Attention is called to the new ad vertisement of Ludwig Mayer, whole sale and retail dealer in tobaccos, liquors, etc., etc. He carries a large stock and sells at low figures. The present damp weather is pe culiarly favorable for the contracting of colds, which bring with them a mul titude of attendant disorders. A little attention to the laws of health just now will save a good deal of trouble in the future. Messrs. May & Kelly have deliv ered a large bill of lumber and timber to Mr. E. E. Clapp, at President, for the erection of a Urge grist mill at that place. The mill is to be located about one-fourth mile up Hemlock creek. The new well on the Hill farm is down, and is pumping a little jnore than three barrels of heavy oil per day. Three barrels of this oil brings as much as sixteen barrels of light oil. The Hill farm is threfore good terri tory. The oil was struck at about 200 feet. SherilTShawkey, who has just re turned from Fox's old Mills, says the old oil well which is near there, flows a stream of oil about the sizo of a rye straw, and that the oil colors the creek about half way across. This looks fa vorable for tho future of Forest as oil territory. The Nursery for December is to hand, and nobly sustains its reputa tion as the very best periodical pub lished for the youngest class of read ers. The subscription price is $1.50 a year, postpaid, with great reduction to clubs. Address John L. Shorey, 26 Bromficld Street, Boston, Mass. Those of our habitual hunters who have been out in the old part of the county, tell us that the squirrels are very numerous in the beech woods, but are not molested much on account of the fear of driving away the deer. One hunter sliot half a dozen squirrels in an hour, one day last week. From what we can lenrn, we believe there are more hunters in the woods this fall thau ever before iu one sea son. If each man gets a deer we are afraid some will have to be driven in from adjoining counties. It is to be hoped that there w;,M be no accidents, of which there i aisnys great danger when the woods are so full of hunters. Our tax-gatherers are around sug gesting payment to citizens of the bor ough, and they will probably earn their commissions by the time their doplicates are satisfied. P. M. Clark has the extra borough duplicate, and also that of the county and bond tax. Fred Kopoian hus the school dupli cate. We nru requested to state that there will be a grand shooting match in town on Saturday next, at which all rifle ehootists can have an opportunity to secure a turkey for Thanksgiving. The shoot will probably take place on Hunter's Island. The arrangements will be made at tho Lawrence House on the' morning of the match. Dis tances, etc., to suit the marksmen. All are invited to attend. Several car loads of hard coal have been delivered here within a few days, and Mr. Brennan, who orders for Tioncsta, will have .a few tons mors than he has orders for. Any one wish ing a few loads can be accommodated by applying to him. For a couple of months past it has beea almost impos sible to get hard coal shipped here, on account of the mines supplying the eastern market. A new time table went into efTect on this road on Monday last, but up to the pScsent timo we have not re ceived an official copy of it. Mr. Craig, station agent, kindly furnishes us with the time of trains at this sta tion, as follows : South, 2d class, 9:56 a. ru. 1st ' 1:53 p.m. " " " 9:23 p.m. Jforth, 1st class, 2:54 a. m., Flag. 3:19 p. m. By this arraugement parties from town can go to Oil City on the 9:56 a. m. train, returning at 3:19 p. m., thus giving them two to three. hours in. Oil City. The mails are carried on the 3:19 train north, und the 9:23 train south. Mr. W. S. Baldwin, late publish cr of the "Guide of the Oil Regions," has made a new departure in his pub lication, which comes to us from Buf falo, as "Bah" Vs Railway and Hotel Guide, aud L o Business Index." It has in no mucr abandoned its old field, but simply extended it. Its oil region guide, statistics, etc., areas full as ever, and it is as much a necessity to oil men and those desiring to (ravel in the oi! regions as ever. Subscrip tion price $1.00 per annum, or 10 cts. a single number. Address W. S. Baldwin, Buffalo, N. Y. H. A. Adam?, of this place, pack ed his tools on Monday of last week, and departed for Bradford, where him self and a brother-in-law had made ar rangements to purchase a wheel and tank factory. We understand that the purchase was made, and the new owners entered into possession. On Thursday night a big fire occurred there, and among the property "burned was this factory. We have been un able, up to the present time to learn the extent. of Mr. Adams' loss, but it must have been a considerable amount. We are truly sorry to hear of his mis fortune. Rev. Elliot authorizes us to an nounce that the Rev. Dr. Carnachan, of Meadville, will deliver a lecture on the subject of Temperance, in the Pres byterian church, on Monday evening, Dec. 2d. The lecture will be free, and it is hoped the houso will be filled. Dr. Carnachan is one of the most gift ed ministers in the State, and treats this subject in an entirely different vay from the old stereotyped meth od. No one need be afraid of hearing a dull lecture ; the Dr. is not tho man to bore an audience. Tho Forest National is cvideutly agitated. Iu last week's issue it des ignates this paper as "a milk and water sheet," and advises us to start a gram mar school. Wo have other and nobler views : we intend to embark in the medical profession, choosing the hydro-lacteal school of medicine. There is only one obstacle in our way now, and that is, since the charter of the Payne' Medical College was taken away by the Legislature -we don't know exactly where we could buy a diploma. - We noticed a very large Cotswold ram being hauled through town last week, and upon inquiry learned that it hai been brought on by Mr. Kelly, who is going into tho sheep business right. The sheep weighs 320 pounds, and is probably the best and largest sheep ever brought into the couuty. A good portion of our territory ivell adapted to sheep culture, and we rath er expect to see Beveral of our farmers go into the business in the course of a year or two. James Swailes and his son John were up at their shanty on Salmon last week, and each succeeded in kill ing a deer. This is the second deer John has slain this fall, and as this is his first season on the warpath he may do a good deal in the line before the season is over. In their bear traps, which they had set in the vicinity of the shanty, they found a wild cat and a 'coon, both of which were promptly skinned. . The December number of Jlallou'i Magazine is published ; am', in glanc ing over its one hundred pages, we could not help feeling that of its class there was nothing to compare with it for general interest and for light, pleas ant reading. It has such a variety such good stories, eloquent poetry, fine illustrations, and valuable r.ecipes and information. All of these things can be had for $1.50 a year, or fifteen cents a single copy, postage prepaid. Pub lished by Thomes. & Talbot, 23 Haw ley St., Boston, and for sale at all tlio periodical depots iu the country. Chas. Van Giesen, o,f President, bs been instrumental in causing the death of several deer since the season opened. He helped hang up two last Thursday. He uses a Spencer repeat ing rifle, and shoots to kill. A correspondent favors us with the folftwing items from Stewart's Run: What has become of all those genial Tionestians who were flying out around hero so lively this fall ? We miss them. Has tho election anythiug to do with it? The farmers (and we have no oth ers) are busy killing porkers, making sausage, telling stories, etc. Rev. Stone,Tiur new minister, seems to give general satisfaction, and has already gaiucd a largo place in the af fections of his people. Our winter term of school has com menced, Mr. Eaton Landers teaching. Are trying to get up a singing school. Lack seven of the requisite number to engage Mr. Griffin's services. Some one join. Mr. M.
