It was not until Saturday night that the four candidates agreed to submit the question to Chairman Elkin. The conference will meet at Johnstown on Monday, the ltth inst. A Cheap Take. Not less than five hundred people were hoodw inked Monday afternoon by a fake bicycle race. At least that uumber of people paid gate money to enter the Gen tlemen's Driving Park, where Paul Wer ner, of Summit township, aud Charles II. Young, of Meyersdale, were adver tised to run a two-mile bicycle race for the championship of Somerset county aud a purse of $M, each of the principals having deptisited fl(J iu the hands of J. J. Berkebile, of Meyersdale, Werner and Young were lioth early on the eround. each accompanied by a host of admirers. The Werner men appeared to lie in the majority aud made a liberal show of money, but were able to obtain only a few side bets. It was manifest long licfore two o'clock, the hour set for the race, that Young would not "go," his friends commencing a vigorous "kick' as soon as they reached the track. Their objection seemed to lie centered on Mr. Leonard, one of the three judges agreed upon to decide the contest. Finally, Let mard retired from the stand and Mr. Iteeter, of Meyersdale, took his place. Even this did not satisfy Young's friends whose sand had all trickled out of their boots. As a last resort, the judges or dered the riders to be ready in five min utes. Werner jumred lightly on his wheel, which was held under the w ire by several of his friends. Young's wheel was also under the wire, but Young was not on it, nor did h) mount. The word was given, and Werner pedaled four times around the track, wbeu he was de clared the winner. Werner is clearly en tilled to the purse, and stakeholder Ber kebile should lose no time in handing it over to him. All side beta were declared off. A more disgusted crowd was never seen in the county than was the one at tracted by this fake. According to the articles of agreement under w hich the ra was to 1 run, each principal was to select one judge, and the two thus chtuseu were two agree upon a third. Young selected C. P. Hellley, of Somerset ; Werner selected Ed. Iouard, of Meyersdale, and they selected Charles F. I'hl, Jr., of Somerset. Young's friends insisted that Leonard had money up on the result, and was therefore debarred from acting as judgt While the jangling waa going on in regard to Iieonard's right to act. Young mounted his wheel and rode around the track four times, thus completing two miles. After he had ac complished this feat, some of his support ers claimed that the race was over, inas much as Weruer had failed to score at the appointed hour, "J o'clock. Young madp his two miles w ithout the knowledge of the judges and without having received the word. AYerner and Young, with their trainers, have lieen in Somerset for the past two or three weeks preparing for the roe, A three-mile race between Milt inn, of Meyersdale, Charley Miller, of Sum mit Mills, and Edward Friedline, of Som erset, was won by .inn In a canter. Selecting a Cares r. "Next to the matter of selecting a wife which in the majority of cases is little more than a leap in the dark the most important problem which a young man has to confront is that of deciding upon his trade, business or profession," writes Rev. Charles II. Parkhurst, D. D.t in Ladies' Home Journal. Almost any young man's decision as to w hat he is going to do w ill mean the narrow ing of his preparation, whereas all success that is fairly worthy of the name means breadth of preparation. A man needs to get a great mass of foundation under bun if be is going to put either a high or wide structure on the top of it, and if he knows too soon exactly what It is he is goiug to do that mass of fouudatiou will not be forthcoming. In ail cases where it is possible it is a great deal better for a man to get the knowledge first and then let that decide what the vocation shall be than to decide the vocation first and let that determine what sort of know ledge he shall accumulate. Hainan is in earnest to do the tHt that is in him, it will lie much to his ad vantage to get over the feeling that there js any hurry about actually settling down to his work. It is a great deal wiser to ijrift aud to do almost anything that of ten as temporary arrangement than to wake op one's mind filially and" irro trievably to an employment that may possibly be a misfit and that will involve therefor a oortain amount of failure. We can safely depend upon it that in the ease of a man w ho has a strenuous pur pose there is a certain gravitating tenden cy between birn and the work be ia beat fitted to do, and if that gravitating ten dency is not hurried too much it will as sert itself, and the man without any ex. cessively painful searching of the heart, will find himself where he belongs. Along this line the only safe decisions are the decisions that shape themselves and that we settle into without being very distinctly conscious at any time that a conclusion is being reached." m m Among Some of the Fairest Scenes On this continent and in the tropics, ma laria poisons the atmosphere with its pes tilential breath, sowing the seeds of dis ease and death in every direction. It is in such localities that the preventive and remedial qualities of Iloestetter's Stomach Bitters are most conspicuously shown. For every form of malaria it is a signal ly efficacious remedy, anfj conquers disorder of the stomach, liver and bowels, remedies inactivity of the kidneys, and counteracts the weakness and lack of etaniina w hich Invite dlsea by level ling the barrier w hich a vigorous opera tion of the digestive and secretive organs opposes to iu No defensive medicine in use has stronger commendations in pro fessional quarters both for purity and remedial qualities. Bennioa of Pennsylvania olnsteers, Somerset, Fa. For this occasion the B. t O. R, R. will sell round trip tickets to Somerset from Pittsburg, Johnstown, Cumlierland and all intermediate ticket stations for s!l trains September l&h and 17th, valid lor return passage until September Buh. at one lowest first-clasa fare for the round trip.
