My departed'for Lou irville, l?t week, where ho proposes to tembark in business of some kind. IIo has our best wishes for success. The Clarion Republican is author ity for the statement that there were fourteen births in that town on the 13th inst. A dance was gotten up at Bovard's hall last night, but as none of the boys have happened around this morning we cannot report as to how it- went off. G. W. Robinson made a visit to Reynold? ville last week, returning on Monday, making tho entire distance, fifty miles, in ono day, with that fat little home of Lis. St. Valentine's Day occurs on the 14th of next month ; and don't forget it. Wo anticipate that several "com ic" valentines wiil be sent and received in Tionesta on that day. Wo acknowledge the receipt of an invitation to attend a masquerade at tho Tidioute skating rink, on Fri day ..evening last. The proprietors, Meeers. Goodrich & Co., know exactly how to condu.ct a rink. During tho latter part of last wee!i wo observed some parties skating on the ice at the other side of the river, and from the easy manner in which they glided along, we suppose there must liavo beeo good skating there at that time. In tho Democratic Caucus for U. S. Senator, recently, lion. George A. Jcfcks was quite warmly supported, having received 18 votes. He should have iceuivod tho compliment of a nomination. Harlem Adams was in town over Sunday, on a visit to his parents. He is keeping books for a large firm in Bradford, whither he departed on Monday, lie is much pleased with Bradford, and predicts a busy time in that eeclioti as soon as spring opens. We heai that the well of Messrs. Dale & Janiieson, near Bradford, which we noticed last week, is pump ing steadily 42 barrels, and will prob ably settle down to a SO-barrcler, and keep up to that figure as long as the territory lasts. Hon. R. J. Nicholson, of Jefferson county has presented a bill to reduce the number of representatives hack to the old standard of thirty-three. Sena tors and one hundred members, pro posing amendments to the constitution iu that particular. So says the Brook s' ille Graphic. The notices for the spring elec tions are posted up. aud already we hear of Some parties who will try their luck at getting officea whose compen sation consists in an uulimited amount of curses and fault-findings from those who could not do one-half as well iu their places. In the list of jurors drawn for Jef ferson county court, we notice the name of V. R. Coon, of Baruett. Is there a a man of that uame living in Baruett township, Jefferson county, or are the Jury Commissioners of that county obliged to draw on Forest to get to gether au honest jury ? At svx o'clock on Monday mor ning last, a fire broke out in Turkey City, burning twenty-five buildings before it was brought under control. The total loss is estimated at $33,000, partly insured. It is supposed that the fire originated from a defective flue. ' The youugest child of Mr. Thos. Snodgrass, of President, died on Fri day last. The funeral, which occurred on Sunday, was largely attended, sev cril parties from Tionesta being pres ent. The afilicted- paronts have the sympathy of a large circle of friends. FIRE I Derickson & Co.'s stavo mill went up in smoke on Thursday morning last, destroying the machinery and burning quite a number of staves and several cords of bolts. The fire was observed by Mr. Adams about 1 o'clock A. M., and when discovered the whole mill waa ablaze, so that it was impossible to get anything out of it. The bell at tho Lawrence House was rung, and quite a number of our citi zens gathered and assisted in removing staves, holts, &c. out of the way of the fire. But little could be accomplished however, arid no attempt was made to put the fire out. Popular opinion leans toward the belief that the fire wa3 the work of an inceudiary, but we arc loth to believe that we have any body in our place who is degraded enough to do such a deed, the effect of which is to stop, for some time, at least, almost the only industry among us which was giving work and wages to quite a number of men. some of whom were depending solely on what they earned there to procure bread for their fiDiilif-s. If t here is such a per son adii.n;; u.-, U i- !o he hoped thuthe will feel ii i.i.-j nvwi j uii jri as much distress as he has caused. The amount, of the loss we havo not heard. The mill was partially insured. The buil ding belonged to Wm. Lawrence, and was valued at .$300, uninsured. We believe Messrs. D. & Co. intend to re build shortly. Two bills have been ofTered in the Legislature, proposing a tax on oil, aud as a comparatively small delega tion from the oil region is there, the matter has create ! no small amount of consternation among the oil meu. The Derrick of Monday, however, quotes a section from the Constitution of the U. S., which forbids the taxing of exports and imports for State pur poses without the von'seut of Congress. It is to be hoped that the provision quoted will suffice to kill the proposed tax. The oil interests have never been treated fairly by our State Legislaturo, but the proposed tax would be adding outrage to neglect. Certainly tjie Oil Regions hud promises enough from the leaders of all parties last fall to see that they are not impoverished for the purpose of paying the debts of Alle gheny county. i.ue boiler or a locomotive on its trial trip on the one-legged railroad, at Bradford, exploded about 5 o'clock on Monday afternoon, killing John Ad dis, brakeman ; John Vaughn, engin eer; Geo. Gordon, conductor, and Michael Hollern. Charles Shepherd, ticket agent, Thomas Luby and Chas. ljogau win prooaoiy die ot injuries received. M. N. Allen, R. H. Ster rett and Oscar' Shutt were injured slightly. Ihe accident is attributed to low water in the boilers. The boil ers were old ones put into a locomo tive built for the road by Gibhs & Storrett. Mr. Criswell, who for a year or two past has made the columns of the Derrick blossom as the red, red rose, with humorous paragraphs, and whose productions were quoted throughout the Union, has resigned his position on that paper, to accept a similar one on the Cincinnati Enquirer. His place is supplied by Mr. Taylor, late of the Call, who is an experienced aud able manipulator of the pencil. The Der rick still continues to be the Organ of Oil, and is as readable, as newsy, and as reliable as ever. Jim. Wil vhs hauling tics on the icv tho l'.iot or L.tin Island to the d-pf.t, !':: U..-0. Morgan, on Mon day lust, aud while coming up with a load, the horses and sled broke through the ice iu the back channel, abreast the middle of tho island. Oue horse was pulled out without much trouble, but the other was in the water about an hour, and was badly chilled, be tide having some skin knocked off its legs. The sled sunk in about eight feet of water, but was got out all right. We believe the horses are not seriously injured. The party at Tylersbtirg on Thurs day evening last is said to have been a grand success. t An upset or two oc curred, at usual, but nobody was hurt. Everybody who attended speaks iu glowing terms of their treatment and the enjoyableuess of tho whole affair. As we promised last week, we are now able to state positively that Gor. Iloyt was safely inaugurated a week a week ago yesterday, aud Don Cam eron was duly elected U. S. Senator, with only a few votes cast against him in tlio Republican ranks. Whig Hill Letter. Whig Hill, Jan. 24, 1879. Our Hill is still prospering and peo ple are all well. Mr. Frank Gillespie is putting logs in at Newtown on this good snow, and we hear the jingle of the sleigh-bells occasionally, which makes us want to take a fleigh-rido ourselves. Our young folks attended a spelling match at the German Hill school, on tho 17th, which they pronounced a success, owing to the good management of R. Z. Gillespie and some of his pu pils. They were well entertained. We read iu your paper that an ef fort is to be made to secure legislation to protect our wild game from utter destruction. If a petition to thateffect is presented for signatures wo will put our names down willingly. Rev. Stone will preach in the school house to-morrow at 11 A. M. Quar terly meeting will commence on Sat urday, February 8th, lasting over Sunday and a goo J meeting is antici pated. George- Klinstiver has given up blacksmithiug and has gone to cutting logs ; he says he will accumulate a for tuue if he has to obtain it by pulling the saw-handle. So much for pluck. "Wheru there's a will there's a way." Faithfully, Dick. Thanks. To those who assisted us in our property at the fire of Thursday morning last we' extend our sincere lhanks. J. H. Derickson & Co. H. W armful of . Roberts, while carrying an wood up his icy outside stairs, a few days ago, slipped, diopped his wood, and fell to the bottom, one of his ribsxinuiing iu contact with each particular step until he reached the bottom. He was paiufully ' but not seriously injured. The wonder is thit the rib which took all the bumps was not broken. He is up and around at present, but is feeling as if he had been having a wrestle with a threshiug-ma chine. Mr. Wheeler voted for Don Cam eron lor U. to. be n a tor, and so lar as we have been able to ascerta in none of his Republican constituents are dis posed to fin'd any fault with his action. We notice with pleasure that he has been appointed on the Committee on Corporations, one of the most itnpor tant and responsible committees iu the House. .The Court Proclamation, Tria List, Application for License and Notice to Graud Jurors, relieving them from attendance at Court, are published this week. Up to tho pres ent time no business requiring the ac tion of a grand jury has been brought to the notice of the cogrt, and hence the notice referred to. The ice in the liver broke up last night, but gorged in the islands below and stopped. This muming, about 8 o'clock, the mass commenced moving again, and as we write the river is full of floating ice. The ice-breakers on the bridge piers stood the racket in fine shape, although some of the ice was about twenty inches thick. The news came to town yesterday that Mr. Wm. Hunter, oue of the old pioneers of this place, had died at his residence in Waterford a few days sitce. We are without particulars, but will endeavor to get some facts of his history for our next issuo. Senator John G. Hall of this dis trict has our thauks for public docu ments. Wo had the good fortune to meet him reeently, and find him a very pleasant and accomplished geutleman, aud one who bids fair to make a good representative in the Senate. Maj. McLaughlin, tho wrestler, had another bout with a fresh victim, iu Chicago, a few days ago, and broke his antagonist's collar bona at the first full. It is delightful sport, if it hap pens to be the other fellaw who gets hurt. Oil is down below a dollar now. And the way some of our legislators propose to bring it up to a living pru e is to tax: it 25 cts. per barrel above the selling price, and take a mortgi.c j the real estate iu the Oil Region i,. r the balance. Mr. C. A. Derickson, President of the First National Bank of Meadville, and father of J. II. Derickson, of this place, made us a call ou Friday last.
