Tionesta, Forest Conntv I'a., tnia 1st day of April, A. D. 1874. " ' ' f FRED. GLASSNER, Treasurer: ; jt i .-L rs F1.AX CILTITATION IN NEflRAtHK A.' It was once supposed " that flax woti!d only thrive on the : ea ihore ; and hi.'uce Hollnnd had what may be regarded as a great wonopoly in the growth of flax, mid the mamifucture of linens. But (lie plant flourishes in Nebraska; and the soil is too rich for even this exhuuStitiij crop easily to af fect it. The cultivation of the crop is therefore yeaily' euoreasing at pres ent with n view to the oil expressed from the Peed, though (us there is uow no linen manufacture worthy of the name in the State,) it may he ultimate ly to provido fibre for the mills. Certaiuly the people of Nebraska may look to this conclusion; and settlers in the State ought not to forget that flux may be made a profitable crop. . At a recent meeting of the Farmers' Association, of Lancaster County, held at Lincoln, (the county seat and cjmUul of the State,), a discussion took pTjce on the probabilities of a flax crop for this year, and it was stated that soma eastern gentleman hud offer ed to build an oil mill if the fanners would guarantee a sufficient quantity of the raw matcriul. Tho correspon dent who sends this item of informa tion in thciutercsts of farmers moving west, says that iu Ohio, the flax crop used to be a most profitable one. -Half a bushel of seed to the acre would broduce froia 10 to 20 bushel, worth $1,50 per bushel. Taking the yield at 10 bushels, the seed was worth f 15.00 per acre; aud allowing 88. 00 per acre for expeuses, (which includ ed the delivery of the seed to the mill,) the net profit to the farmer was $7.00 per acre. The straw also was worth 86.00 per acre; and the yield was half a ton to the acre. Nebraska is mora suitable for flax cultivation than Ohio ; and farmers who migrate to this prom ising State, where the land is virgin, rich aud cheap, may wisely keep this subject in view. They say that Brooklyn has a Po liceman who has been on the force for nine years and yet never made an ar rest, never found any lost property, and never was culled up as a witness. He is kept on the force, it is presumed, because it may bo said of him that he is a man who poHe'ses the rare, merit of attending strictly to his own bust uess. i A little girl was not at all grateful for a pair of boots to which she took a great dislike. After enumerating their many faults, she added, "Aud they don't even squeak." A Kentucky lady compromised a $20,000 breach of proiuiie suit by ac ceptiog 8j aud a new rhiirnoii, v' 41-1
