RDITOK. Wf;nESD,lT MORMXG, MAY 7, 13. DECORATION DAY. Heati.iiiarters Grand Army of the Re public, Department of Pennsylva nia, N. 1408 Chestnut 8t. Gener al Ordew, JIo. 37. Philadklpaia, April 23J, 1873. in accordance with mir Itnlcs aril Regulation, Friday, May SOlli, wi.t te observed aa a Memorial Day ' fur the purpose of strewing with flow ers, or otherwise Itacnrating the (Graves of Comrades wliodied in de-it-nce of their country during the late Rebellion, or whi) have since p.t-seil ttwar. Citizens generally, Military ami Civic Associations, Cliurclies and Sunday-School (should bo invited to participate, and in places where there are no Posts of Grand Army, it is hoped that the Citizens ill join to gether for this purpose, that filling services may be held in every Church yard r Cemetery where aur dead he roes sleep. The manner of conducting these service is optional with lWa, but those desiring it, can obtain copies of the form of ceremonies, as furnished last year by making immediate ap plication to the A. A. G. Attention is especially invited at taw time to the recoiDiucndatioii from National Headquarters last year, ' that flowers and shrubs bo planted at each grave, in order that when we are gone, the seasons, iu their cease less round, may in our stead, adorn too Iepiug places of our Comrades. By order of II. B. Beath, Commanding Department. A considerable number of the leading physiuiaos of New York city have signed a petition to the S'.at'e Legislature, praying for the passage of a law suppressing the traffic in in toxicating liquors. Petitions bearing some forty thousand signatures have also been forwarded, protesting agaiust the exemption of beer from the restraints of the existing laws reg (dating the sale of intoxicating driuks. There is little doubt that the times re quire a new and fuller presentation of the wrongs of intemperance, as also a ruore rigorous enforcmcut of existing penalties against drunkenness iu pub lic. It may be questioned, however, whether legal enactments will ever do more than secure a partial remedy against this curse of luodern society. Prohibitory license laws will do some thing toward checking a traffic 'that sometimes seems to regard neither the condition nor the interest of the buyer, but it ia to be feared they sometimes, also, augment the evil they strive to remove. A law has recently been tuacted in Franco which provides a sliding scale of punishment both for the inebriate and I ttio man who sells t him. The law does not propose to prohibit drinking, but rather to ter reriio the drunkard and those who supply him at improper times. A aim ilar law is canvassed in Great Britian. Why not adopt the plan here? The virtue of temperance, however, like all other virtues, must proceed, pri marily, from the uiind and conscience. Commercial. - W learn of a case of sharp prac tice which occurred in Pittsburgh a few davs since, the victim baiiicr Mr. Jas. Davis, of Kidgway, formerly of Youngsville. Mr. Davie "went down the river" on a raft, and was paid for the trip. He had fifty-five dollars in his pocket and was passing along the side-walk cf Pittsburgh, when lie was accoiUd by a mau who professed to know him. During the conversation a third party put in an appearance, aud presented a bill to the man "who knew Davis," purporting to be for shipping goods to llidgway. The man had no money with him it was in the hands of his wife at the hotel wauld go down after it sixty dol lars. Third partv was in a hurry was going ou tho train couldn't wait. Then said the man "who kneiv Davis": "Let mo have sixty dollars to pay this fellow, and go with me to the hotel where I will pet it ard pay you." Davi3 said ho had but fifty live dollars. The man with tho hill aid he would trust Davis' friend for the five dollais ho could seud it iroiu Ridgway. Davis gave the mon y, and went with lis friend toward the hotel ; but before reaching it his triend hart occasion to step in aud speak te a man. He has not been seen since by Davis and never will be. His money went where the woodbine twincth, aud ho wen left without a dollar to get himself home with. Da vis will not be caught agaia in that way, but some other man will who don't happen to tee this article, or one of a bimilar nature. Warren Ledger. George Drake, who wo noticed a few weeks ago, as having escaped from tho constable of Putneyvillc, Armstrong county, met a terrible death by jumping from a train in ra pid motion, on the A. V. R. R. on Tuesday the 22d inst., near Kellcy's Station. He was being arrested - by sheriff Black, when some of the roughs, who he was in company with, struck the sheriff a blow in the face that sent him reeling to the floor, when Drake made for the car door and jumped from the train before he ctiuld be interrupted. In jumping from the train, lie ftrin-k the bank and fell back against the car, which struck him on the head killing him i nsta n tly . llelh lehem Prett: Drake is well known to many of our citizens, having been employed as a stacc driver and teamster in tbia place for a considerable length of tune, and was considered a dangerous character.
