BBCCATtrtNA VIKVV. '. In the February number cf the School Journal there is an iwtorest'njj matter-of-fact artiela entitled, "Schools and Public Morale," winch embodies a great di?a4 of truth in but few words. No one who reflects doubt the excel lence oou r public school system. Copied from the best recognised systems of the different nations of Europe, it comDinea about all that it good in them. It is the power in Ilia bind destined to perpetuate civil liberty, ns ererjr lecturer and politician who" ad vocates the system will say; yet this writer teils us with truth, emphatical ly, that "prosperity depends more on good morals than on anything else in our world." Here is a Geld for the philosopher, nud probably a ubjcct for the legislator, text for the minis ter and a memento for the instructor. It shows that moral philosophy id not to bo left exclusively to be studied ns n technical abstract science, but to be taught in the beginning of life by pre cept and example at our schools! Apropos of this subject, I saw late ly in an article on popular education, the statement of an old and experi enced teacher, who said that he never Offended parents by tolling them their children, progressed well though some what unruly and immoral; they ap peared rather pleased than otherwise, seeing nothing but the progress, and regarding the misbehavior or niiscon , duct merely as trifling iudicrctiou, or youthful sowing of wild oats. On the other babd, parents are not unfrequent !" ly dissatisfied with the teacher who expresses any doubt of the capabili ' ties of their children, notwithstanding they may give them an excellent mor al character. V This affords solution in part of the subject, yet it only ( "shifts the difficulty without removing . it." The parent then has more to do with the moral character of youth than the instructor. If the parent teach the child that intelligence and learning are the only weapons with which tD fight the battles of life, aad that morals are merely a collateral circumstance of easy acquirement in the future, so easily obtained they can be "picked off any bush" when wauted, just so long will public morals be bankrupt, notwithstanding the boasted merit of our school system. Now there is nothing new in all the above. It has long been a recognized fact that there is au education of the heart as well as an education of the Bead. Both should go together, as both are necessary. That one does V Hot ef necessity include the' other is human experience, and the testimony cf the writers of all antiquity. Pope had this idea in view when he wrote, "Ti phrase absurd to call a villain great. Who wickadly is wiw, or madly brave, I but the more a foot the more a knave; Who noble ends l.y noble means attaint, Or falling amiles in exile ns in chains. Ukajood A u ml I us lethiin reign or blecj, , Like Socrates, that man is great indeed. Tientsta, Pa. - e. i. I. A bellow cylinder will bear a great er strain than a solid one. Many ' of us know by experiment what a hard pressure an egg will resist when placed endwise between the hands. This . curious strength in a ronnd but week substance is due to the exact, oiderly arrangement of their particles, t. e., in perfect curves. A memnriable illus tration was seen in the mock artillery set to play guard in front of that crea tion of imperial whim the ice palace of Catharine f Russia. Before the palace stood six cannons of ice, and ' two mortars formed cast pieces. The ... eanuons were six-pounders, which are eoraraonly loaded with three pounds ef powder; these, however, with a quarter of a pound, and carried a . ball of stuffed hemp, and sometimes of . iron. The balls, at a distance of sixty paces, passed through a board two inches of thickuess ; the ice of the can nons could not have been more thau three or fuur inches in thickness, and ,yet. it resisted the force of the explosion. A strong minded woman mado the following gentle reply to a politician who called at her house, to get her . husband to go to the polls and vote: "No, air, he can't go. He's washing to-day and be'" going to iron to-morrow, and if he wasan't doing anything 't he couldn't go. ' I run this 'ere house, I do, and if any one votes it'll be this same Alary Jane." . . , , ' A Chicago paper says "the little State of Delaware has the honor of growing about all the peanuts that are grown in the Uuited States." If all the peanuts Georgia produces in a ' "ingle year were poured into Delaware, ' they would blot out the State as effect v ually as Pompeii was blotted out by the ashes of Vesuvius, i r The average Burlington (IowaY sa , loon-keeper must be bad indeed. A learned divine in that city recently t addressed one of them as follows : -Wretched man ! If the bed of that riv ' er was bank high with suds of salva tion, and a June rise of pudy com ;mlng down from tha mountain, there . wouldn't bo enough to wash your feet." A compokitor out, west the other day turned out an account of a wed ding headed, "Making ofSanr Kraut," when it should have wen ''Marriage . of Gen. Kautz." When the editor saw . the article bo burst a pateut swear-gauge. A little thrto-year old of this place uked bar papa, the other day, if they "make Cod Liver oil at a livery stable?" ud if "they learo to speak at epole factory?"
