How the ili'i-ni'l onld lul'er from the article in tho D.-.m-H-ritt tlai tho Court was incidentally criticized 1 am at a loss to know. Tne Somerset It inacrnt, a paper pul listied at Somerset, and whicn reported the evidence as it fell from tho lips of the witnesses, must have criticized inci dentally tne Court if my article contains such a cri.icisin. The Son:' rset IHurral in its issue of Dcceiuiier oil, ls., said, i'cr ui, "VVheu the awml words 'Guilty of murder in the first degree fell lrom the lips of the jurymen the prisoners turned paid, but gave no turtner evidence of emotion. During this scene not a sound was heard in the courtroom, save that made by the Clerk of the Court when polling the jury and the response made by tlie jurymen. Tne larco crowd pres ent hardly seemed to breathe during the solemn prM-wdiug, and, alier court was declared adjourned, those, iu tlio court room passed out m silence, it was, in truth, a solemn aud impressive scene, and gave those present a new idea of the awfuliiess, as well as the majesty, of the law." It further Bays, in tho Jackson case: "When ilie words 'not jjuiity' fell lrom the lips ol the jurymen, and as soon us the largo amitotic present heard the verdict ot' acquittal, it loudly applauded and exclamations of approval were heard on all sities, but llieso iiiauilesUtions were quickly quelled by Judgo Louge liecker." Tho llsralil should have taken um brage with its contemporary ttin Somcr set j,;.vtcrnt. It ilare not. No criticism, direct or incidental, was iiitendtsl lor the Court. I consider Judge Longeueckur oiio of the most impartial men silling on the Bench in this Commonwealth, and entertain for him the warmest aud iiigti est esteem. Lawyer Martin, as tho Ihvnhl calls him, d-ies not Hunk of btsinjr t(,H interest he has in tho Roddy Uys. He is still of the opinion that they w ere unjustly con victed, aud that they are. not the ri;!it men ; but, as 1 have said lief. ire, they are MMr and without means, and, lor infor mation to the llrrtiitl, I wish to say there are thousands ol good-thinking people in Johnstown and Cambria, county who be lieve as the writer due and who will at the proper time snow their feelings. The editor of tho Hi-ruld says I had better turn my attention to other matters which I am more familiar with, or some people may look uihui mo ns a 'hush lawyer." Let me say to him, Cambria county has no bush lawyers. Somerset may have had. Tho editor ol the Ui-ynld was admitted to the Bar of Somerset ; ho afterward Iss-ame an editor. It is now time he g'ws to raising spinach. In the I'ltinrNK ot Saturday last you printed a clipping from the Somerset ,S'ii H'I'irti, which thinks the writer not competent to jmljie; and further, that hn is too hrighl for Johiistow n, ami suv-gi-sts that ho join the Dazzier Cotnpanv lh' next time it comes to t!i city. It may lie that myself and thousands of others are in error of j -idgmeut in t Ins matter, but until tin: gum u tn R'hl.lys is more clearly proven, m o preier to err on the side of mercy. As for myself", 1 would rather be a star j iu the Dazzler Company tu.-tn to h ive my I heart calloused with an uiitdiristian fis-i-ing. I ssk tlie .' -.'.' and '-,i.(rd to do me til? j:!tice to pubiish I liis io their papers. i . P. .M vitn.v. J'ti.iix'f 'n, Jnii. I I, IS.I7. The Hkkai.h 1: is in disposition tor nter into a controversy with liwyer .".iartln in regard to the merits if th-- trial of the utifortunate Roddy boys, cmnieted of murder in the first degree, but w hen Law yer Martin says he u "htlli ol the opinion that they (tho R-,ddy hoys) wrro unjustly omvii-ted," ha not only criti.-ises the Court, whose duty it is to see that all d' fendrnits re giveu fair and impartial tri als, but he casts a retleclion on the twelve "g-Hd men ami true" who were solemnly sworn to reuder a verdi-t in accordance with the c idence. If tho character of our courts and juries is to be impeached by an indifferent attor ney, who makes up his mind from read ing the reports of testimony as printed in a weekly newspaper as to the guilt or in nocence of defendants on trial for a capi tal crime, then trial by jury had betur be abolished. The liiiitALD, iu common with the law abiding people of Somerset county, will cheerfully aid the Roddy boys in estab lishing their innoct nee, if they arc inno cent ; otherwise, it prefers to see tho law of the Commonwealth strictly enforced. For the information of Lawyer Martin we desire to say that th writer never read law, but, on tho other hand, is a common every-day country editor with an eyo jealous of tho integrity of tho courts and juries of his county and Slate; and he would rather leave thequostiou of the guilt or innocence of alleged mur derers to them rather than with bump tious young Iwirristers who seek to gain notoriety by comhi to their defense afu r they have leen f.iirly tried and convicted. With assurances of our distinguished consideration, we again suggest that Law yer M mill confine himself to matters w ith which ho is moro familiar. Meanwhile the convicted Roddy boys will have eveiy attention shown them to w hich they ure e ilitlud under the law. Mt, Zlonah Kurisnrisgi. G. W. Showman, of Join, -town. Tho jury was out atxmt two hours. William Hess, the prosecutor, swore bat the defendant unmercifully whipped his eight-year-old son over a month ago, but did not produce any witnesses to prove that tho boy received more than he deserved. Miss Batt took the stand and acknowl edged that she did whip the boy pretty hard on account of his incorrigibility. A number of witnesses sworo that there bad been "lad blood" between Hess and his father-in-law aud the defendant, and that they believed the suit was brought with the intention of "getting even." Tho costs In the case amounted to about 52S, and three-fourths of them m-ra placed upon the prosecutor. Rev. J. F.
