Want More Light A petition, addressed to the Burgess nnd Town Council praying for the erec tion of an arc light at the corner of Patri ot and Main Cross street, is Is-ing circu lated and generally signed this week. No point in town stands more Imdly in need of light than the one mentioned. More ooplc travel up and down the streets at that M)int than at almost any other in town. The pavements are not in as good c unlit ion as they should lie and the steep grade to the east and south help to make the corner dark and dangerous. The Disciple and Methodist churches occupy two of the corners, w hile the Evangelical and United Brethren churches are only a short distance removed ou Patriot street and the attendants upon all four houses would be ls-nelitted by placing a light at the jsiint indicated. Au arc light at this place would also tend to break up the gang who make that corner a rendezvous and defile the fronts of the building and the payements. Town Council should grant the prayer of the jetitioner with out unne, essary delay. Crni hed ty Falling Coal. At Pittsburg, WeJnesdiy, Juti3 Wil liams rendered an opinion reversing the Berks county court and granting Rev. Augustus Krecker and others an injunc tion against Itev. Jones II. hirey and oihura. 'I tie um; was a dispute forcliurch property, growing out of the celebrated split iu the EvangeUi-al Association, at the time that Bish ps Dubs, Ksher and Bowman were misieiidnd from their of fices. The court reviews the case and finds that the la.-l conference at Indian- aolis was the legitimate ruling jiowcr of the church, and that tho Eastern Penn sylvania Conference was an illegally con stituted and rebellious body. The prop erty in question is the Iiiuiiauuel Church at Reading. The court rules on eveu points regarding the trouble as follows: First, that the General Conference of ltl was the regular successor of that of 1X7 ; second, that the alleged General Conference that met in Philadelphia in In il was an unauthorized body and its as sumption of ecclesiiLsth-al authority was an act of rebellion ; third, that those con ferences, congregations and church nicui Isjrs that adhere to tho General Confer ence constitute the Evangelical Associa tion ; fourth, that those who adhere to the Philadelphia Conference are an independ ent and hostile association"; fifth, the prop erty which prior to lwtl Is-longod to the Evangelical Association, now belongs to that body; sixth, the assignment of the plaintiff, Krecker, to the pastorate of the Immanuel Church, having Imxmi made by a provisional body, gave him no title ca pable of enforcement, but his sulmequent ratification by the General Conference gave him title under the law of the church and therefore, under tho law of the land ; seventh, the assignment of the defendant, Shirey, to the same pastorate by an ille gally organized conference of East Penn sylvania, has no title capable of enforce ment under the law of the land against the Evangelical Association or it adherents. The decree of the lower court is revers ed and an injunction is ordered to restrain the defendants from exercising control over Immanuel Church and from exclud ing the plaintilf from the pulpit of the church. The rusts are also plaits 1 uimiii the defendants. This decision it is claimed settles tho ownership of 210 churches in Pennsylva nia, THR CHURCH IS PIVIIIKP. Holiierbai-m, Somerset, Pa. Ferioni Should Think. Someliody said once that "the only thing that walk back from the tomb with the mourner and refuses to lm bur ied is character." A few wts-ks ago a newspaper said many of the people of the town in which it is published are do ing all that is in their power to render it impossible for the editor to write them a decent obituary notice. There is food for thought in both these sentences. A man ought to strive after a good character, one which will remain with hi children af ter ho has gone, one of which they will be proud. And he ought to think some times of the preacher who will conduct hi funeral service and tho newspacr man who w ill write his obituary notice and make their task as easy as possible, A it is, these useful meinlK-rs of ms-iety find themselves often driven to the ex tremity of embarrassment by tho neces sity of saying something that will soot ho the anguish of surviving relatives while it docs not prevent the truth. Men and women should Is3 thoughtful enough to conduct themselves so as to deserve a good obituary sendoff. In that event the conscience of the preacher and tho re porter will not trouble them.
