Dot be lost light of, we shall issao no paper next week. The office will be opeo for busiueea during our vacation. Rev. Elliot will preach in the Presbyterian Church, on Sunday next morning and evening. Sabbath School at 3 o'clock P. M. Rev. Allen will move toBtewart'a Run in a couple of weeks, there to make his abode until Conference aenda hint somewhere else. The new prospectus of the Oil City Daily Derrick, ia given to our readers to-day. It ia the best paper published, for oil news. . . We received a cony of a paper oubliehed at Elk City, Jast week, call ed tho Enterprise. It ia email, but seems well patronized. Those of our readers who indulge in dancing, can satisfy their desires in thai direction by 'attending the party at the Lawrence House next Tuesday, New Year's evening. Mr. McKim and lady, of Oil City .are visiting t-day at Lsq. Tate s. Mr. McK. favored us with a call this morning, and we find him an intelligent and agreeable gentleman. Mr. Geo. Bluerock, of Minister, left a beet weighing 9t lbs. at our of fice on Wednesday last. He raised a good crop of these vegetables, and some larger than the specimen left with us. Our borough schools are closed for a short vacation. They will start up fcgaiu next Monday. Mr. Dunn is visiting his home in Crawford. Miss Mays, we believe, is in town. "The boys" (and their girls) had a danre ou Monday night at Par tridge's Hall. , Wo understand that all who were present enjoyed them selves to their utmost capacity. 'This is "Court Week," but the Associates, in the absence of the Presi dent Judge," held only a short argu ment Beseiou, , The Commissioners were in session, and did considerable business. " The pigeons are still in our neigh borhood, and notwithstanding tbo vast quantities which have been killed they do not perceptibly diminish in. num ber. They still get a few salutes every time they go over our place. Whether Turkey In Europe is entirely vanquished, is yet an open question, but Turkey in America was so badly scooped yesterday, that there is not enough loft for mediation "by the powers." Th Dutch Hill well is down about a thousand feet, without getting any encouragement to speak of. Mr. Coruwell has decided to put it down 1200 feot, aod the drill ia pounding away. The election contest in Crawford county, between Church and Hender son has drawn Judgs Wetmore into its toils as pne of the arbitrators. Mr. Ilendereon charges that out of 5,812 votes recoived by Church, 1.493 were illegal. It will be sorue time before the case is settled. Attention is called to the new ad vertisement of William Read & Sona, of Boaton, who are amoag the mo6t re liable gun firma in the U. S., and who make a specialty of the "Scott" gun, the favorite piece of many of America'a best sportsmen. Too late for last week's paper we received from the pastor t the M. E. Church at Hickory, a communication in regard to a revival in progress there, conducted by Rev. H. Payne. Much interest was being manifested, and as the pastor expresses it, "Much good is being done. " Jno. R. Stroup killed a bear, up near Balltown last week, and a roan named Grove killed one of the cubs. We are also informed that Davy in lands recently killed a full-grown bear in tho same neighborhood. And this is not a very good season for bears, either. The proceedings of the Teachers Institute, which we publish in this is sue, will be found dry reading, by those not immediately interested. We have several orders for papen contain ing them, but had we known that the Preta was publiahiugthem, would have filled our orders with that paper, and filled ujp our space with other matter ; but we had them almost up before the les was out, and really coulda t at ford to lose tho work. The Teachers' Institute was a suc cess in every particular. In addition to the lectures, essays &c, chronicled in last issue, Supt. Thompson, whose name will be found once sr twice in the "proceedings," lectured on Wednes day evening ou "Schoola and Fami lies." On Thursday even!ng Mr. T. D. Dunn read an instructive essay on "Educational Barriers." V. E. Lathy Esq., delivered an interesting lecture on "The Tower of Letters," and M. W. Tate, Esq., read a polished essay on "The Power of Education." On Friday evening Mr. Kennedy King, of Erie entertained the audience with some choice readings and declama tions, after which a gold-headed cane was presented by Mr. A. C. Porter on behalf of the teachers of Forest coun tv f Prof. II. 8. Brockway. This - wound up the exercises, and every body departed with their minds full of wisdom and their hearts filled with joy. -Christmas was duly observed in Tionesta. Numerous turkeys, chick ens, pigeons, &c. were cooked, devour ed bnd enjoyed. For the time being, animosities of all kinds seemed to be buried under a veil of benevolence and good feeling, and we venture to say that everybody leels better for the way in which they spent Christmas. The juveniles were all iu their glory, and evidently wished that Christmas came more than ouce a year. Mr. W. S. Baldwin, Supt. of the Woods Heirs' Farm, who ia at present stopping in Oil City, was iu town last week, and informed us that two wells would be put down next spring on said tract. Talking with one of the drillers of the well put down there last fall, he expressed his belief that oil would be found somewhere on the tract. Chas. Taylor, Esq., an old and well-known lawyer of Fanklin, has been appointed President Judge of Venango County, in place of Judge Tiunkey, resigned. There were nu merous applicants for the positioned tho appointment hung fire a good while. The people will elect a Judge for the balance of the unexpired term next fall. i ' New crossings have been pet in at several placca in town, making a vast improvement in that line. We notice oue at the river bridge, one in front of the Presbyterian Church, one across Elm St. at the blacksmith shop, one across May St., below the Court TTouw. and one across Helen St. at Cobb's. All are put down in a sub stantial manner. We have received Vol. 1-No. 1, of Vkk's Illustrated Monthly Magatine, for January, 1878. I.t ia devoted to Horticulture, Floriculture, and useful knowledge to farmers, gardeners and others. It is altogether such a peri odical as should cminate from such a source, being the best of its class. The subscription price is $1.25 per year. Address James Vick, Rochester, N. Y. Each week we put a label on the paper of every subscriber, which, if properly studied will give each one a statement of how hia subscription ac count stands at this ' office Fer in stance if a label reads "John Take abite 175," it shows that John is back with hia subscription from January 1st, 1875 to the present time, and that it is time he was squaring up. Mr. J. I. Range informs us that the case of small-pox which has been accredited to Stewart's Run, is in fact on Pitholo Ridge, and that no one has as yet suffer red from his indiscretion. The case was one of varioloid instead of small-pox. Call at Robinson & Bonner's and see the Livingston Corn Sheller, two sizes, suit--Me for farmers and poultry raisers. 37 3t LIAllItlXD.
