Mr. C'hns, lkmuor departs for Meadville to-day, to attend the cur rent term of Allegheny College, lib will be absent some three or four xncittlis. We did not smart much over the political situation during the real hot weather, but the Republicans propose to make it torrid from now till elec tion. Mr. O. W. Robinson and family departed on Monday morning last on n visit to relatives in Stoneboro, and Mercer. They expect to bo absent about a week. All ye who Blake jpur foot to music remember the Anniversary party at tho Lawrence House on next Fridajr evening, the 8th iust. Mc Cray's celebrated string band will furnish the music. ' While General McCtellan favors Tilden, he has at least the grace to say of Hayes ; "I liavo the highest re spect for the charucter and intelli gence of the Republican candidate for tho Presidency, aud believe him to be an upright gentleman." The well on John Thompson's farm, at Stewart's Run, was still going down, at last accounts. It was pro posed to put it down 950 feet, and we suppose it will not be finished for some days yet. Wo hope to have a good report of this well to publish riext week. Boys, it's all right to kill squir rels, but recollect, that no matter how good a shot you have at a pheasant, you had better let it walk off. It post a man $12.50 to kill ono near Meadville, a few days ago. It Is con trary to la iv to kill pheasants before the 1st of October. A prize fightconsisting of sixty two rounds was fought on the New Jersey fdioro opposite New Castle Del. on Thursday last, between two men named Wecdon and Walker. At tho conclusion of the fight, Walker was ins nsiUe, aud remained in that con dition until he died. Wecdon and his second are under arrest. It is to be Imped that this case will pit a stop to the barbarous practice of prize fighting- Ye Squirrel and ye Sporting Man. nY thk im of Tunns' mN. From this lime to the day of elec tion every Republican should consider himself a worker aud exert himself to the best of his ability. Only a few can shine on the stump, but all can have some influence in his social cir cle. If there is. a doubling neighbor go to him and incline him to support the right, place the true issue before him, show him that it is not a question of currency or tariff, or mere control of oifices, but one of vital importance tho futuro safety of tho Government itself. Keep this before the people and keep up tho quiet work that is all esseutial to success. Organize for this purpose, and perfect organization so effectually that each voter to do their duty. Samuel D. Irwin, Esq., who has been for several years, up to last full, County Surveyor of Forest, and - who, somo eight or nine years ago compiled a map of Forest County, which map is at present in use by all landholders of the County, has, at the solicitation of several parties Interested, prepared a new map of the County, of tho same size as the old one, containing over COO additional names, and will be ready for delivery immediately. Mr. Irwin's reputation in this direction is a suffi cient guarantee that the map will be accurate iu every particular. There is and has been, for some timo past an immense amount of petty thieving going on about town. The thieves seem to take to garden truck like a kitten to a hot brick. During Capt. Knox's absence, a few weeks ago, some person or persona dug and carried away about one-half his pota toes. Green corn, squashes, tomatoes, apples, and everything eatable, that can be gobbled up, is carried off. A little bird-shot iu the logs of two or hree of these thieves would perhaps put a stop to some of this raiding. It's worth a trial, anyway. The Musical Convention of Prof. Boynton, which was organized last evening, at the M. E. Church was well attended, and the Professor fuels greatly encouraged. He will continue tho sessions afternoon and evening the balance of this week, when he will have a vacation uutil about the 25th, when ho will resume, an i close up in that week with a graud concert. We can conscientiously recommend our musical friends to attend this conven tion, as the Prof, is .undoubtedly the best musical director iu Western Pa. It f;eis ihcso mornings and eve nings as if there had plight to bo seme more stoves up in the- huttae, but no man lives but dieuds the putting of them op, and fitting the stove-pipes. Tempers are sure to be tried, and not unfrequently wicked expressions are used. A poor wayfarer who had Leon tipping the flowing btnvl too frequent ly, fell over tho railing at the depot, yesterday, to tho ground, a distance of about six feet, alighting on his head and shoulders. lie was not hurt, but if he had been sober he either wouldn't have fallen, or else he would have broken his neck. An adopted cbild.a boy, of Mrs. Dorcas Walters, died of diplhcria on Monday evening last, and was buried on Tuesday." We understand that there are a number of cases of this disease around and near town. One of Mr. Tietsworth's children U down with it. Much uueasiness is felt in regard to the malady. Ex-Gov. Reck has just returned from a trip to Pittsburgh and Philadelphia, and while at the latter place, of course took in tho Ceutenuinl. He says the crowd is getting so large that there is hardly elbow-room there now. j Mr. John Jamieson, who is at present putting down a well on the Kating Farm, between Petersburg and Edenburg, spent the Sabbath at home Jaraieson's. He informs us that gotfd tool-dressers and drillers have no difficulty in procuring work about there at $4 a day. He is in good health.' A. B. Kelly, Esq., his daughter May, Mrs. Jf. II. Einstein's store building is to be enlarged by an addition of twenty feot on the rear thereof, and all thrown into one large store-room eighty-five feet in length. McFetridge, formerly of Oil City, now of Germantown, was in town on Saturday last, visiting Rev. Elliot and calling oa numerous friends. Rev. McFetridge when he was located at Oil City, occasionally favored us with a day's preaching, and was always listened to with interest. His health is improved since he located in Germantown.
