Three quarters of an hour before this Dr. Hume had announced that his pa tient was steadily sinking, and at 6 30 be had left the dying man's bedside at the request of Arthur Goebel and Mrs. Brau uaker, a brother and sister, who wanted to be alone with him when the end came. It w ill be remembered that W. S. Taylor, the Republican candidate for Governor, bad a plurality on the face of the returns, and was declared elected. He took the oath of oiUce and assumed the duties of Governor. Senator William Goebel, the Democratic nominee, contest ed, and Tuesday a week the Democratic returning board declared him to have been elected. Ou the frame day, just before the decis ion wa rendered, w hile passing on his way to the Senate Chamber, Goebel was shot by an unknowu assassin and fatally wounded. The ball passed through bis body, entering just below the armpit on the right side and passing through the right lung. Governor Taylor dissolved the Legislature, alleging a state of insur rection, but the Democratic members met at a hotel, received tiie report of the re turning board, and declared Goebel elected. The oatu of office was shortly afterwards administered to Goebel, who was in the throes of death. Har land Whiltaker, a farmer from But ler county, the home county of Governor Taylor, is now in jail at Louisville charg ed with the crime of shooting Goebel, but with no direct evidence against him.
