Church in this place, com mencing on Saturday evening next. The Presiding Elder will be present and conduct the services. Mr. Brennan will have a few tons of hard-coal to dispose of from thi stock he has ordered. Those who need any of it should see him at once. -The Broolcville Graphic wants to be shown a town without a John Smith. Tionosta is that town, come over and see it. Attention is called to the new ad vertisement of the Brooklyn branch of the Goodyear Rubber Co. Many use ful articles are advertised. There is talk of getting up a do nation in Tionesta for Bev. Allen. Whether matters have been shaped to any certainty we have not learned. The spring timo is almost here, and it might be a good idea for those fathers having fair daughters to repair their gates and put sharp brads on the top of them. . Some five hundred bills have been introduced during the present session of our Legislature. As only a few of these are of general importance, a large number will not be acted on. The Itidiana Progress thinks that if Harry White and Geo. Jenks are nominated for Governor by their re spective parties, we shall have the same old fight over again, on an en larged scale. To-morpow is St. Valentine's day. Look out for those highly-colored pic tures with verses underneath. They have already commenced operations, and nearly everybody will probably be favored. A man named John Mitchell has been appointed Sheriff of Butler coun ty by the Governor, to take the place mado vacant by Sheriff Walter, who was ousted a short time since for ille gally securing his election. -Tho Stave Mill is running on full time, and bolts are coming in rapidly. Tho proprietors- have contracted a large quantity of bolts and the proba bilities are that the mill will bo kept busy for some time to come. Hon. R. B. Brown, formerly of the Clarion Democrat is making quite a figure in the Free Pipe Lioo busi ness. He was sent by the Producers' Council to Philadelphia and Pitts burgh to talk tho matter up, and made the bill many friends. A man named James Johnson, of Lacytown, was hurt by a stick of tim ber falling on ene of his legs on Mon day last, and it was feared that the limb was broken. Dr. Blaine was sent for, and he says the leg is badly bruised, but uo bones broken. The Bean Farm Methodists and their friends made a raid on Rev. Al len at his home at Stewart's Run, one evening last week, and left with him a goodly amount of provisions and household articles. A nicer thing couldn't have Bean doue. During the late snow teams came in from Crawford' and Erie counties to do hauling in our lumber woods There was plenty of work for them all as long as snow lasted. Present indi cations leads us to believo that we will have another run of sleighing, which would Buit everybody. From reports received and pub lished from timo to time, it will be seen that the public schools of our county are in a flourishing condition, and that a goodly portion of tho pu pils are steady and prompt in their attendance. That's the only way to acquire an education. Mr. Selden Whitman informs us that operations have actually com menced on his place and a well is be ing put down just back of the Oldtown boat scaffold. He has high hopes of making his everlasting fortune out of this venture, and he has our best wish es for success. Ex-Sheriff Van Giesen came home about ten days ago, with a sore leg the one which was hurt two years ago, and which had healed. Dr. Coburn lanced it and it is now healing rapidly. The well on which he was engaged, on the Sloan Farm, at Elk City, is down, acd is pumping fifteen barrels per day. Mr. S. C. Sloan is &ho in town, and is iu good health. Tylersburg Topics. Tyleksburg, Feb. 12. Ed. Republican : John Brown'i body lies mould'ring in the grave, and Tylersburg goes marching on. There is to be a big fight on election day to decide our township matters, and also a fight in regard to a Poor House in this county. Your corres pondent don't desire a hand in cither, but prefers to live in some private lam ily. The enow has gone, and you ought to see the lumbermen, their faces are as long as a shot gun, and they look about as dangerous. No oil this week, but in about ten days look out 1 Rev. Payne is holding meetings at the Myers Church. Yours, Jeff. Recollect the spring Elections which take place on Tuesday next, 19tn inst. A great many important offices are to be filled, and the best material wo have should be used. The following ft a list of the officers to be elected in Tionesta Boro : 1 person for Burgess. 6 persons for Councilmen, (3 iu each ward.) 2 persons for School Directors, 3 yrs. j i ii a ic 1 person for Constable -and Collec tor. 1 person for High Constable. 1 person for Judge of Election. 2 persons for Inspectors of Election. 2 persons for Overseers of the Poor. 2 persons for Boro Auditors. Some of our citizens have put up small amounts of ice, which they get along tho river "shore ice," as it is called. It is about six inches thick, and will answer when none better can be had. - Court week comes on apace. Then is the time when our subscribers come in lo settle up their accounts in such cumbers that we can scarcely find places to put tho money. But don't let any one hesitate on this account some of our neighbors are poor, and we will pass over any money we don't need to them. We would be obliged to those of our friends who reside near where oil operations are going on within our county, if, when any new wells are started, oil struck, or anything definite in regard to the development of terri tory for oil purposes transpires, they would drop us a line or send us word. Our business keeps us so close at home that we cannot ascertain theso things by personal visits, and we desire to keep our readers fully posted in this particular. A Brookston'corrcspondent sends us tho following item of local news : "Last Monday (5th inst.) the oldest child of John Hollquist was severely burned during tho absence of Mrs. II. It seems that Mrs. II, went out to call on her near neighbor, leaving the children alono in the house, and on her return met her oldest, running out of the house with his clothes on fire. She tried to Smother it with her dress, but failing in that, threw him in the snow and rolleThim over until she had ex tinguished the flames. - It is thought the child may recover." The boys in the lumbering shan ties, after working hard all day, have considerable sport among themselves in the evening. . Each has a nickname by which he is known to all the rest, some of them descriptive, some ridic ulous and some scandalous. The cook is generally called "Mrs." somebody, and one of theso hash-slingers got up a dish the other day which ho called "miraculous pudding," consisting of cold buckwheat cakes chopped up, po tato parings, cold beans, and other like ingredients. The pudding was too rich for the stomachs of the lumbermen, and had to be thrown out. Tionesta Schools. Room 2, Enrolled 45. It is generally celebrated in this coun try by a dance, but we hear- of none coming off this year. We take the following items of Forest county news from a communi cation which appeared in tho Clarion Republican of last week : "Your correspondent took a trip through the lower part of Forest coun ty, and found those in the lumber business busily engaged in their work. "Troutman boasts of having the heaviest stick of timber ever brought to that landing. But I think Cooks burg is ahead, having the "boss" stick of timber on tho Clarion river, being 100 feet in length, and containing 324 cubic feet. "I think they have been using all the daylight since the enow fell in drawing timber, for Judge Cook claims to have about 75,000 cubic feet of tim ber on the landing. Knowing the Judge to be a good natured gentleman, I would not like to accuse hiin of making bis men and teams work after night." Dcookston School. Report for the month ending Feb ruary 1st.
