At this time Coiighenhoiir was utterly exhausted and his lower limbs w ere in such condition that he could only proceed very slowly and painfully, lb fised shelter at the house where he asked it, he made his way slowly and painfully along, finally seeing a light in the h 'Jso of F.li Shockey, where this old veteran of two wars took him in and kindly cared for him. This is rcMiled by tha fat tint Mr. Cotighenhour, with Iiotli feet amputated as a result ot tho terrible experiences of that night, was last week carried to a train and taken to Johnstown. Sold and guaranteed by J. B. IIOU'ERBACM, S'-m?rsct. Pa- The Confluence Bridge. From tlw Vnlontown Xew-StanrtarJ. S piire Biitler and T. Show, of Henry Clay township, were in town Tjes.lay iu search of information concerning the pro ' posed bridge over the Yough river at Conll.ieiice. They are of the opinion ! that the bridge should Is) built imtnedi ' ately and claim this view is held by ail residents in the vicinity of Confluence, lj.it h on th" Fayette and Somerset sides. It now appears that Somerset county is so anxious t have the bridge built that they are willing to concede the disputed point alxmt the ortion of tlio work bi 1st performe.1 by each county. They first maintained that the statutes prevented them from building farther than the county line w hich is near tho Somerset county side at Confluenie, and at the meeting of the two lioards of commis sioners at Confluence to consider the mat ter the Somerset commissioners held that they could not build more than the abut ment on their side of tho river. The Fay ette commissioners, unwilling to enter into any such arrangement, decided to let the matter drop. The matter was car ried into the courts ofSnnersct ciun'y and it was finally agreed that Somerset county oul.l build half the bridge. Spiire Butler ami Mr. Show say tho court of that county lias made an or.b-r directing that tha coimiiNsioiiers build their share of the bridge as s-in its an ar rangement can lie made with Fayette county. Tiie ipiostion of tha construction of the bridge passed the courts of lioth counties several years ago. The petitions were presented and the grand juries and courts passed favorably upon them. Somerset refused to build more than the abutment and tho matter was dropped. Several times since attempts have beon made lo revive the question but n.ithiiig wa d'ne In-yond the action of the oiirt.s until this year when Somorsct county ordered tho commissioners to proceed w ith the con struction of the bridge. The residents on both sides of toe riv er think the Fayette commissioners should proceed with their part of the work and Squire Butler and Mr. Show came over to Bee w hat was going to be done. They consulted attorneys as to the law on the subject. They think the com miioners should lie compelled to act, but the attorneys cannot find anything in the law to compel them to do so. The commissioner are w illing to at but they claim they ran do nothing until the matter gin's through the courts again. Tho old petition w hich was favorably act ed njM.n several years ago is of i;o force liecause the site for tlio bridge has lieen changed. The residents on the Fayette county side of the river will prepare a petition w Inch w ill be presented to the Juno grand jury and if approved the court will appoint viewers. They can get their reixirt ready for tlio Scptemiicr court, S. F. Sholier, comity commissioner, and Attorney J. i. Ogle were over from Som erset yesterday in consultation with the county commissioners on the Continence bridge matter. They examined the court records but failed to lind an or !er of court instructing the commissioners to build the bridge. They finally agreed that the liest plan to Ik pursued is that adopted by the Fayette commissioners of a lit -w view. Somersi-t county will likely adopt this iiir-ilmd of solving the problem. It is altogether likely that petitions w ill ! presented to the isiurts .if both counties in June. Ecnarict Xoral. The S uiiersct Normal School will be opened on or jii-out May-J'Hii. Secretary Morton's next annual report, it is state.!, w ii! set out in detail and with names facts in a transaction which w ill make interesting reading. Suue wsks ago Mr. Morton wrote to the purchasing agent of the seed division of tho depart ment, informing him that memiiers f congress had been charged with disp.ising of their seeds in a way other than was contemplated by law, and instructing him to either verify or dispute these charges in the most substantial way. In lwss than a week the agent brought to the secretary the written order of a mem!erofthe house of representatives for his entire quota of sihsIs, w hich he projMistsl to sell to the department's agent forfTo. The purchase was directed to be made ami instead of cash, the agent gave his check, w hich was properly en dorsed by the vender, and the money w as withdraw n from the ltnk. So it happens that Secretary Morton now lias the seeds issued to this ineniU-r, turned over on his written order, and also the check through w hich the money was paid and bearing the signature of the numlier who sold the seeds. The department official decline to mention the name of the con gressman now or to locate him, but the assurance is given that the whole trans-a.-tion, names and all, will appear in the report as a striking example of the evil to which the secretary has no frequently called the attention of congress. The full quota of seeds furnished a luemlierof congress by the department cmsists on an average f I,4aJ packages of flour seeds l i.O'o of vegetable and Kl quarts of field seeds, grasses etc. The total cost ot this quota to the depart ment is iK't ween fJlil and f24o. The de partment in this transaction got the whole lot lack for $7.". The secretary is making an effort to abolish the free dis tribution of seels entirely for the reason that it has grown into an evil that was never contemplated wheu the original law was enacted. The Pittsburg Cnmm-rcinf of Thursday siys: "An electric railway from Fitts bargto Johnstown is the hist project of the Sci-oiid-avrnue Traction Company. Tiie contract for its -instruction has al ready lieen let, and work will legin in about one montii. "The road to Carnegie, an extension of the West Fiiil system, controlled by the same Company, is another move oflhe Secoii I-avenuc Company. This line w ill lie completed by tho middle of May, The same contractors who nris building it will build tiie road to Johnstown. Work w ill legin on the Johnstown extension as soon as the contractor gets the Cr.rncgie line olf his hands. It is to le completed and ready for operation by Noveiidier 1st. "The Brxddock and Turtle Creek line is at present a single track. Preparations arc now under way to double track it, and the new line will have two tracks its en tire length. The extension will begin at Tartle Creek, twelve miles from this city. It w ill pass through Brinton, Wilmer ling. Walls, Jeannette, Irwin, Oroeiis barg, L-itrolie, Ninevah, Sang Hollow, Cambria, and all towns made famous by the Johnstown Flood. Nearly its entire length it will parallel the tracks oflhe Pennsylvania ICailroa.L . "All the rights of way have lieen secur ed and every obstacle to its constnn-ticn removed. The grades to lie encountered are all right, and by cutting across the country in several p!acj, the distan-.t between this city and Johnstown w ill bo materially shortened. Tho r.iadis-d is to lie sis-o'id to none, only the iiet of ma terial is to be used iu its construction, and as rapid time will bo made ls,-tw een tho Smoky and Flood Citi's as the Pennsyl vania Itailfa I furnishes. The rolling stock will be in keeping w ith the rest of the equipment. "When the road is completed passen gers from Johnstown and all way points will lie able to ride down into tho heart of this city at about one-third the present rates. "Work will lsgiu alx.ut the middle of May. All necessary surveys ha-.e lieen made and all that is retarding the project now is the completion of the Carnegie and McKeesirt lines." Wheat Yield of the World. Advance figures olitained from the bulletin of the statistician of the Agri cultural department for, March seem to indicate that the argument so frequent ly made that the price of w heat is con stantly falling, in the face of the fact that there has lieen no increase in the amount of wheat raised, is erroneous These figures, which have lieen obtained from the most reliable, sources show a steady increase in the wheat supply of the world during the past four years. The annual yield has lieen as follows: lsiH,o,:rro,.,iiO bushels; IstJ, 2,41 1.us-,-(IU; ls-i j, o 4J7,r.H; ls.n, 2, 5 J,t J,0J.. Notwithstanding the increase ltwecn the years 1SU and IstH, the Uuited States finds itself with a shorter supply on hand March I, IM then ever ln-fore. This is explained to lie due to the fact that wheat has entered so largely into the food sup ply of animals ow ing to tho shorlago iu other crops By virtue of this consump tion of wheat, hitherto mikiiow-u in this country to any appreciable extent, there is less surplus to carry over than ever liefore.
