Beamish of Luzerne ; Assist ants II. A. Kettering of Westmore land, Win. Dewitt of Philadelphia, C. C., Durham of Montgomery, and P. Gaff of Delaware; Doorkeeper, E. 1-jJpnes of Allegheny; Assistants Mc- Gorgan oT Philadelphia, - J.-- -Ward t)f - Northampton, and F. Wolf of Colum bia; Doorkeeper, (Rotunda,') J. Cole man of Berks ; Messenger, T. Snyder of Blair; Assistants R. McKuight of Philadelphia, V. A. Swarsli of Cumberland, D. Wasson of Mifflin ; Sup't Fold Rooms, Zniting of Sohuyl kill ; Postmaster, F. Ferris of Bucks ; Assistant, J. K. Smith of Fayette. The Message of the Governor was read before both houses on Wednes . day. . - The following, which strikes home, is taken from the Oil City Weekly Timet : i The announcement that General .- Sheridan has been sent to the com- ' mand in the Department of the Gulf , seems to nave served to lire the South : ero neart, somewhat, Misnuan is a Democrat and a chivalric and geuer . ,U3 soldier, and it may seem difficult ' to understand why be is so bated at .. the South. It cannot be because he , Svas so successful against the confeder ate airuiej, for by the same token they . would hale Grant worse than they do - Sheridan. The stay-at-home rebels, . 'of course, hate all Luion soldiers and ".V; Union men. Notwithstanding the . most magnanimous forgiveness that any. insurrectionary people ever re - ceiveJ ; ieir voice is still for war. But the ex Confederate soldiers, the fight iug men of the South, arc different ilk, They were whipped and own it. and the others never came any where near hither. They who did the fighting ro iiui accept uiu resutl auu treat tbe victors with the same spirit displayed bv Graut and Sherman at tbe : close of hostilities. Perhaps much of -,. tbe incendiary writing and bad- blood ,' still displayed may be accounted for J by supposing them to have been the exhibition of those who are valiant with the pen or the midnight assas sin's bullet alone. - . But it is undeniable that Sheridan's - same is a red rag to nearly the whole population ot tlie Uult fetates ex soldiers as well as stay-at-homes. Tbe cause assigned for this f pocific dislike is that General Sheridan com manded in the department at die time when the reconstruction acta of G'ou- , ; gress went into effect and he aided so V zealously and successfully to carry out tuose to the letter that he became very odious. To show the feeling we quote the remarks of a New Orleans paper greeting the announcement that Sheri- . tiun was coming to few Orleans: Jf our people are determined to - avoid - a collision with the United Htates forces, as wo firm I v believe thev . are. Generals Einory or DeTrobriand, or lor the matter ot that any lieulen aut in command of a snuad would an- . 'wer just as well as tho redoubtable. Sheridan or the scalping or town burn lngTecunnch himself. Should they ever coino to the conclusion thiit their self-respect and manhood reiiuire them to ad'ipt a different course, 'uhich is seriously iremmible,m ftct that "Ten Miles -Away" Maiinchausen Sheridan is to bo their objective point, will nut make a particle of difference so fur as they aro concerned, and it may safely fid predicted taut in that case sutue body is just as likelv to be hurt on one side as upon the other." This, interpreted, means that they recognize tlio tact that it Sheridan takes command the luws will be rigor ously enforced and his orders carried out to the letter; which will result in resistance; as the "Whito 1 A'agijers" are as determined as Klicridan, some ono is likely to be. hurt and lie lias Iliir warning that it may Le Li side well as the other, if ho undertakes to enfoice law. Thero is no question but that any attempt to enforce the Inw3 strictly will result in a disturbance. There has been no time since the close of the rebellion thai the public sentiment of the South arrayed i'sclf on the sido of the Government and law And order. That we have not had more distur bances is owning to tho fact of the authorities letting the laws sleep, prac tically annulled, and not to the hearty acquiescence of the people in the laws. And when they turn on Sheridan as they do they simply express their hatred of the las of which ho was but the faithful agent. The odiuai they visit on him is due to Congress and the Presideut and back of them the nation for they made th laws and ordered their execution. So that the whole import of their outcry against Sheridan which now fills the South is that they repudiate the laws and will not tolerate their enforcement. A corrPsnnndnnt. tvriitnn ft-....
