Harrisburg, Feb. 6. In view of the
recent revelatioas in Pittsburg It aa
ten the occfion of much comment
that William Fllnn, the bo of the
political machine of that city, should
be again brought to the front as the
western leader of the Republican In
surgent forces. It was assumed by
many that Flinn would "take to the
woods," or tt least maintain a discreet
silence for a while. The story of the
disgraceful exhibition in which he fig
ured, in the wholesale discharges of
competent clerks from official positions
!n Pittsburg to make room for poli
ticians whose appointments' would
strengthen his machine, was read with
feelings of disgust by many. Flinn
started out to pack these offices with
his henchmen and seerned to disregard
entirely tne many years of faithful
services of those whose official decapi
tations he demanded. The fact that
the discharged men were Republicans
this full.
The ti Jay case is scheduled to come
bsfore the Senate to-day. A number of
Senators are billed f irsp:-c!ies both for

HEALTHY STATE FINANCES.
The work of the accounting officers
of the commonwealth can best be
shon-n in the fact that during the

has been taken In during that month
in the past ten years, when $723,533.22

This enormous increase, of course,
is due in part to the prosperous condl

is due to the zeal and diligence of the

The .State of Kentucky is iu a state of
uproar aud confusion, if not abiolule an

test there. It w ill be remembered that
W. S. Taylor, the Republican candidate
for Governor, bad a plurality on the face
of the returns, and was declared elected.
He took the oath of oiUce and assumed
the duties of Governor. Senator William
Goebel, the Democratic nominee, contest

returning board declared him to have
been elected.
Ou the frame day, just before the decis

way to the Senate Chamber, Goebel was
shot by an unknowu assassin and fatally
wounded. The ball passed through bis
body, entering just below the armpit on
the right side and passing through the
right lung. Governor Taylor dissolved
the Legislature, alleging a state of insur
rection, but the Democratic members met
at a hotel, received tiie report of the re

elected. The oatu of office was shortly
afterwards administered to Goebel, who
was in the throes of death.
