(Sec. 27, Purdon's Digest, page 994. Tionesta, Forest County Fa., thi 1st day or April, A. V. 1874. ' FRED. GLASSNTER, Treaaurar. WHEAT (iKPWING C4 NEBRASKA. This State is uow attracting conaid- ernhle atteotjon a one of the b-st fields for settlement in the Union. climate and toil it meets the conditions required tor the successful cultivation of all the productions of the temperate zuue, aud aleo some ot the sub-tropi-' cal, It is not often that corn and wheat thrive equ illy well in any country) but as it is in Nebraska, corn is the first staple crop, of course; butsotoou as the farmer is well settled upon the land, he puts in wheat. The wheat of Nebraska is in goud favor ; and in r- t. Louis and Chicago markets its prioe averaged several cents per bushel more than tbe wheat of the neighboring State can command. In bread mak ing qualities the wheat of Nebraska only ranks second to that of Califor- . nia, with which it does not come into competition. - The agricultural triumphs which Lave been achieved in Nebraska are the work of little more than ten years, and as tbe country is settled, and the por tion of the farmer becomes eaoier, wheat ranks hither a-nonr the crops of the country. In 18G0, when the. pop ulation was 24.000 the wluat crop amounted to 147 867 bushels, orahout 6i bushels per head ; aud in lOV'G, when the imputation was 122,000, t'.-j wheat crop was 2,125.0 bushels, ora liule utiikr 174 bushels per head. The population of 1873 can ctily be estimated, aud therefore it is best r.ol given; hut the wheat croD of that year, (which wat ao unfavorable agri cultural year,) amounted to 3,000,t.'0) bushels. The record is therefore rtiil one of advancement fur the youn' Bute; aud it is to be remembered that stock raiding, fruit culture, corn grow ing, aud all other agricultural moi advances equally with wheat ' raining. Nebraska is therefore a promixin State for the settler; and the tnoru es pecially since it has good tnarkeU hot', east aud wt-t aud south. A member of the Ohio legslaUira r cently visited the State peuitt-niury, and while there, had his hair tut l y the prisou barber. While undeigniii the tonsorial process a party of iit'i.Y and gentlemen visitors looked iu, and the legislator was made happy hv catchiug such remarks ai : "Ugly Ku.k about tho eyes," -'Vicious mouth," "Looks capable of any wickedness," "Wonder what he did," etc. A New England preacher say : "The morals of thp city of Washington are so corrupt that they create a stench, tbe odor of which causes the wsu in the moon to bold bis nose." 19 18 32 830 98 60 30 60 I i ii-v.
