Several parties have beeu here for a week or more for the purpose of trap ping pigeons. We have not heard of any being captured by them. -Wo notico several of our thrifty people getting their lots ready for spring onions and lettuce Tionesta has some of the best gardeners to be found anywhere. Mr. J. II. Dingman has excited our gratitude by presenting us several bnnclics of the finest celery we have ever seen at this time of year. It was crisp, tender, spicy perfect. Much obliged. Esq. Irwin was suddenly called away on Monday last by a telegram which stated that bin brother, Richard, was lying dangerously ill. It is to be hoped that Mr. Irwin will soon recov er his usual health. Attention is culled to the new ud vorlUenicut of Hyde, Shattuck, & Co., manufacturers of breech-loading shot guns, revolvers, pistole, etc. A hey make a single-barrel breech-loading .shot-gun, twist barrel, which is very highly spoken of. Price 818. The stave mill in town is a good thing for the proprietors, and furnishes work fur several parties who might otherwise be obliged to be idle. The refuse of tl:o bulls is sawed up into stove-wood, and ii burned by nearly all in town who have suitable stoves. Sucker fishing is quite brisk at present writing, but we believe sucker catching is not so brisk. We have puma very patient fishermen here, who only neod a nibblo or two to keep them fishing busily for half a day. No large tarings have been caught this surinjr;. ' If tho weather does not cool off materially in tint next two or three weeks, the trouting seasou will bo ush ered in with a grand rush. About 8 11 the tackle i if town ii fixod up in good shape, ami tho owners (hereof arc look ing fnxiously forward to the 1st of April. Happening across the river a few dajs ago, we called in and took a look at Prof. Monday's piano. It is indeed a beautiful and valuable instrument, upright, linely finished, and of German manufacture." Its tone U at least as good as that of any instrument wo ever heard. Mr. S. Robinsou.of Mercer, broth erof the Mctsrs. Robinson of our place, came here last week for a little pigeon hunt. While he was not very success ful in. bagging pigeons, he succeeded in making many .friends among the disciples .of the rod and cua. He de parted for bis home yesterday. " Our lumbermen are all very busy, and our town is rather quiet by rea son of our young men being employed in rafting and running out timber aud lumber. It would be a calamity should we not have our regular spring flood, as nearly all our lumbermen depend on more water to get their lumber to market. Some oueer craft pass down the river every spring flood, carrying eve ry thing from a cargo of patatoes to a slock of due parlor furniture. Some people take this method of emigrating, loading their effects on a boat, and floating dowu the Allegheny and Ohio until they get a good chance to sell their boat, when they take the pro ceeds aud proceed toward the petting sun --James Swavcilcy, an employee of the Central House, is treading the rough pathway of life on a pair of crutches. A week or more ago he had );e misfortuue to catch a barrel of oi which fell from a wagon, on one of his legs, und the ro.-u.lt was a bad sprain and several bruises, from which he bus Buffered a good deal. The leg is 1m proving. The School IWrd met according to appointment, a quorum being pres cut. The question "to bite or not to hire" a teacher for the remaining month cf tho term, came up. and it ; was decided that the upper school should be closed for the balance of the term, it being believed that a new teacher could not advance tho pupil much iu their studies in the short time liivon. Thero was to be a pond flood in tho creek yesterday, but wo believe that it was postponed until to-day. To those who do not know what a "pond flood" is, wo would explain that brack ets, consisting of board3 fastened on top of the dam, enabling it to hold perhaps four to five more feet of water than usual, oro erected on all the dams on tho creek'up as far a8 thero is eny lumber to run. At a rriveu time the bracket on tli9 upper dam is cut, nnd the lumber floated down on the water; when the hea 1 Dearly reaches the next dam the bracket on that is cut, and so on down to the mouth. To those who are not accustomed to these things it seems queer that the rafts should inn ahead of the water, yet such is th case, pie.oes often sticking in the chan nel, and having to wait for tho water to catch up with and float them off. Tho county political campaign is commencing earlier this 3'ear than ever before since the county was erect ed. Al-ady it is pretty well known all through the county who aud how many arc to run for the nomination for the important offices within tho gift of the people of tho county, and the chances of tho different candidates are as freely discussed now as they havo heretofore-been in May or June. The Couuty Committee will probably meet during May Court, and fix tho timo for holding the primary elections, at which time we may expect the fullest vote ever enst at a primary election in rorest County. Mr. Wm. Richards, of tho North Ward, is proceeding to build a front part to his house just as if times were good and money plenty. Pat Joyce is at the stonework, the lumber is on the ground, and the frame will soon arise. We havo not heard what t lie dimen sions of the new part of tho house are to be, but from a view from the other side of tho road, would guess about 20x24. His improvements aro solid, and will stayd nl Time's ravages a good while- By-the-way, Mr. Rich ards will please accept our thanks for favor rendered during his late trip. Mr. McClure, of Rrookston, was in town yesterday, and made us a call. He informs us. that the father of Mr. F. W. Brooksdied, in New York a few days ago, and that Mr. R. had just gone on to attend tho funeral. He also informs us that two large new boilers havcbeen put in tha tannery, aud that business is brik there. Some time ago we were promised a complete description of iho tannery and process of tanning, etc., but suppose- our coi- respondent has been too busy to write it up for us. Mr. A. A. Copeland informs v. that the Messrs. McLaughlin are siuk ing another, well on tho Kepler Farm, in Harmony . township. Conversing with a pumper from that farm yestar day, he informed us that the old wells wells were holding out to pretty nearly the amount they produced when they were first struck, but that they were never as largo as was at first reported It is altogether likelv that considerable Forest county territory will be devei oped during the present season. A fev "Alleghcnys" started down the river from here on Sunday, and several of our able-bodied citizens are down with them. Altogether not more than four or five Alleghenys hare gone from here, and while the run will not be as larcre this year as usual, of course there will bo quite a quantity sent down yet this spring, if the water keeps up. Wo have heard nothing as to the prices lumber is bringing this year. Mr. Hague, Agcut for the Messrs Grandin, of ,Tidioutc, started for tUe great Grandiu farm iu Dakotah, on Monday last. He goes by way of St Louis, where he proposes to purchase a lot of mules for work on the farm About 70i)O acre3 of land will be put under cultivation ou the farm this sea son. The seaboard pipe line is no long er an uncertainty. The project is now so far advanced that contracts have beeu. let for the manufacture of a largo portion of the pipe necessary for the construction of the line. A considenv ble quantity of pipe has also been pur chased, and is now being ph.ccd on the ground. The building of the lino will be begun at points where opposition is expected from railroad companies. Success to the enterprise.
