The next legal holiday occurs on the 30th inst., Decoration Day. There has been no general observance of this day in Tionesta for about four years, tfnd we hear no stir about it now. Mr. O. Hancock, of Kittanning, one of the Commissioners of Arm strong County called on us on Satur day last. He had an eye on the Iress office, and may yet purchase tho paper. He is a very agreeable gentleman. We are in receipt of the "News Almanac" for the current jear, issued by Mr. White, of the Tidioute News. It is a nice piece of work, contains a goodly amount ot information, aud is a credit to the office and to the com piler. . Bruce, a little on of D. W; Clark's, aged something over two years, fell down tho cellar-way. in Mr. C.'s house, yesterday -afternoon, and was badly bruised. . No bones were broken, but it is yet feared that he is internal ly injured. r-A little boy. of Rinaldo Toby's at Bob's Creek, fell off the bridge at that place on Sunday last, lighting among some stones on the bank of the creek, and dislocated one of his elbows. Dr. Cobtun vas called, and the little fel low is getting along finely. Mr. E. M. Payne, of Waverly, N. Y., called upon us on Friday last, but we were unfortunately absent. He is an old subscriber of ours, owns land in this county, and is spoken of by those who have meet him, as an energetic and urbane gentlemaD. Mr. C. A. Hill informs u that gentleman named Courtney is about to pierce the bosom of mother earth, on his farm, in quet of oil. . The rig will be commenced this week. Charles is quite snnguiDe, and he may have a young Bradford up there for all. any body knows. M. W. Tate, Esq., returned homo from Clearfiold on Saturday, tie re ports that square timber over on the Susquehanna is in good demand, and selling at from 9 to 14 cents. Lumber and timber at Pittsburgh are doing nothing at present, and no sales are being made. We have heard of no of fers of over eight cents. Wo have received the prospectus of The Eye, a new paper which is to commence publication at Reynolds ville on the 15th inst., and to be con ducted by Messrs. Benscotter & Car tin. It is to be independent in politics, but neutral in nothing, a very diffi cult line to pursue. However, the now paper has our best wishes. Just after publishing the notice o the pigeon shoot in this place, which is to come off to-morrow and next day we received an invitation to attend u match of the same kind at Erje, which commences to-day and ends on Friday, Graham aud Derby are the committee, We are sorry the two matches take place at the same time, as we had de pended on seeing tho Erie oquad at the shoot down here. The exhibition given by Mr. J Q. Sweeny's school, at Clarington, oa the 19th ult., is said to have been a success in every particular. Fou hundred spectators were present. Each performer did well, and Prof. Cannon proved a very humorous piece of ar tillery, creating an explosion among the audience every tirao he shot off one of his jokes. Tho programtno was so long, however, that it was impossibl to get through with it all. School Directors' Convention. The Directors' Convention of Forest County met yesterday afternoon in tho Court House, in accordance with the call published, for the purpose of electing a County Superintendent of Schools, for the ensuing three years. The Convention was called to order by Supt. II. S. Brock way, who also stated the object of the Convention. On mo tion, A. B. Kelly, Esq. wos elected President of tho body, D. W. Clatk Secretary, and F. W. Brooks and W. i. Dunn Tellers. The President read instructions from the State Superintendent, and extracts from tho law recently passed, fixing the compensation of 'County Superin tendents, from which it appeared that the salary for this county would be $800 per annum. Nominations for Co. Superintendent icing declared in ordjr, Messrs. II. S rock way, B. D. McClure, S. F. Roh rcrandJuo. ballade were placed in nomination. The first ballot resulted as follows : Brockway 17, McClure 10, Rohrer 11, Sallade 2. Twelve ballots were taken viva voce, with not much change in results, un til the eleventh ballot, when Brock- way had 19, McClffre 18 and Rohrer 4, On tho twelfth and final ballot, Brockway had 22 and McClure 19 voles. The President declared II. S. Brockway duly elected Superintendent of Schools for Forest County for the next three years. Prof. Brockway returned thanks to the Convention in a few words, and on motion the Convention adjourned sine die. Ever since the serpent tempted Mother Eve, ia the Garden of Eden, all mankind has hated snakes. In this country the particular dread and aver sion of the people, is rattlesnakes, and in some locations, copperheads. But we have fresh and well-grounded cause of action against the water-snake, hith erto deemed a comparatively innocent reptile. The reason is this : On Fri day laot we were trouting in a small stream just south of Stewart's Run, and had thrown a six-inch trout out on the bank, but he wafted ns good bye with his tail, and disappeared iu hia native element. We fished a min ute or so iu the same pool, thinking perhaps he might take another bite, but not feeling a pull, and concluding the trout had been pricked, we started for the next pool below. There we saw a trout turning up its sides, and circling around as if it were srazy ; believing that it was tho trout we had thrown out a moment before, and that it was badly wounded, we laid down our rod, and went toward the water with the intention of landing the fish by hand. But what wao our surprise upon a close inspection, to find that the trout had been seized by a water- suake, which was swimming across the pool with the trout in its mouth, hav ing a hold about an inch from tho end of tbe trout's tail 1 ' The erratic move ments of the trout were caused by his frantic endeavors t escape. We wait ed until that snake had made a par tial landing, and then planted a big boot firmly on the back of his neck, when he opened his mouth, and the trout waved us a second adieu, and disappeared iu bis native element, The fact that these reptiles preyed on brook trout, or fish of any kind, was new to us, and we then and there reg istered a, vow that from henceforth we would destroy every water-snake that crossed our path, if it were a possible thing. PIGEON K1IOOT. Mr. L. Agnew desires us to inform the public that he will have a grand pigeon shoot in Tionesta, to-morrow and next day, May 9th and 10th. He has three thousand lively pigeocs on hands, and sportsmen pan be assured of haviDg all they want to shoot at. The shoot will be under the direction of some experienced person, and ev erything will be done according to the most approved rules. In the Press of last week, Mr. S II. Haslet is announced for Assembly ; Mr. D. W. Clark, for Frothonotary ; Mr. C. E. McCray, of Tionesta, and Mr. Fisk, of Fagundus for Sheriff ; and Messrs. Long and Berlin forCouu ty Commissioners. Well gentlomen, we will give you one Commissioner, one Auditor, one Jury Commissioner, and, if you insist up it, we suppose we will have to let you have the State Senator, but don't ask us for anything more, for wo really cannot accommo dato you. The great firm of E. Remington & Sons, is somewhat embarrassed, by reason of not getting their pay from foreign governments to which they have furnished immense lots of arms. The creditors of the firm will take long paper and assist them to continue business. The Jamieson stave mill started up on Monday. Tho firm have not many bolts at the mill, but have a large quantity in the woods, which were not hauled in last winter, owiug ,o the scarcity of snow. The work of putting these bolts to the mill has com menced, and will proceed until the whole lot is in. The low price of oil des not affect the stave business. Mr. Geo. S. Morgan has beea.put ting in oak timber up nt Sugar Rtin, for Messrs. Derickon & Co., has run down to the mill some seventy-five thousand feet of logi, board measure. This, when sawed up into bolls, will make about 225 cords, which will man ufacture 75,000 staves. .Tho prospects aro that the proprietors will have enough stock on hands to keep even Adams busy this season. Horace Jones, of Tidioute, keeps on hands a large and varied assort ment of fishing tackle of all kinds, and can suit anybody who will take the troublo to examine his stock. And when it comes to repairing anything, from a single-barrel pistol to a breech loading shot-gun ; from a fishing-rod to a combination lock Horace will be found at home. His prices are always reasonable and bis work always satis factory. NOTICE EXTRAORDINARY.
