A correspondent of the Philadelphia Pre, writing from Slatington, T., says: The slate business is rather brisker than usual this season, especial ly here at Slatington, the chief slate quarrying, mining and manufacturing district in the country. Here aro lo cated the quarries and works of the American, the Lehigh, the Girard, the Riverside, the Franklin, II. , Williams und other companies, all of which are in a prosperous condition. The slate formation of this region tho quality of slato being of various grades of hardness peculiarly adapts it for the various purposes for which sluto is used. The larger veins are of the best roofing slate material in the coun try, while the smaller veins, of a softer nature, are not so well adapted for roofing purposes, and are used for man tels, blackboards, school slate, etc. The paving slate, manufactured from tho large veins here found, is superior to that of any other locality, both in quality and appearance. Much en terprise is here manifested among the slate men, and the different companies nre engaged iu extending their works in order to accommodate the extensive trade which tho business hero has es tablished. Toe Americrn Slate Com pany is increasing its capital to $400, 000, for the purpose of enlarging its already extensive works, and fur build ing a large number of houses to ac commodate its laborers. Tlu3 great quarrying and mining district is high ly favored with railroad and water transportation facilities, nearly all the large companies haviug branches laid on their premises from tho main road. Slatington is the terminus of the Berks County Railroad, which is an exten sion of Wilmington and Reading Rail road, thus enabling operators here to fchip directly south. One James Goldsmith a brake- man on tho gravel tram which Btops here, met with an accident on Sunday which will render him a cripple the rest of his days. The accident hap pened near Oil City, and we take the following particulars from the Derrick of Monday: About l o clock be was assisting n turning a table on which was an en gine, when hit) foot was caught beween the end of tbo moving rail and the end of the stationary rail, and the skin torn on the upper and under side between the great toe and thatf next to it. Iho muscles were ground to i pulpy niasa, and Drs. Davis and Da vinney decided ou the amputation of the foot. The unfortunate man was fitiffering terrible ocony. Chloroform was administered, and the end of the foot taken of' a short distance behind tho toes, by sawing through the two outsido metatarsal bones ulid unjoiut iug the three middle ones. lie was comparatively easy after the operation. Throughout his trying ordeal lie bore lurnselt manlully. Im mediately upon the occurrence of the accident a locomotive had been des patched fcr his wife. She arrived about the time of the completion of the operation, which took place in au upper room of the Taylor House, but was not allowed to enter his room mi til it was set to rights, and the suffer er's foot was bandaged and under the cover. He had requested that she should be told that his foot had been "pinched," and showed much less dia- tress thau she. After the foot was off he inquired of the doctors how h should be able to kick anybody with that foot, and wanted to know if there was anybody present who could tell jam where lie could get a band organ We learn from the Tid iou te Jaur- mil that a cooper shop, belonging to Economy Oil Company, was struck by lightning on Friday morning last, and together with several adjoining sheds totally destroyed by fire. Tho flames played around au oil tank standing near fur soiuo time, but were finally Mothered with blanket.?. Tho Titusville Cbwrt'crMys : Last Wednesday morning a man was found drowned in tha Allegheny river, about a mile below Warren. His body was floating in an eddy. From tho ap pearance of the body it would appear that he had not lain leng in the water, and the indications were that he must have been violently treated. The affair is considerably involved in mys tery. It is thought from a letter found in one of tho pockets of the decayed that his name was John Seheonv. Mr. Jno. W. Stoner, of Salem township, the tallest man in Clarion enmity, called in company with' Dr. Weaver to see us on Monday. He stands six feet seven inches in his stockings. He left his measure in the Democrat office and any one disputing his right to the championship for length can call and be measured. Wa keep a ladder for that purpose. Dem ocrat. Xew Advertisement.
