In a remaikahly short time all of tbe people who bad been in attendance at tbe ch arches found their way into tbe streets. The streets were fi led with heavy clouds of smoke, strongly im prrgnated with an odor of burning wood. but in the absence of even a gust of wind was impossible to tell from what source the smoke proceeded or where the fire was lo cated. Tbe crowds of people were soon directed by the cries of others to tbe west quarter of tbe town where the houses of Miss L irie Ank ecy, on fnion street, were found enveloped in flames. Tbe fire had made such progress that it was beyond control before any person reached the scene and nothing could be done toward saving tbe building. Close by the burning building is the cot tage farm houe of Gen A H. Coffrolh. and a lew rod in the rear of it Mr. CoiTruth's handsome barn stands. Tbe attention of tbe people was directed towards preventing tbe flames from communicating to these build ings and tbe fiie in the An ken y buildings was permitted to burn itself out, Tbe buildings destroyed were a saitll one and ooe half story slab house and a small one story building communicating with it but not under ths same roof. Neither of the buildings bave been occupied for several months and tbe origin of the fire mast have been the work of incsndiaries. No persons were seen about the boiiies Sunday and no one was seen running from them before the fire was discovered. It is said that a party of young men bave been in the habit of en tering the buildings since Miss Anksny's ab sence for the purpose of playing cards, and it is not impassible that tbey are respiaii bie for tbe fire. Tbe ca-ses of Christian Smith against the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad company and Jeremiah Liston against the same company were appealed on the same points of law. They involved the questions of the defend ant's orjrllgeDce and the plaintiff s contribu tory negligence. The plaintiff sustained In juries at a railroad crossing at Ursine and claimed that tbe train was ruunirg at a reckless and dangerously high rate of speed and that a public crossing was thus ap proached and ittasedover without warning and that the company carelessly aad negli gently placed box cars in such a position that tbe plaintiff could not stop, to look and listen at the proper plaee. The many friends of genial Fred Iarr, of Pocahontas, Greenville township, will re joice to learn that he has come into another fortune from the Fatherland. Mr. Darrbas already received two legacies from relatives who died in Germany a-d a short lime ago he was apprised of the fact that an elder brother had died intestate and that he was one of the heirs to a considerable estate in lands and ready cash. Ooe day last week Mr. Djrr, accompanied by bis attorney .John R. Mr. Durr does not know tbe amount of the fortuae that is due him, but his advices are to tbe effect that it ia sufficient to make him independent the remainder of bis days. Twenty-six years ago Mr. Purr left his lather's borne in Germany and took passage for New Yoik. Weyaoi s eertifi-tie of nomt nation was filed ia the otnoe ot tbe county commissioners on the 9,h of October, liJo" Oa the 10th of October, it being ascer tained that he bad failed to file bis certifi cate wuh the secretary of lbs common wealth, in aoomUuce with Sac. 5 of the act of Juue 10, l:M,'i, ot-jsctions were lodged with couuiy cooimisiioaers against tbe ceriidcate fiied witu tae.u, aad praying thai ibe Court saould hear iu parties aid djterniins Ihe eifec thereof agreeably to Section C of toe act. ft ben the matter was brought to our attention a rule up ja tha rejpaleut was issued, returnable October 71, in response to tiich Weyant appeared in persoa on tbe return day and filed his answer. Ia this be admitted the facts substantially as alleged in the objections, but contended that filing bis certificate of nomination with the coun ty commissioners, as he bad doae, was a compliance with ths act of assembly and therefore entitled him to a place oa tbs offi cial ballot. No defect ia the form of his certificate is alleged. The tingle question presented for our determination is, whether the certificate of nomination of a candidate for the office af associate judge is comprehended in the first class enumerated iu Section 3, and so required to be placed on file with the secreta ry of tbe commonwealth 33 days prior to tbe election ; or in tbe sjcond class and therefore to be filed with ths county coaimissioaers t davs before the election. The first embraces presidential electors. members of the house of representatives of the Tailed States and State officers, "includ ing Judges" aud sonators. Jjdgre are no here else mentioned, and no distinction is made between candidates for judicial olTi- ces, wlietner tor tbe supreme court, presi dent juJges of the common pleas, orphans' court, additional law judges or associate udges. All must be taken as included by the legislative intent in construing tbe mean ing of the word "judges."' We fail to see anything in tbe act which even suggests a different conclusion. Tbe language of the act is so plain that it requires no lawyer to interpret it. It was the clear duty of Weyant to file bis certificate ia the state department wilhin the prescribed time, aad having neglected to do so, that filed in the commissioner's office c in not avail to secure ths printing of his name on the ortia! ballot. B. llol berbaum, Somerset, Pa. Hlcks's Forecast for November. About the 3d and 3d of November wiil center a reactionary change to warmer. which change will begin in the West with southerly winds, growing cloudiness and rain. These conditions will advance east ward during the 3d and lib, followed closely by the shifting of tbe wind to westerly and colder. About the "th a very marked storm period will begin. Botb the "Vulcan" and Mercury disturbances are central on tbe Mtb, making direct connection with the new moon on tbe morning of the same day. This period will set in with a decided change to warmer in western parts, resulting in very active storms of rain and wind, turning to snow and sleet in many places northward, and followed promptly by a severe and gen eral cold wave. From about Ibe 7th to 10th, beginning in the west, all parts of the coun try will in turn experience the progressive and changing phases cf the period. There are reasons to apprehend hard and dangeroos gales in connection with tbe disturbances of this period, especially on tbe lakes and nor tberly seas. Sharp cold and freezing may bi expected immediately behind the area of low barometers, and storms, causing cold and frosty weather, generally up to the ebanges to wsrmer and stormy from about tbe Htb to lG:b. Be on the wa'ch for sud den changes to colder after the storm area of each period passes to the east of your locality. Tbe opposition of Jupiter occurs oa the 17th, and there is much indication that these oppositions greatly excite all atmos pheric perturbations occurring about such times. This opposition will likely be felt osl severely during the storm period run ning from the l'J.h to 23 1. Tbe Venus ex citement will sis') be present at Ibis period. giving good grounds for fearing heavy storms as a result. Heed our warning and be on tbe watch for them and for the cold that will ova behind them on land and water. Tbe final crisis of this period may not come until the full moon, on tbe 23 1, but be ready for severe storms, with danger on the lakes, at a ly time during tbe period. The Venus ex trcmes from warm to sudden piercing cold, with tbnnderand rain, turning to north-west gales and snow, will show themselves at this time, Tbe Venus equinox is central on the 20th, and its iofiieoces will be plainly felt ia all disturbances for about 2) days before and 20 days after that date. Ordinary or nor mal disturbances otherwise will be excited into great and prolonged violence, so that many disasters ill be beard from. The reactionary movements about the 23d to 27th will feel ibe ceutial force of this Venus period and wind op in great cold. So will tbe regular storm period, which begins about the last day of the month and runs into the opening davs of December. 1 v Loos; I Institute.
