South Faguxdas, Forest Co., Pa., 1 Monday, May 27, 1878. j Editor Republican : I have been a reader of you paper for more than a year, nr.d as yet I have for tho first time to see a comment from our quiet littlo town. Allow me, therefore, to make a few remarks in your columns: Perhaps many readers of your pa per know this town better by the name Battle City, once a lively town, but now fast fading away. Many of our good citizona are going away to better fie!3s of pasture, although a few remain hap py and quite ambitious, willing to work and labor for more. Oil productions have come down to a very small thing. A few new wells have been drilled within tho last year, but with very little or no show. Mr. Wes. Beatty is goiug to drill an oil well 2,000 feet deep, to lest the fourth sand, unless oil is found in pay ing quantities at less depth. Wm. Toy has opened the Scott House, with license, and is well pre pared to enterlaiii guests and tho trav eling public. This spring the Amateur Rifle Club was organized here .with considerable spirit. The following officers' were elected : President, Wm. Penn Wagner. Vice Prest., Samuel Douglass. Sec'y and 'Treas., L. W. Hotchkiss. On Saturday last the boys received their new Creedmoor targets, and had a lively time on their score shoot. Enthusiastic applause from the spec tators present greeted the announce ment of every good shot. Mr. Wag ner, President of the ckibi on his last score, out of a possible 59 made 47, scoring 7 bull's eyes in ten shots, the best on their record. On Saturday, Juue 8th, the boys will meet again to shoot on their RiUa Range at Fagundas. A Good Fiuend. Ap ply to S. D. Irwin, Esq., Tionesta, Pa. Brookston Letter. Brookston, Pa., May 28, 1878. I'd. Republican :- Below I write you tho particulars of the death of Jos. B. Allen, better known as "Yankee" Allen, who died in Howe Township on tho 25th inst., aged about 66 years. Mr. A. had been confined to his room for about two weeks, and as there was no one present at the time of I113 death but his wife, some over suspicious person or persons circulated rumors to the effect that Mrs. A. had poisoned him. This rumor becoming common, the authorities thought best to investigate tho matter, and proceed ed to impanel a coroner's jury. The following is the finding of tho jury in the case : "We tho the undersigned, having been impaneled as a Coroner's Jury, to investigate the cause of the death of Jas. B. Allen, late of this Township, do render this, our unanimous verdict: That the deceased came to his death from a a'sease of the heart, so Eay we each and all of us. Given under our hands this 27th day of May, 1878, at Broolwton, For est Co., Pa. F. W. Brook?. Foreman; C. C. Smith, Wm. B. Hoyt, J. Ilimes, J. Cameron, W. A. Bulson, A. Deet, J. M. Gorton, W. II. Wostorn, J. B. White, A. Cameron, M. M. Seybolt. Dr. Badger, of Sheffield, made a posuortem examination, after which ho gave the following testimony : "There was a clot in the right side of tho heart, producing a stoppage of the proper circulation of the blood through the heart and lungs. I find the stom ach in a healthy condition. The clot is not formed of blood alone, but is partially made up of a substance which in time would have become quite hard." Truly Yours, B. D. McClure.
