r editor. VETiNESDAY WQRMXC, OCT. S, 1S77. REPUBLICAN STATE TICKET. for supreme judge, HON. JAMES P. STEKRETT, or ALLEGHENY COUNTY. FOR STATE TREASURER, CAI'T. W. H. HART, OF MONTGOMERY COUNTY. FOIt AUDITOR GENERAL, HON. J. A. M. PASSMORE, OF SCHUYLKILL COUNTY. REPUBLICAN COUNTY TICKET. FOR TREASURER, WM. LAWRENCE, OF TIONESTA. Hartranft and Cbmerort. Tho Democratic papers tire making n mountain out of a molehill, when t'ley try to make it appear that there is likely to be a rupture between Gov ernor Hartranft and Senator Cameron. In speaking upon this subject the AVilliamsport Gazette and Bulletin says: "Undue importance is given by some of the papers to the defeat of Mr. How ard J. Reeder in the State Convention as foreshadowing au open' rupture be Gov. Hrrtranft and Senator J. P. Cameron. That there is nothing in the report worthy of serious considera tion is proven by the statement of Mr. Ilaeder himself, who thus spoke to a friend after tho convention had finished its work : 'I do not regard the strug gle to-day as a struggle between the Governor and J. Donald Cameron at nil' I believe that Senator Cameron's sympathies, personally, were with me, and that while thev were so, he has maintained a strict neutrality. Mr, Mackey's opposition to mo bad the ef feet of arraying against mo the Cam eron influence in the State, and gave to the contest an nppearanco of that character without it being such in r ality. I believe that the friendship between the Senator and Governor is euch that it is impossible to place them in antagonism to. each other. 1 believe Mr. Mackey opposed me because the Governor was for me. I can conceive of no other reaou. lie has emphati caily ileuied that this was too case, both to myself and to the Governor; .but, nevertheless, I can account for bis action in no other way. That Mr Mackey has beeu estranging himself from the Governor undoubtedly true, and it is owing to the Governor's hav iug refused to make certaiu appoint inents lately which were urged upon him by Mr. Mackey. I believe that this opposition to me on the part of the latter is an attempt to punish the Gov eruor for having refused to comply with his wishes.' Mr. Reeder prompt ly called on Mr. Puss more and con gratulated him on his nomination, and assured him of the earnest support of himself aud friends during the cam paign. Democratic papers, therefore may as well spare themselves the labor of trying to manufacture sentiment out of what dofB not exist." One evidence of an improvement in business is that of u marked demand upon our book houses for their publi cations. Thus far the Fall trade "lias been good, and the indications are that there will be heavy requioilious upon the great establishments which furnish the literary pabulum for the country. These are hopeful signs, and added to thoso other proofs of returning pros- peri ty to which wo referred yesterday, they will help to swell the aggregate and aid in bringing about tho general revival of business. J'liila. North American. M'atterou, of the Louisville Courier-Journal, has a word of advico to the people of Kentucky aud the South generally, regarding mob rul;. He is evidently in earnest when l.e uys : "It is for us, gentlemen of tho South, to call olT the desperadoes. That is tho whole business, and there's no use i-iincing matters. By or before 1880 want that question sent to tho rear. ii-uot, woo to the North, woe to tli, woe to Republican Govern- i'K-i 'u'a." sv. u. dunn There is a little scrap ftom tho record of Amos C. Noyes which will not endear him to the colored ciluenn and tho old anti-slavery mo:i. While in the Legislature, in 18G3, Mr. Noyes voted in favor of "An act to prevent the immigration of negroes and mulat toes into this State." The first section of this bill made it a penal ofTeiiso for any person of color to move into Penn sylvania from any State or Territory ; and the second section provided pen alties for nuy person, white or colored, who aided in bringing negroes or mu lattoes into the State. For such an infamous law Am, is C. Noycs voted. To day he is begging votes among the same people, whom,.lburtecn years ago he either wanted to drive into slavery or incarcerate in Northern prisons be cause of their active opposition to that institution. Clearfield Journul. We commend the more serious tone of the President's speeches at the South. The silly and trifling material sometimes used, was laid aside nt tho cities of the Siuth, where he had the opportunity of speaking before repre sentative Southern audiences, and t he importance of good feeling between the sections, promoted by good faith on the part of the South. He also urgad tho fact that the Si ith has a motive in cultivating the friendly feeling of the North, in that she will thus secure capital to give activity, population and prosperity t. her territory. All this and moro was said in a commend able spirit. We are gratified that tho President takes this course, as it gives some point to his southern tour. Cofh. Gazette. a i:o. r. Howell x co.
