THE "PUMPING SYSTEM "
SUSTAINED.
Resutt of the Republican Primary
in Somerset Borough.
The Republican primary election held
Saturday, for tbe purpose of nominating
candidates for borough officers, was an un
usually interesting one, the vote polled lie
ing much larger than the Republican vote
cast at the Ian Presidential election.
The ''water question" was the issue.
A successor to Mayor Weifley and Coun
cilmen Granger and Werner were to be
Dominated. The retiring officers named
were all candidates for re election and were
warmly supported by those who Tavor the
plan, at present adored by the borough
auttiorities, of attempting to procure a water
supply for the borou 'i by meant of the
''pumping system "
Those opposed to the present plan, and
designated by their oppoocnts "the cor
poraiiotiUts," or "anti-water people," had
for tneir candidates Caut. Wm. H Sanner and
Esquire LaRtte M. IIicka, twoof the most rep
Qtaole cittztus of tbe borough, property
holders, and well-known Republicans.
For Burgess, the "Oid Man," the present
incumbent, William U. Weldey, was pitted
against A. C. Holbert, Esq. Ths balance of
the ticket cut no figure in tbe C jht as ail in
terest centred on the candidates who would
have a aay on the "water question." al
though there were a number of candidates
for Tax Collector, 3rhooi D.rscwrs, and sev
eral of the other offices.
The contest thro ig'jout wasamjst spirit
ed one. Almost every "water man" among
the Republicans put in a "full day" Satur
day and workel zealoua'y for the success of
the "water ticket The large majority of the
"antis" contented themselves by voting their
sentiments on tbe question and left the brnul
of the battle to be b jrn by a few of the more
earnest ones. They put up a goo.! fi.ht,
in fact a remarkably good one, but tbe odds
were against them to such a d-gree that
their opponents elected their ticket by a nice
majority.
While the contest was spirited, it was good
Datund and the day passed off without the
semblanceof a quarrel or wrangle between
the opposing factions.
Mayor We.lley carried the day by a ma
jority of fitty nine votes, out of a poll of a
tittle less than three hundred. He has al
ready served his fifteenth t-ermas Mayor and
was re nonrnated Saturday for a three-years
term, ail of which demonstiaves the fact
that the " Oid Man" has a pretty t ght grip
on the Repubii-.-an voters of the borouh.
Counciiinaa Granger had a majority of
thirty-seven over Captain Sanner, his oppo
nent who received ths highest vo, and
Councilman Werner was jost eight Votes be
hind his Cotiuciimanic running mite.
Tbe result was announced ah mt half past
10 o'cloi k Saturday n grit and was received
with enthusiastic cheers by the friends of
the winners. Tbe band was brought out
and a strenale was tendeted to stveral
prominent citizens, who, it was thought, no
doubt, ha! contributed largiiy to the success
if Ihe victors.
It gj-s withoul saying that the ticket
nominated will be elected ot the third
Tin-slay in February.

Crtainly no town withit a radius of loo

advantages as a sum jier homo than does
this place and au e.'Ijrt should be made to
get the locating coaaintttee of the Masonic
fraternity of Allegheny county to select
S unerset for a sumuer resoit.
The Pittsburgh Timrs ssys that it is certain
that the project a summer resort exclusive
ly for Masons will take deS jite f jrua dur
ing the coining summer, at lea'.t to the ex
tent o a joint stock organizuion, chartered
under the laws of Pennsylvania, if indeed a
start in the build ng lias is not m lie.
The locating committee has two limita
tions p'.aoed on its work fi - the site
chosen must be not over 100 i : les away
from Pittsburg, second, it must be within
three hours' rideof that city. The;-e limita
tions make it almost certain that tha site,
chosen will be on the line of the Pennsyl
vania or llailimoreand Ohio roads.
As soon as a site is selected it is proposed
to organize a chartered company with Ski
members at the start. This will give a paid
up capital of i .J,iAi, with which the land
will be purchased and a start made towards
building a hotel aud an assembly ball.
Eventually it is believed that the.e will be
not less that 5J0 stockholders. In the two
cities of Pituburg and Allegheny there are
about 30 Masonic Blue lodges; in the county
outsid of ihe two cities there are about half
as many more. At a low tstimate there are
1 1 ,'J Blue lodge Masons in Allegheny
county, and at an tq ially low estimate Conu
of these are heads of families, and robably
one-quarter of these may be considered as
prospective patrons of the summer resort
not all of iheui as regulars, it is irue, but as
transients eople who wouid go to the big
hotel in the mountaius for a recreation siell
or two, of 10 days or two weeks, during the
heated terms.
Tae idea is to scu- a trtt of land that
will perm.t of the erection of 2i or 300 cot
Uges, to be owned by members who would
make their homes there during the sum
mers. While the prtini'y idea of the movement
is the esaoiishment of a summer resort for
Masons and their families, there is behind
it ail another important project and that is
the fstaolishraent of a home for aged and
helpless members of the fraternity. There
is a magnificent institution of ibis char.ter

The Chicago Itier lctan, that great Repub
lican rewspaper, has not suiTered by the re
cent era cf financial depression but has gone
right along adding to iis foundation stones
a large and substantial circulation with a
stride that under Ihe circumstances is truly
wonderful. At one time additions to the
subscription list were coming at the rate of
SeO to l.loo per day for tbe daily issue, and
as high as 1,500 per day for the Weekly
Inttr (Men. . ,
The result of this is to place it easily at
the head of the list of great Chicago news
papers. It is certainly a good, clean, family
newspaper of the highest order.
