Atchison, aud lliey claim there will be 2,000 more this year. Oh, she ii growing like a Kansas nigger on torn dodgers. We also have three faro banks, oue keuo room and four hazzard tables; 6o you see we are well lixed for gambling saloons. We have pawn shops and everything that goes to make a town lively. We have a case of murder every week besides lots of cutting scrapes. Well, we like it here real well, and expect to live hero for some' time. There are ouly eight railroads coming in here, and another on the way. These roads are principally Gould roads. There are three large elevators, oa factories, oil manufactures of different kinds, spice mills, four largo grist mills, ami other manufacturing establishments. There is in process of erection a union depot which, when liuUhed, will cost 220,000. It will be a splendid building. There are lots of negroes here, about mjc-ttiird of the population beiog colored people. J. II. Hluxus, H. II. fe.IIOKMAK.LK. The above communication being a little too lengthy Jbr tho present crowded state of our columns, we con cluded todiviJeit, and the balance will appear iu our next. Ed. Communicated, I notice, Mr. Editor, that a series of articles of great merit, us well a. of great local interest, have been puolibh ?, in the J i-wciy) Spectator of late. They arc entitled "Recollections of i'ifty years," and arc signed "D. H." They arc written in the st Iu of Annals, aud present a picture of the past in an julmirable manner, evincing au obser vant thinker, who. a good memory, us well nsati acute perceptiou of human nature. Plain detail are worked up mo that they cannot fail to intcn.it, while old taws "are sandwiched in" to mmhui tiich ae "a bird in the hand i.s worth two in the bush;" ngiin, "never count your chickens until thoy are batched," or controverting tho old theory, "thai a tailor is only the ninth part of a man," Ac, &c. Then again, some of these incidents as narrated are as remarkable as true; in other Words, "Truth is stranger than fiction." For instance, the story of the woman, Ap pleton, who, in 1830, started from her home in what is now known as the Oldlown flats, about two miles up Ti- onesla Creek, to visit some friends in Washington Tp., Clariou Co., and to save travel, crossed tins creec i h,k; -.1.1. i .v ... ,6 vwvjj, aim oiaucu overpx). j fsomii J lord rstroet, In tlio citv of the hills, through the woods, and was never heard of more, though sought for diligently and with tears, is one of the most mournful and mysterious tales that could bo imagined, and well may the writer eay "did ravenous wolves or other wild animals devour her, or did she perchance creep into some crevice in the rocks or into some hollow log, and dio of starvation or cold? How she died is a mystery to this day. Then the writer aptly adds, "this is a case in which it is not necessary to draw on the imagination t make the reality more horrible. None but the All-Beeir.g eye can explain this poor woman s disappearance a disappear ance so complete that not a veslage of her remains or clothing has ever been found." As the incident is so well drawn I have taken the liberty to quote the language of the writer for it can- not be improved. Then again, about 40 vears ago an other tragedy h recorded of a stranger who, on Iiouesta Creek, was knocked overboard from a raft by an oar stem, and be was lost iu the waters. An islaud in Tioucsta Creek, where the body was found is called to this day "Dead Man's Island." These are some of the items of interest onlj some. What is the use of reading fictitious so- called "Diaries of A Detective," or of a Physician, as tho case may be, for amusement; or "Mysteries of Paris," or some place else, when such annals as these furnish us with facts that are not cooked up in the brain of some novel writer, but contain the truth feelingly and correctly stated. Who ever, Mr. Editor, this "D. II." ia, I know be writes interesting articles. X. , PROCLAMATION. "Whkrkas. The Ifon. L,. T). Wet more.
