Wo tako tho following account of tho lato fire at Elk City from yester day's Derrick: Elk City, July 13. Shortly after twelve o'clock Satur day uight the tank shop in tlio rear of Moss' tobacco store, on the north side of Main street, wn3 set on fire. An alarm was immediately sounded which called the residents of tho town and surrounding couutry to the scene of tho conflagration. The fire soon com municated with Moss' stove and then followed the street westward. II. StrnsV wholesale liquor store came next, after which tho barber shop of J. Davis was burned. D. (iottscha!k's hard waro store then fell and was fol lowed hv a vacant, huil.lin Jiol.-mamir J " o n to A. Webber, The drug store of Mr. "Webber was next burned. Tho hard ware store of W. W. Gibbs &Co. then fell in, followed by Hoffman's saloon. Coyle's furniture store then gave way to tho devouring elemant and the American Hotel, kept by Mr. Dou bles, was next cremated. A barber shop, saloon, Chinese laundry and an othtr saloon were burned in the order named. " The clearhoided men saw by this lime that the onlv hone of savin? tlio - - J l Q town lay in tearing down building?, leveled the building of Albert Owen, then Coyle's building occupied byUp degraff'8 grocery and last the hard ware store of D. M. Sample. Tho scene during the fire and tlio smouldering ruins visible Sunday af ternoon can better bo imagined than described. Most of the buildings w.ero two stories high and occupied by fami lies. The town has no water supply evcept a4ank which is drawn through the. streets daily. Buildings on the op posite side of the street were scorched but not burned. v A derrick was fired several limes. The men formed a bucket britrada and worked liard and O systematically. Tho Tyler Brothers . brought out their large team and aid ed in tearing down tho three buildings which saved ths houses remaining on that side of tho stree. Sherman, ri per, Garfner and others distinguished themselves by coolhcaded hard work. With the appliances at hand the boys did nobly. Had the wind been blow ing there would have been a general cremation. Tho losses and amounts insured for are as follows: G. V. Kenney, no insurance on his buildings. Moss' stock of tobacco nn J cigars Loss $750; insured for $300. Strauss loses stock of hardware Insured for 1,500. A. Webber's building and stock of irugs, valued at $3,500. It ii difficult to get a complete slate put of amount of insurance on the rued buildings, as a number of poli s r;ere canceled on tho Fourth. Adjustments for some of the losses wero made this afternoon. The DouLle Note Swindler. Among the hundred of trick? prac tised by the swindlers who travel about tho country selling implements and goods of various kinds, the dou ble nolo is perhaps tho mostsuceessful. For instance a peddler offers a farmer a number of implement?, a pianity of goods to sell on commission, and the latter signs what purports to be a sim ple receipt for the goods, but which is so worded that it can be cut into two parts, one-half being a genuine note of hand payable at a certain time, with out any profisa whatever. These notes are generally sold to some neighbor or broker, and the victim of tho swindle has no other rccourso but to pay and keep whatever he has of tho goods. Wo giva a specimen of tho way of drawing up these double notes. 2 u r- -t a -3 O "5 5"5 c-t c 3 U rn TO a 2 r o t-i o St cu o 'A 2 5. k Eh CD "-a o o w o S- S -i B i o 3 3 o n t 2 g h " V m p . o g n t a Of courso theso notes vary in word ing to suit different bargains and op eration?, but the general character is shown in the above, tho lino indica ting where they are cut, the left hand portion being a good negotiable note against Brown.
