Any parties needing hard coal can get it at rea sonable figures by applying to him immediately. Messrs. . J. and A. Bonner, of Stoneboro, made a flying visit to our town yesterday. Both are looking hearty, and report business yety fair at their place. D. V. Clark, successor to C. C. Thompson, in tho Tidioute Insurance Agency, was in town yesterday, look ing after his business here. He will undoubtedly make a popular age.il, and do a good business. ; Our ice houses are yet empty, and fenrs ore entertained that they will re main so unless ico is shipped in from a distance. It is better to hold on awhile, however, and Bee if we don't get a big freeze before spring opens. From Mrs. Heath we learn that Mr. Jus. Dimond, her futlicr, an old citizen of this place, is at present lying very ill at the houss of his son-in-law, Mr. Siverlcy, at Siverleyville. What the nature of the illness is we are not informed. . , The County Commissioners have levied 7 mills county, and 2 mills bond tux for the current year. The tax last year was 10 mills county and 2 mills bridge tax. . This is a reduc tion of a little more than one-fourth oi the tax, and w'ould indicate careful and intelligent management of county matters by the present board. Report of German Hill school for month ending Feb. 1, 1878 : Average attendance, 17. Not ab sent during the mouth Verna Heath, Carrie Abler;, Vina Zuendel, Carlos Heath, Eddie Heath,.' John. Zuomlel, Ernst Zuendel. 7, . Clara Heath, ' Teacher. The Free Pipe Lino bill has been indefinitely postponed by the Senate, the opponents of the bill believing that this action would practically kill it, for this session, at least. The friends of the bill, however, will use their utmost endeavors to put it thro' the House at once, aud then concen trate their energies on the Senate. It is hardly probable that the' bill will pass this winter. A week from to-morrow is St. Valentine's Day, and then look out for-colored pictures which will tell you what you look like, with some lines underneath 'which will tell you what the individual who sent it thinks of you and your character. ;Itis use less to rave over these things. Of course the day is taken advantage of by one's enemies to annoy him, but as it is always done anonymously, it is better to take it cool. Wm. Reck, at his job on Sugar Run, is taking out sumo very fine tim ber. Lnst week he took out a stick of pine SO feet long, 33 inches face, and 31 inches deep, no knot ou the face. The stick contains 210 5 16 feet cubic measure, or 25973 feet board measure. The tree was broken in fulling, or we snpposa there would have been a beau tiful stick ot timber taken out from it, probably sixty feet in length. We acknowledge the receipt from Mr. Peter Shugert, of a complimentary ticket to the Skating Rink at Tidioute. The ice in the Rink is now in splendid condition, and thote who understand the art of skating ran find no more pleasant or healthy method of enjoying an hour or two. We would recom mend our people, especially those who are skaters, to call at the Riuk, if they visit Tidioute this winter, r Our young people seem to be making the roost of the present run of sleighiug. We have heard of but one general "upset," and that occurred to a party which went out to Stewart's Run to a Biugiog school last Saturday eveuing. Nobody was hurt. Team oters and lumbermen are also tr'iing advantage of the snow, and staves aud coal are coming in, freight is going out, aud lumber and limber are being moved as rapidly at teams can be got to do it. Our weather prophets do not seem to place much reliance on gioundhog, but prophecy that the snow will not remain long with us. Hickory Correspondence. HtcKor.Y, Feb. 5th, 1878. Ed. Republican iDcar Sir,- It is quite unnecessary to tell you that we have 'plenty of snow now; and the groundhog in our favnr for a six weeks' continuance of the same. Our busy citizens who are iu the timber and lum ber trade each wear a glowing smile when perched upon a stick of timber, en route for the river at a "two-forty" rate of speed. About hiilf the usual amount of logs will be drawn to the mills. Hence a large falling off in boards aud manufactured lumber for the next spring's market. Esq. C. H. Church is confined to his room nith a gash cut in his foot. Religious revivals hare closed here, about seventy pilgrims having re nounccd the teachings of Canon Far rar and Henry Ward-Tiltou, and have taken a matter-of-fact position and most strenuously, iusist that there is a "hell," and have forced "Auld Klootie" from his stronghold on Hick ory to Whig Hill. At the latter place it is said thac he encountered "Brother Stone," of the M. E. persuasion, who again gave him battle, capturing many of his "armor-bearers," who have al ready opened their batteries on their old and trusty leader, and ho will prob ably be driven to Red-Hot or Clarion County before this reaches your many readers. By tho way, Brother Stone filed ex ceptions to the biblical views of Henry Ward B., aud claimed that if the views or allegations of the several able pul pit orators had to be mot that it might as well come now ts any time, aud that he was ever ready to combat such fallacies Bet up by "learned men" against the long and strong chain of evidence so often set forth in the sa cred scriptures. His arguments were clear, forcible and logical. He also claimed that the same ideas had- been smouldering iu the church for some time, while bo me ministers were devi ating from preaching "Christ crucified" and were preaching on the side of the latter day refinements, which ho held up in holy horror to the good common sense of Ins congregation, Ac, vc. Our school commenced hero on the 28th ult. Our directors requested the Co. SupU to send a teacher here with a "strong right arm." He camo he caught the bull by tho horns he brought order and discipline out of confusion. He did it with a thorn bush with the thorns partly trimmed off. One boy "caught a Tartar," or rather, a good, square threshing, and this created quite a sensation. Some of the parents declared that a thorn bush partly trimmed was too severe, but many found fault with the teacher for trimming it at all, as parts oi thorns half an iuch long was entirely too short to chastUe a boy with. Your correspondent is of the opinion that if he was a pupil, it would be better to "trim closely," but would repeat after old Solomon, "dou't spare the rod to spoil the. child." As there were no bones broken it remains now to be seen whether parents, directors, teach er or children will hold the fort. We will report results in due time. Gum Blanket. Tylersburg Topics. Tylersburg, Pa., Feb. T, 1878. Ed. Republican : Our little town is under a big strain of excitement at present. There is an Order of Good Templars and a Literary Society here, Both hold forth in Green Bros. Hall, and both are iu a flourishing condi tion. Mr. Jos. Green is Worthy Chief in one and W. S. Love President of the other, and some fine points are dis cussed. Payne is hauling lumber to Tionesta Creek to run iu the spring. Green Bros, are doing a fine busi Des in the way of selling goods. D. Bowman never allows auy one to outdo him ; that old white head means 'biz." every time. Mr. Adams is making a fine run on staves. Bolts are coming in very fust. Rev. Payne preached in tho M. E, Church last evening. James Stanley, Gilfillan and Jake Walters aie up in Old Forest putting up an oil rig for Dr. TowleY, which is located one-half mile from the Centre. Forest is bound to be an oil field as soon as oil brings a fair price. "The Long-Legged American," is the name of the oil well at Haskell's, but Gleason is the proprietor. When they strike oil look out for Tionesta oil sometimes runs down the valleys. Business iu general is lively. Since the 6Uow came there are fro we one to five hundred logs going in to Payne's Mill per day. Yours, Jeff. Mr. Wm. Dale, who, with Mr. J. &. Hood, is getting out timber on Lit tle Coon, just above Nebraska, reports that bears are quite numerous, and that several wolves have been seen there within the past two or three weeks. Mr. Ledab'ur informs us that a bear hunt was recently gotten up, dogs sent in to drive out the bears, and men placed on the crossings. The bears were too keen-scented, however, and did not cross at their usual places, and so escaped. Hon. J. B. Agnew has favored us with the Report of the Auditor Gene ral, and the Report of the Pennsylva nia Society for the Prevention of Cru elty to Animals. In the latter we notice that Mr. R. B. Bell, of Perry, is the Forest County Representative of the Society, and Hon. Jos. G. Dale is one of tho Honorary Vice Presidents. It Is undoubtedly a good society, but one in which it is hard t interest the general public, We present a variety of advertis ing this week, which is interesting to us, and will be to many of our read ers : Tho Auditors' Report shows the con dition of tho County finances, which are getting iu a very satisfactory shape.
