On the previous day Cecil Rhode, who w-aa at that place, declared that be was as cafe there as be would be in bis bouse in Piccadilly. It seems that tbe Boers have desired the capture of this man more than the poxeHion of the city. Tbey destroyed tbe railroad south of the town, and an nounced that when the town was taken they would carry Iihodea in a cage to Bloenifontcin and Pretoria. Rhode organized a troop of rough riJera, and ("ilonel Kekewicb, the com mander, declared that the garrison would be able to bold out until relieved. The bombardment of tbe town has been almost incessant, a'-d several skirmishes have occurred, but the defense haa never slackened. On October 23 the garrison made a brilliant uigbt sortie, routing about 7;) lloere and capturing t-o guns. After this the besieging force was largely iuereaned, and the Boers erected forts and bejran belling tbe toa-n. It is a significant fact that nobody thought it worth while to mentiou that the gold reserve in the treasury in tit pa -a few weeks was going downward, and that it had dropped more tbau M'Ju below its previous bigh-wa-Ht mark. It is now on the increase again, but the cercuinstance attracts no a'teution. The reserve was so much higher, tveu when at its recent lowest, than it was until the past year ? two, and the certainty is so strong that the gold standard bill will pass and the Re publican party remain in control of the ciuutry that uolody troubles himself to glaucs at treasury statements. All the gold which will be needed to meet the Government's requirements will le in th? treasury so long as the Republi can arty remains in charge of the Government and, happily, Republican tenure of power for a long time in the future se mi certain.
