Savage, of Itostou, preached an unusual Ka--tcr sermon on Sunday saving ; It is by no means a fact, as is com monly supposed, that Master Itegan to lie celebrated alter Christ was lorn, after His supposed resurrection and ascension and th;d this day has been confined ex clusively to the history of the church as setting forth its lieliof in this great hope of a future life. K.tster is older than Christianity. It is older than any his toric form of religion with which we are aualuled. It funis its spring and source deep down in the heart of man. and' therefore with i.ll its flowers, with all its faith and inspiration, it belongs not to any church, not to any race, not to any religion, it belongs to man. The word Kaster, as no doubt you are aware, is simply an anglacized form ofthe uaiuo of an ancient Teutonic goddess, the ibsidess of Spring ; and, although the name occurs once in the Xe Testament, it is there by a curious anachronism, for it was unheard of in the church until hundreds of years after the New Testament wan written, known ami long familiar in ho church when the Hible was translated. It was put there to stand for the Greek because it was the popular word that waa familiar to tho people." Remarkable Springs. On the summit of a hill in central Potter county are four springs so near together that a person may carry water in the hollow of his hand from any one of them aud drop some of it into the other three. In c.no of these springs the Allegheny Itiver has Iu source. Another is tho fountain of the Genesee Itiver. In a third the sinnemauoning nrancii 01 me Susquehanna rises and flows west and south to tho main stream. The fourth spring sends forth the Pine Creek branch of the .Susquehanna river, which Hows cast and south to the main stream. Thus waters starting on a Northern Pennsyl vania hill, within a stone's throw of one another, separate at last so widely that those from one spring have their outlet in the Gulf of Mexico, those from another mingle with the tide in the Gnlf of St. Lawrence, while those from tho other two unite again In the Chesapeake Bay. It is doubtful if there is another such w atershed on this continent as that Penn sylvania upland. To Give it a Fair Trial. Dr. C. X. Sehaffer, State Kuiertendeiit of the Public Schools, is busy devising means for the enforcement of the new compulsory education law, which will take effect at the beginning of the next school term. A school census is now being taken by the school Assessors in everr county in the State to ascertain the number of children of school age in Pennsylvania, and the number not now attending school. In a recent interview Superintendent Sehaffer said that ths day for arguing whether the compulsory law is a good one or not had gone by. It is now simply a question whether the law as passed by tho ICgislature can or shall be enforced. If the law is a bad one, he says the best means to secure its repeal will bo to en force it any way. If it cannot be enforced be intends to find out the rea son why. P r haps the mere attempt to enforce it will bring to light the causes that now keep children out of school. Over K) people have joined the strange sect and the interest is increasing. Meetings are lieing held uightly iu a big (arm house. The preachers call themselves "sancti fied ilesh-ealers," and say they are proof against xiison. At a meeting Friday night oue preacher, named "Ked" Shcare er, brought forth a lox containing four or five snakes. He allowed the reptiles to wind around his neck and then bit sev eral pieces of tlesh out of thain. These delicious morsels he placed on a plate and passed them among the congregation, bidding bis fhx-k to eat the morsel and be saved. Twenty-five people, including six or seven w omen, olieyed his mandate. At the close of the sermons the people gather around the altar and embrace and kiss each other.
