A C'lttCAMO UA.I11 OF POKKR. The most famous game of draw po ker on record was played in Chicago in 1839. The players were Charles H. Farwell and Hugh Maher. It seeems that Messrs. Farwell and Malier did not play a cash game. Experts in the great national gums assure us that it is impossible to play poker properly unless the ninuey is put up every tune, and it is altogether owing to the neglect of these players to con form to this commendable usage that they have "been involved in litigation which' promises to be lidious, irritating and unprofitable. At the end of the gam between Mr. Farwell and Mr. Maher it may have been a series of games, bu(, the principle is the same Mr. Maher found himself owing a con siderable sum $1,700. we believe to his opponent. According to his story, he ottered to settle soon afterward, but he says that Farwell raised him a thousand, or in tther words that he claimed (1,000 more than was really due him. The matter was arranged by a- transfer to Farwell of eighty acres of land belonging to Mnher.wlio says that this transfer was made as security for the payment of the claim pendiug an adjustment of the dispute as to the amount actually due, with the understanding that Farwell eliould reconvey it back when the two could come to an agreement upon the amount of the debt, and when the money should be pioduced to liquidate, it. Since then the land has increased greatly in value, being worth now about $100,000; and one Vlny Maher was greatly surprised to learn that a portiou of it bad been sold and refold, whereupon he filed a bill in court for the purpose of securing a reconvey ance. This occurred long ago. I Since then nothing has been heard of this case, so interesting to the poker' play lug community, until ft few days ago, when application was made fur a rule of court requiring tbo opposing coun sel to file certain documents forthwith, to that they might be examined by the attorneys of persons holding lots under title derived from Farwell. It is said that a great mass of deposi tions and other testimony has been collected, and that some of this evi dence contains information of great value in regard to the mysteries of draw poker as played in Chicago. The fall is again hero, and dull days and chilly nights warn us that winter is not far away. Before its advent let every preparation be made to meet it, for at best it is a disagreeable season for the farmer. Of all the causes that combine to make it so, none are so po tent as one thing mud. Through perhaps five months of the year mud is a necessity, but the faimer has it in his power to obviate its evils to a great extent. Before the fall rains come on, let the lanes be ditched and graveled, and good board, stone or gravel walks constructed, from house to road, fron house to barn, from house to well or spring, and, iu short, along every fre quented walk or drive, on or about the premises. See that they are well made high and dry so that the wife, or daughter can pass from place to place without sinking in .mud up to the shoe-tops. No one can estimate the amount of sickness, the doctors' bills, or death, the direct result of wet feet from this cause. See to it that the sickness or deal b of a member aT your family be not laid at your door. Your own health and comfort, as well as that of your horses that are com pelled to draw heavy loada through muddy lanes, demand that you make these improvements. Suppose they do involve labor and a little expense? The pleasure of passing along these dry paths and drives when the mud at each side is knee-deep is sufficient com pensation, to say nothing about facili ty, health or comfort. It has often occurred to us that far mers should unite iu the construction of foot-paths along the roadside, so that the village, the postoffice, the school or church could be reached on foot without wet feet. This could be dqne at little expense, comparatively, and then what a world of annoyanee, trouble.exposure and discomfort would be prevented! who can tell how many lives would be saved annually 1Okfo farmer. Connecticut has a marksman who gave an exhibition of hit skill at a fair recently. He used an improved target-rifle, requiring neither car tridge, powder'nor air, a percussion cap alone, sending a large shot single Ii with force sufficient to penetrate a pine board at some distance. He etuck a pin in a board tweutv five feet distant, took his rifle m one band, pis tol fashion, and knocked the pin duwn, He then stuck his kuife iu the bourn, at the satne distance, and split several shots in snccesaion, wh;Ie ho rang the iiiigei-ueii nine times out oi ten. "My dear sir," said a candidate, ac costing a stray wag on the day of elec tion, "I am very glad to see you.' "You needn t be, replied the wag, ' I have voted. A Memphis policeman thought 'that his orders included all cases of drunk enness, and, therefore, arrested the Mayor and was discharged.
