The beech-nut!", ou the contrary, are plen- ty in those sections where beech trees happen to grow. -The improvements about the Court luu'o out huiMinM are coming on ii pace a slow pace. A mistake was made by somebody in tearing down the old building before tho new one was completed. It was due to tho efforts of some of our enthusiastic sport-men that the . John's Kuu oil well was not located . light in the middle of a first-class doer-lick. The lick is a bird in baud ; oil is yet in the bush, as it were. Mr. Conver is sinking a water well in the rear of his residence. He struck a vein of coal under his house when he was digging his cellar, and wo would not be surprised if l:e stnuk oil this time. He always hits some thing he doesn't strike at. Mr. & Mis. Jas. Kelly, of uitu burgh, returned lumo on Thursday last, taking with them their grand daughter, Mis3 May Kelly, who will . attend school in the Smoky City this fail and winter. --An agent for Appleton's artistic publications was in town on Monday, but didn't succeed in taking matiy subscribers. Our citizens appreciate art in all its forms, but prefer to wait n little to seo how that lease of theirs is going to turn out. The Oil City Daily Derrick came to us yesterday mor iing, enlarged, im proved, and having a new head ou. It takes this method of celebrating its . sixth birthday. Tho" nt which was fast in the Reck well, was gotten -ul ou Monday night, and business will pTocecd there ns eoon ns things, mo straightened around They are down 850 feet. On tho Woods Heirs' tract, four miles east of Tionestn, the rig is up for a well, and operations will begin at once, under tho superintendence of Capt. Baldwin. At tho mouth of Little Coon, six miles up Tionesta creek, Messrs. Fox & Fink aro building a rig, and busi ness is to be pushe os fast as circum stances will permit. Dr. Towler is still penetrating into the bowels of the earth in Jenks, town ship near Marienville, and may be ex pected to strike the s.md nt any tim. Mr. D. .Palmer, formerly of Childs & Palmer, lumbermen, is putting up a rig on the Con 1 tract, on Bear Creek, und is to put down several wells there if ho receives proper encouragement. Capt. McLaughlin, of Cash Up no toriety, commenced drilling on the Kepler Farm, in Harmony township, on Monday. Co pel a ml it Co., on same farm are down 500 feet, and should soon be beard from. The owners are sanguine of success. On tho Balltown property it is un derstood that a good deal of leasing is going on, and that there is a prospect of several wells going down there soon. On the Coruwell leases, on Dutch Hill, uolhing is yet being done, but it is expected that work will bo com menced (herd shortly. Enough has beeu contracted for that we can see that tho operators niaau business. It will be seeu from the above show ing that Forest County is now liable to receive a thorough test, and conse quently we may hopo for better limes iu tho future. We have never talked to a practical oil man who did not bc lie'3 that wo had oil iu paying quan tities in a good part of oar couuty, and. taking the belt theory, we are liable to have some of tho best terri tory yet discovered. . Truly the day is dawning. At a meeting of the School Board held on Saturday evening last, the question of school books for this bor ough was taken up, and the following books adapted : Osgood's Headers and Spellers; Guy ot'a Geographies ; Stoddart'a Arithme tics ; Hay's Algebra ; Bullion's revised series of Grammars; Anderson's Gram mur School History and Bryant & Slratton's System of Book-Keeping. These books will be introduced into bur sc hools at a reduced rate, and will be on h ind soon. Due notice of their arrival will be given. It. will be ne cessary fr all pupils to procure these books, as no others will be allowed to be used in the schools. Tho change was made necessary by the fact that there wero iu school sev eral distinct series of text-books, mak ing a large number of extra ehsses necessary. Besides, the school law re quires uniformity in the books used, and by violating this provision we were endangering our State appropriatrffn. Wo have be.n spoken to by direc tors of the townships in our coutity 09 this subject, aud nil present the same complaint lack of uniformity iu school books. It is important that each school board should look to this matter, us we hear that several school districts in the State have this year Ios. their nppmpri ttions from this very neglect. If a uniform series could be adopted throughout the coun ty, it would save much trouble here after. The October number of Ballon a Magazine, a delightful companion for leisure moments, is before us. There is nothing dull in this number. Earl Marble furnishes an illustrated poem ; the author of "The Slaver'u Adven tures" gives us a spirited sketch called "An Unexpected Attack," tho scene of which is laid in Zanzibar; Mis Mary Helen Boodey contributes a giaceful little poem," and then there arc quito a number of love stories and adventures which go to make tho mag azine the best of the kind in the coun try. Published by Thomes & Talbot, 2.'i Iluwley Street, Boston, at SI. 50 per year, postpaid, and for sala at all the periodical depots in the country. There are some quarrelsome deer in lliU county that are making at tempts to frighten our . sportsmen out cf the woods, (simply on account of the freedom which the game law affords them fijr some time yet. We shoul iu't be surprised toliear of somo of them ! bung shot in self defence. Andrew Fleming, Esq., died at his residence, in Waterford, Erie coun ty on tho 31st duy of August ' last, aged about GO jears. "Esq. Fleming w as one of the earliest lesulents of this place, and was for several years en gaged in the mercantile business here with Hon. Jos. G. Dale. He moved to this section iu 1S2G, and remained hero until 18G5, when he moved to Vineland, N. J., aud from there to Waterford, where he resided until his death. He was a man of whom all who were in any way associated with him, and, in fact, all who knew him, speak well. He was evidently a jost and good man, and hi.s death is sin cerely mourned by all his old frierjds and acquaintances. ACIarington correspondent writes us th following particulars of a fatal accident which occurred in that sec tion leeently : Mr. Daniel Woolford, of Barnett twp., Jefferson Co., was suddenly kill ed on Friday, 31st ult. Ho was en gaged in fulling a tree upon which an other had lodged, when the forks of the lodged tree split, one of thsra strik ing and killing him instantly. His head was entirely crushed in, iu which condition he was found by his family. The funeral services took place on the 3d inst., Rev. T. II. Sfiecklt-r .officia ting. Mr. .Woolford was ifr his fifty eighth ycar( and was a quiet inoffen sive man. He leaves a family to mourn his loss.. May a kind provi dence sustain them. J. Y. Saul had an interview with some yellor-jackets on Saturday last, which resulted satisfactorily to the Y. J., but disastrously to j. Y. Mr. Saul was assisting the oilier lmuds. on Mr. Chadwiek's section of the R. R., to re move a tree from tho side hill to be low the truck, when the "jackets" formed a hollow square and charged on him. He could not let go his hold without endangering the life and limbs of himself and the others, who had hold of the tree, so he had to accept their bills under protest ns present ed. When he finally got out he was punctured as full of holes as a seivc. No serious results followed. We notice Col. Hunt, P. V. Mer cilliott, tho Messrs. Hettish and some others, in from Jenks township, $0 tes tify iu the .natter of the B g Level Road business. It appears that more taxes have been collected iu Forest Couuty thau has been expended 011 the road in the county, and an effort is be ing made to get back the surplus. Wo call the attention of our read ers to the lidvertisemeut of the Parker Gun, which appears in this issue. This gun Jias a reputation secoud to none manufactured in the U. S., and those in want of a good breech-loading gun cannot do better than to send their or der to Parker Bros., West Me;ideo, Connecticut. There is au immense amount of freighting done over the P. T. it B. R. R. at present, and the road must be paying immensely. The stock is on tho rise, and if the work continues it will soon be one of the best slocks in the market. D. McCargo, the Super intendent is doing a big business with this and tho A. V. Road. There are no idlers on either branch. Soms candidate or candidates for the penitentiary stole all our little store of grapes, on Sunday night last. They were not quito ripe, and we live in hopes that the perpetrators will have such gripes in their stomachs as will cause them to wish they had never been born. We will reward any per son who will give us certain informa tion, as to who was the thief or thieves. We have received from the pub lishers, Messrs. Kuako & Co., Pitts burgh, a beautiful song and chorus, in sheet form, entitled "'Neath the Roses, Long Ago;"' words by A. French, music by Harry Percy. It is a beautiful pieeo of music and can bo procured from the publishers, by en closing 40 cents. Pluvius has evidently been trying to get up a flood for the benefit of our lumbermen, and bis exertions hava beeu watched with interest by all con cerned. However the attempt has boon a failure so far, and it is some what doubtful whether we have a flood this fall. -Rev. Elliot has killed a few pig eons this fall, almost the only oues that have beeu bagged in this section siuce last fall. . If sma,l game of some sort doesn't get plenty here pretty soon, tho boys proposo to organize a party to go to where tho game 1a aud have a graud bunt. j We are sorry to have to report this morning that diphtheria has again made its appearance io our place; Artie, the second daughter of G. W. Robinson, having been attacked with it yesterday. Dr. Cobnrn was called, and this morning reports that the little girl is better, and is liable to recover. TEACHERS' EMINATIONS.
