Special term of Court convened at 10 o'clock Monday morning. His Honor, A. V. Barker, of Cambria county, is presiding in the absence of Ju'le Longenecker. The first case on the calendar and taken op for trial ia the famous rjclment suit of Wm. H. Ruppel, Esq. vs. Edmund Uolsapple. A big sum of money ia involved and the case is being fought by tbe ablest attorneys at tbe bar Early thisyear Mr. Ruppel enter ed into a contract with Uolsapple for !be coal rights of a Dnuiber of tracts of land in Paint township, aggregating about 1100 acrea. Mr. Ruppel claims that be complied with tbe condition of the contract and that Holsap p!e failed to deliver a deed. Mr. Ruppel at occe brought aa action cf ejectment. Meanwhile both parties have disposed ol the lands in dispute. Ex Mayor Rose, of Johnstown, ex Judge Paer, William H. Koonti and John H. Ubl represent the defendant, Messrs. Kooser and CofJrolb are for tbe plaintiff. Tbe trial of the case it being watched with great in terest by attorneys. George F. Baer, Esj , the prominent Read ing lawyer, was in tan county for several days last week, looking after the interests of the Keystone Coal Co.. of which he was re cently made president, and visiting relatives. In speaking of tbe recent purchases of large tracts of Somerset county coal lands by eastern capitalists, Mr Bier ssid that be did not tbiDk the purchases were made for the immediate development, but rather lor permanent investment. The production of biium-Doas coal in rt g oos closer to tide wa ter than Somerset is still too great to permit of profiiable mining here to a great extent, "Bat," said Mr. Baer, "the cist of mining in tbe Clearfield, Huntingdon, George's Cre-k and other regions is Increasing and will in theeourseof tbe next twenty year become so expeo.tive as to make extensive mining in Somerset county profitable." Mr. Baer thinks that both the Pennsylvania acd Beeeb Creek railroaj ejmpinies are inter ested in the parchaM of Somerset county coal lands and that they are looking ahead for the future. It ia more than likely that both of those roads will extend their line into thia county In the course of a fo w years. Long Terms In tl- Pn. Crise Cramer's barn in Lincoln town ship, was destroyed by fire about 9 o'clock Monday night, A large lot of farming im plements, bay and grain stored in tbe barn were also consumed by tbe flames. Tbe loss will reach about $1,300. Mr. Criseand his family, who live in tbe farm bouse close by, had retired for tbe nigbt but bad not fallen asleep when tbey observed the bright glare of the flames from tbe burning building. Before they could reach tbe barn tbe fire had gained such headway as to be beyond control. Tbe fi e started in the shed at tbe side of tbe bain and was evidently the work of incendiaries. Robbers in Bedford County. One week ao Saturday night three robbers entered tbe home of tbe venerable Jacob Thomas, near Schellsburg, Bedford County, and stole a small sum of money and a re volver. Mr. and Mrs. Thomas son was not at bome at tbe time, and tbe door through hich tbey entered was unlocked in order that he could enter without arousing them. When they entered Mr. Thomas was fast asleep, but his Wiftj was awake. At first she thought it was her son, but when tbe light from a bull's eye lantern was thrown in ber face, she was convinced that it was not him The big fellow stood at ber bedside with a large club in bis hand and threatened to beat ber life out if she awakeaed ber bus band. After the other two parties bad ran sacked the entire bouse they ieft and are un known. Before they left the premises they broke into tbe spring-house and drank a lot of milk and carried away bread and butter. Six weeks ago last Saturday James Blcngh, a lad about thirteen years of age. met with a severe accident at tbe bome of bia sister, Mrs Joseph Sala, near Davidavi lie, from tbe result of which be has since died. He was helping to make cider at a place where an old-fashioned tumbling abaft pow er was osed to grind the apples. In stepping over tbe tumbler his clothes caught on tbe knuckles, and he was at once crushed to the ground. He was carried around and around with tbe revolving shaft for a number of time before the momentum of the power was stopped, and when be was released he was in an insensible condition. It was found that, in addition to' other bad bruises, his left leg was broken near tbe thigh. Tbe fracture was a very ugly one, as the bone protruded through tbe fl-sh, and, it ia tbe opinion of tbe doctor that it prodded into tbe ground every time the shaft went round. Dr. Peter Swank, of Davidsvllle, was called and dressed bis Injuries. The lad got along all right and ten days 80 was able to sit up in bed. His leg could be moved somewhat, and there was every in dication that he was on tbe way to rapid re covery. On Monday of last week, however, his leg began to pain him, and be became much worse. In a very short time tbe member became much swollen and very painful. Something iu the nature of blood poisoning set in and be continued to grow worse until be died. Tbe boy was a son of A. The United States Government officials have been at work recently and have located a large number of speakeasies in AHcjbeuy county and two moonshine establishments in Fayette county. The movement began at Culpepper, Va., where a Urge number of moonshiners were arrested in a general raid. The arrests have been kept secret by the Government. The agents sent out by tha moonshiners were colored men. Tbey circu lated throughout Fayette and Allegheny oucties and secured jobs at various trades to avoid suspicion They then ma J arrange ments with liquor dealers for the sale of moonshine liquor. All the dealers, it is claimed, who agreed to buy tbe illegally distilled liquor sent old whisky barrels, on which they failed to destroy the revenue stamps, to Culpepper. The barrels were filled by tbe moonshiners and returned to the dealers. In this way the Government officers were thrown off the track. Revenue officers have been kept busy examining saloon-keepers in Allegheny and Fayette counties and several prominent liquor dealers in Brail lock and McKeesport bave been arrested. Government officials have also located two moonshine distiller ei in Kaye'te countv, one iu Springfield township, oa the Middle Fork, and the other iu Sittiirz t wu4)ip, on tin tar m of a man who is a relative of the notorious Bill Pritts. It is not to be expected however that the officers v all locate w.ly old Pritts. He appears to have defied tbe cunning of de tective and Sheriff's posses too long to ever be captured, and if reports are to be believed he is at present engaged in the manufacture of "moonshine'' in tbe wilds of Mi ldiecreek township. Luke Dennigan, well known to tbe rail road men of the Pittsburg 4. vision of the B. A O , died at tbe home of his son, J. J. Den nigan, at Bennett station, Allegheny coun ty, Sunday. Dennigau's mind was weak and he starved himself to death for fear he would be poisoned. His peculiar ballucina tion was tbe result of mental troubles brought on by an old wound in tbe head which be received when struck by an engine while be was removing a huge rock which threatened to wreck tbe oncoming train. About six years ago this fail lenoign was employed aa a trackwalker on the Balti more it Ohio railroad at Oaiopyle. One daik nigbt while tramping his lonely round he discovered a bugs boulder on tbe track, brought there by a landslide. In a few min utes he saw the headlight of an engine burn ing ita way through the darkness and beard the sound of a heavy freight as it bore down upon him. He gave the signal to stop an d although the engineer reversed his engine he was unable to stop iu time. Dennigan see ing the imminent danger seized tbe rock and with ginnt strength lifted it into the air. As be did so the engine struck him and hurled him and tbe great boulder into tbe ditch. When the trainmen got the train stopped and came back tbey found Dennigan with a horrible gash in the temple. From tbat day Dennigan bas suffered from mental aberration. Oa dark rainy eights he would go out aud sleep on the damp ground. Lately Dennigan ' faacies took a religious turn, be always having been a devout Catholic, and be made his prayer book bis constant companion. Never would be allow it to be taken from bim, and last winter when the snow was knee deep he would go out and kneel down and go over his prayers, and then lie d jwn at full length in the snow and refuse to be disturbed for hours at a time. Daring the last few months he lived in fear of being p isjneJ and would eat nothing but the food prepared by his own bands About two weeks ao he refus ed to eat any food and died from starvation. For some years past, David Seager, a latter day lest ber stocking, has lived alone at a wild spot in tbe mountain four miles from Ligonier. Seager was 70 years old, as sim ple as a child in matters cf worldly knowl edge, but learned in all the lore of the wil derness and cunning to a marvelous degree in the arts that made bim a successful trap per and hunter. Of late years, in addition to his trade ia pelts derived from trapping in the moan tains and along the valley waterways, be has made a livelihood by breeding skunks for their skins. Tbe old man's skunk farm was one of the curiosities of his section, a source of much pride, and, perhaps, more profit than a stable of racers is to tbe aver age sportsman of the turf. Last Friday tbe old reciuse was in Ligo nier, hearty and in his usual good spirit. Weduesday night be was found dead in his lonely cabin. There are no particulars as to the circumstances attending the discovery of tbe dead body, but it is known that there are such mysterious features of the case as will warrant a thorough investigation. Although living the life of a semi-hermit, old "Lsvy" Seager has many warm friends about Ligo nier who will probe the matter to the bot tom. The announcement of his diatii will be bad news to a multitude of sportsmen in Western Pennsylvania, among whom the old man bad a wide acquaintance. It is thought that his manner of life, re mote from any human habitation, together with tbe notion tbat be might have a little money boarded about tbe place, may have tempted some wandering vagabond to put the old man out of the way for the purpose of robbery. a . Editob Hzbald: My attention has been called to an article in your last fosue under tbe caption "Com ing Events Cast Tbeir Shadow," etc., in which it was made to appear that tbe mem bers of the Evangelical Association at Red- dick, 111 , were restrained by aa order of Court from dedicating tbeir new house of worship. From a letter writen by Bishop Dubs, published in tbe Evangelical, of Nov. 13th mat., I learn tbat Ihe cburcb was dedicat ed by him and in the presence of a large con gregation. The injunction gotten out by tbe Ksberites was to restrain the congre gatioo from using tbe name "German," when in point of fact the congregai ion bad adopted tbe name "Emanuel Church" at least six months before. Tbe injunction was evident! r secure 1 merely to worry tbe members of the church, but it proved inef fective. , X. 44 In time of peace pre.iare f r war."
