Mr. Tlintnpnon whs h soldier in the laic Tvar, ami lost an una at the battle of Oet tysburg. Oar Washington Letter. Fpeoial lo the Ri:rtULiCAN. Washington, D. C, May 23, 77. Republicans will continue A tiirie , honored custom, and have little quar rels among tlieisel vcs. This is, after all, not au unprofitable thing to do. JJesides being a necessity in a part" of iutelligont men, it keeps tho members of tli8 party wide awnke, and whenev er the common enemy appears, he finda a compact oiganization ready to meet him. Just what condition the Demov crulic party is in now, is well stated by the St. Louis Republican, an able Democratic paper, as follows: "If Mr. Hayes's policy is to be what Secretory Kvarts i reported as favoring silver raouey, free ships, revenue tariff and Southern improvement ninety out of every hundred Democrats in the West and South want to see a Speaker in the Forty-fifth Congress who wiil or ganiza the House for the vigorous exe cution of that policy. If that is to be a Hayes democrat we are nearly all Hayes democrats out here." There are very few of the tradition al docilities of the Democratic party in that lut, but here is the rnpst influ ential Demo3ratic papur in tho West proposing to support ' a Republican Administration ou the strength of tteua. I have never been of those who believed the Republican squabble ov er the Southern policy of President Hayes would he en enduring one. "Whether the policy fails or succeeds . w shall iflll bo working together in a year or two. Neither, it tseeius to me, cau the Democratij party, as now or ganized and led, exist savo ns an op position party. It has no principles , which commend it above the Ilepnbli can party, to nny considerable section of the country much less to the whole country. The - Administration is making haste slowly in its appointments to ofliue, uud is now receiving and noting upon advice from all classes of Republicans, It is likely that important ofGces will be filled in the course of the comin eck, and that tho appointee-j will be satisfactory to the m:is of Republi cans. As it U no settled that tho l'rcbi dent intends to do no unlawful thinjr in order to keep the Army together during the cummer, nnd as maoy oiB cers of standiub have expressed their satisfaction with his course on the sub ject, it ought not to be too much to ask of our Democratic friends that they cease to clamor, in advance for his impeachment. It is gratifying to know, too, that the Administration will tako care to avoid such a uso of (he Army on the Rio Grande as would provoke a disturbance of our friendly relations wit!) Mexico, and that there is no ground for ssosational rumors that the army will be uiado the tool ef fillibusters by being ordered, at thib lime, to pursuo Mexican freebooters across the border. The change and extension of the re lations of Government to the people, brought ubout by the great expenses of the war, aud tho new method of taxation have enormously increased the cases in our Court in which tho Government has an intcml. A law yer of large practice, iu any considera ble city, will inevitably be called up on many time in a year to appear iu such cases', either for or against the Government. Mr. Kvarts bus repeat edly so appeared. Tartly owing to these facts, uud partly, perhaps, betboo of the exam le of his predec i will not on- rst.i.whatever prod ii, lifly or ,. We notice ns a matter well worth mentioning, that nt the recent great publishers .trade sale in New York, the books that were, most, in demand aud brought the best prices were Web ster's Dictionaries, from the famous Quarto lo the neat and handy pocket edition. This fact is a good indica tion of the almost universal populari ty (if these books, and of llit growing public demand for them. It indicates also a, fact of far greater importance, and that is the interest the people are taking in the study of their own lan guage. This is encouraging, ns there is no branch of education that is now and has been so much neglected as the common branches of yelling and defining. It is often astouishiag and grievous to sec how grossly ignorant are children and youth, aud even men and womeo, of the .orthography, pro nunciation and meaning of ordinary words and phrases. They cannot ex press their thoughts lor the want of words, and oltcn they express thoughts very different from what they intend, because they do not understand the words they employ. And very fre quently, from the same cause, they take ,in idea, or wrong ideas, from what they read or hoar. The remedy for theso evils is the proper training in the btudy of words, by the use of the Dictionary, and this training should begin as soon as the child can distinguish between one word and another, and 'continue indefinite ly. The apparatus fur this study should, of course, be the most com plete aud thorough to be had, and this is abundantly supplied in Webster's Dictionaries, which nre justly recogniz ed, wherever our langungo is spoken, as the standard authority in English. Parents and teachers can in no other way fco effectually or so cheaply pro mote the educational interests of their children, when of suitable nge, as by putting iu their hands any one of Webster's School Dictionaries, for dai ly uso in connection with the lmly of their lessons, aud by placiug ou the family ceuter table, or the teacher's desk as the authoritative guide and standard, -a copy of the Unabridged. The uuabridged contains 3,000 il lustrations, over 114,000 words in its vocabularies, and 10,000 words mid meanings not in any ether Dictiona ry ; the abridged editions comprise "The Primary," which has the, UryeU sale, and which ha9 some cnpitul rules for pel ling. "The Common School" is similar, but larger, with tables of synonyms, tc. "The High School," still fuller, with many useful tables; "The Academia" and '"Counting house" for advanced school and' for general home and business use. The latter has some fnecially valuable commercial and financial tables. The little "Pocket" edition, with its bright gilt edges and morocco binding, is truly an invaluable pocket compan ion. It contains more than 18,000 words, rules for spelling, many ab breviations, word and phrase.", pro verbs, etc., ordinarily met with in the Greek, Latin nnd Modern languages. Whether it is convenient or not to have copies of any of tho other books of the series, we certaioiy recommend that all should possess a copy of the Pocket, which, when not otherwise ob tainable, may bo had by mail, by in closiug 81.00 to the publishers, Mrsns.
