The Commissioners' Land Sales 3'esterday attracted quite a number of land buyers to our place. It is our firm belief that tho day is not far dis tant when these lands will be valuable property. Buckwheat cakes are getting out of season, but ham and eggs are get ting a bad racket just now. And the combination is one which seems to tickle the palate of the average con Burner. A young man named Marlin S,cott, of Brookville, while fooling with a revolver, a week ago Sunday, discharged it and caught a bullet iu his leg. No bones were broken, but perhaps a bad habit was. The latest dispatches on tho sub ject are to the effect that peace will be concluded and the treaty between Russia aud Turkey signed in a few days. It Is hardly probable that oth er powers will mix in. Anderson, of the Louisiana Re turning Board, has been sentenced to two years iu the penitentiary, at bard labor. It was generally conceded be fore the trial, that he would be con victed and sentenced, whether innocent or guilty. A cane was presented to our re tiriog Burgess, Mr. G. WT. Robinson on Friday evening last, S. D. Irwin making a neat and appropriate speech of presentation, to which Mr. Robinson replied, returniug thanks in a few well chosen words. The Silver Bill with the Senate amendments having passed the House the question which now agitates the public mind, is, "will the Presiden sign the bill ?" It will make very lit tie difference in the final result wheth er he does or not, as the bill is bound to become a law. A correspondent of the Pittsburgh Telegraph has interviewed Hon. Geo A. Jenks in regard to hid caudidacy for the Governorship on tho Democrat ic side. Mr. Jeoks is reported as be ing indifferent about the matter, and is credited with saying that the ap proaching campaigu would be"labori ous, responsible and uncertain. Mr. W. W. Thomas, of Lacy'g Mills, informs 113 that tho Messrs. Lacy have drawn about 2,700,000 feet of lumber to tho landing at Lncytown. and have about 700,000 feet at flie mill yet. The mill is cot running at present. Two-tbinis of tho Senate, three fourths of the House and about nine tenths of the people havo declared for silver coin, aud yet there may be louud here and there an editor or a spouter, who persists in playing a tola in the "Three Tailors of Tooley Street." Pitts. Telegrath. Within the last.year we have re ceived a number of subscribers from among the Democracy of Forest, and we place their names on our list with deasure. And we must say for our wayward brothers that they are prompt- paying and appreciative subscribers. "It's an ill wind that blows no body good." This has been an unfa vorable winter for lumbermen, on account of the mild weather and ab sence of enow, but in has been very favorable for economy of fuel. Many of' those who laidjiu their usual amount of coal last full, will have considerable quantities of it tossummer. By the returns from the election nt Elk City, we see that Mr. E. C. Majs, formerly of Clarington, has been elected Constable of Elk township, iu which Elk City and Shippenville are both located. It is probable that he will have considerable business, aud he will undoubtedly make an efficient officer. The ground-hog is a delusion aud a snare. Un the zd inst. ne naa am ple opportunity to observe his shadow, and we have had no cold weather or sleighing to speak of since. Weather- prophets, ground-hogs and "Old Prob abilities," have all been at fault this winter, and their predictions hereafter will be taken with a considerable de gree of allowancr. The amount of timber put in for the Pittsburgh market will not be nearly as great as usual in Forest County, hence it is likely that it will bring better figures than it has for a few years past, as, of course, it should, the expense of putting it in being con siderably increased on account of the scarcity of snow. Judge Cook, of Cooksburg, has a larger amount to run than any other man or firm that we have heard of. -During the pigeon-hunting in this section last fall, there were a couple of breech-loading shot guns lost in the woods, so we are informed, under the following circumstances : The parties were in the woods at night, when it be gan to rain, betting their guns up beside some trees ; whilo gathering some firewood tho rain put their fire out, and they could not, in the dark ness, fiud the place again, and finally cot lost themselves. Wo have never heard of the guns being found, and presume they are still standing up be side thoso trees. The Standard Oil Company, the monopoly which is credited with keep ing down tho price of oil, is in trouble Several of the silcntj partners of the concern, notably II. L. Taylor & Co., are suing the company for their share of the 'drawbacks" or "rebates" on the transportation of oil, which have been paid the company in violatiou of the Constitution of this State. It is be lieved that the Standard will have a hard struggle to maintain its position as arbiter of the fate of tho oil pro ducers, A number of our readers are in tercsted in the California glass ball shootist, and as an instance of his skill wo clip the following : "At Oakland, near San Francisco, Dr. Carver, with a rifle, , broke 885 glass balls out of 1,000, tossed from a point twenty feet distant. The time including all stoppages, a as three hours and three miuutes. Severa Eastern men were present." The match between Dr. Carver and Bogardua seems to hang fire, and it looks as if the latter were not as keen for the coutest as he might be. The Dr. once defeated him iu a match o this kind, which may account for his diffidence. The Nursery for March has been received.
