"M'if LOCAL AND MISCELLANEOUS. Rev. W. 0. Allen will preach in tho M. E. Church next Sunday, morn ing and evening Services to com mence promptly at 11 oclock A. m. and 7 P. M. Our worthy P. M. is a little "off tho belt" in fact, sick. We hope he may speedily recover. Col. Thomas' condition has not changed materially since he left here. His wife went on to West Chester over a week ago. The meetings at the M. E. Church are being continued by Rev. Allen. Everybody is invited to attend. Ser vices begin promptly at 7 o'clock. Dr. Coburn has a bad case of fracture on haudi which is rather too much for his school of medicine, lie had tho misfortune to break a hammer off "his 6hot-gun yesterday morning, and doubtless tuany pigeons owe their life to the accident. It was supposed that we would have a change of time on the railroad, commencing hut Sunday, but as we have received no uotice to that effect, and the trains seem to be running as ueual, we guess the change was not made. We have had a slight taste of winter snow, frost, slush ice, bad colds and all the premonitory symp toms attendant upon the ushering in of the cold season. It now has more the appearance of a flood than of sleighing, as it is raining steadily.' Tho new Court House at Warren was dedicated with appropriate cere monies on Monday last. Among the items in the programme was an ad dress in behalf of the County Commis sioners, by Hon. W. D. Brown, and a response by Judge Wetrnore. Wo hoar very little in regard to deer thi season. We saw Rob. Has let wheeling a fine buck to the depot last week, but who the lucky chap who killed it was, we did not learn. Should a good tracking snow come within a week or so, we 'may expect to see a good many brought in. We understand that Rev. W. O. Allen, who has lately taken unto him self a wife, will shortly move to Stew art's Run, there to live and keep faoose during the balance of his stay on this circuit. -We are truly sorry to' have hiui leave town, for beside beiog au earnest pastor he is a good citizen. - Prof. Brockway gives notice in thin issue of the Teachers' Annual -Institute. He has taken pains to engage instructors and lecturers for tho occa sion, and expresses his belief that this will be one of the best sessions of the Teacher's Institute ever held in Forest County. It is to be hoped that there will be a full attendance. Ex-Sheriff Van Giesen visited his home on Saturday last, staying until yesterday. He is at prtsont engaged on his lease on the Sloan farm, Elk City, and will commence drilling a well in a few days. If the good wishes of his Forest County friends could help him we are sure he could could count on a fifty-barrel well, at least. A crowd came over from Titus villa yesterday in a four-horse convey ance which we took to be a band wagon. We confidently expected a show of some sort on seeing the pro cession, but it turned out that the par ty were merely over for the purpose of giving our pigeons a benefit. They were all well armed and equipped, and appeared a fine set of fellows. The price of coal hauled Jo from the banks about Newm.iuville and Lickingville still keeps up to about 15 cts. per bushel, on account of the bad roads. As soon as we have a good run of sleighing we may expect a material reduction in the price. Coal can be shipped in by car now dbout as cheap as it can be purchased at home. John Ilutton, the man who is to try to recover damages from P. O. Conver, for alleged libel, is in town, having come here to attend Court, which I19 understood convened on the first iustead of the fourth Monday in December. Aa the juries have been notified not to appear, it is probable that bis case will not come up at this term. The Superior Mill and Knox's are kept busy at work. Until last Saturday the former had been running night and day for some weeks, on ac count of the large number of logs in the boom, which are hard to handlo after the creek freezes over. It is hardly probable that any of the lum ber will be run before next epriDg. TEACHERS' INSTITUTE. To Teachers asd Friends of Edu cation : The Eleventh Annual Session of the Forest County Teachers' Institute will bo held in the School House, Tionesta, commencing Monday, December 17, at 2 o'clock p. M , and closing Friday December 21. Efforts will be. made to have the work done by all as prac tical as possible. Classes will be form ed and practical lessons given in teach ing. Every Teacher in the County should attend the Institute. Come the first day and remain until the close. This is an opportunity for improve ment, and you owe it to yourselves and your schools. If there are any teachers in the County so well quali fied as not to need the benefit to be derived, they should be willing to be present and by their influence and ex ample assist others more unfortunate. H. S. Brockway, Co. Supt. ' A full programme of the exercises will be published next week. As to oil news it is limited. The Balltowa well to which we referred last week as being due, is down and dry. Mesars. Grove & Hart are to put down a well forthwith on Hemlock creek, on tract 2823, in Tionesta Twp. The well has been located and work will begin at once. Other ventures are going on as at last report. The ordinance forbidding the transportation of nitro-glycerine and other dangerous explosives through our borough, was duly pnssed, ap proved and published, and yet several parties have informed us that vehicles which they were satisfied contained nitro-glycerine have passed through our place on two or three occasions since. There is no use of passing an ordinance and going to the expense of having it published, unless means are taken ts enforce its provisions, Let the next batch be captured, Rev. Mr. Payne has been here for tho past week, holding a series of meet ings in the M. E. Church. The atten dance on the whole was good, and some interest manifested. Mr. Payne was obliged to leave, on Monday last, on account of his . health. He is an easnest, devoted, Christian worker, and it is the opinion of our people, that had circumstances not rendered it necessa ry for him to leave, he might, perhaps, have been the means of doing much good in this section. It will be observed in another column that tha i juries drawn for Do cember Term of Court are notified that they need not appear. Of course, if the juries don't come in, some of thoso very interesting cases Bet down for this term cannot be tried, which will be a great disappointment to those of our people who calculated to spend their holidays listening to learned argu ments by the legal gentlemen who talk for fees. A stave mill is being put up at Jaraie8on's by Mr. J. and others. That U perhaps a better point than this at present, for securing bolts. It will not take long, however, to strip the woods, within a reasonable distance, of the kind of timber suitable for making staves. Dorickson & Ce.'s mill will doubtless start up soon, as the propri etors got a lot of logs down on the late rise, which are being cnt up into bolts. Our people are getting stirred up somewhat on the subject of tramps. On Monday night nine of these pedes trians took refuge in the jail and had supper and breakfast there. This is piling it on a little thick for . a email pkee, aud our Council will undoubt edly take measures to make these gen tlemen earn their board and lodging, when they claiai our hospitality, here after. . Z. T. Shriver, Albert and Wilbur Grove, John Hart and Chas. Hill, all whom pursue the greasy phantom of petroleum in other sections, are or have been in town during the past week. All are hearty and look as if the work agreed with them. "Ab." brought home with him a fine breech-loadiug double gun, with all the accoutrements and now the pigeons will have to fly high. Mr. John Quinn has had a severe attack of pneumonia for a week past, and is yet confined to his bed. He was recovering very rapidly, but took a fresh cold on Saturday, and it was for a little time rather doubtful wheth er he could recover, but we are glad to learn that he it now nearly if not quite out of danger. Dr. Blaine has charge of the case. The sidewalks, and more particu larly the stone steps about town be came very slippery yesterday, by rea son of the rain freezing as it fell. At such times there appears to enter into the heart of man a spirit of destruc tion, and many are the desperate meas ures resorted to. Yesterday afternoon we saw a gentleman trying to break a large stone step by sitting down vio lently upon it. The result was a sad disappointment to him, for the stone was not injured in the least. On Monday morning and evening and Tuesday morning the pigeons flew over Tionesta in vast clouds. Their number was variously estimated by several of our mathematicians, but as there was no means of proving or dis proving their estimates, they were ta ken for what they were worth. Seve ral of our sportsmen got fine bags of pigeous by shooting them as they flew over. We have discontinued tho notice of rewards offered for the prisoners who escaped from the jail in October last. The Sheriff thinks that the reward has been offered long enough to bring in the wandering refugees if they were coming. We suppose they are "only waiting" until the season for hunting deer expires when they will come in themselves. I desire to call the attention of the citizens of Tionesta and vicinity to my stock of Boots and Shoes for fall trade. My'increased trade this fall has made it necessary for me to put in a much larger stock than ever before, and con sequently have bought at much lower prices than small dealers are obliged to pay.
