May Hunt, a 13-year-old daughter of Con ductor Tucker Hunt, of the Baltimore and Ohio railroad, was very seriously burned on the fair grounds at I'nioutown, Thursday. Her clothing caught lire from a piece of paper lighted by a match dropped by a care less smoker. Her dress was almost burned o!f before the Hames were pot out. bhe was very badly burned about the limbs and body. Fayette county is soon to have one of tbe largest potteries in Pennsylvania. A compa ny of men from Pittsburgh were in Cnion town, Saturday, in consultation about tbe matter, and the plans were all consumated. The new factory is to he located near Somer field. on tbe Fayette county side. The loca--tion cf the works at that place was due to the excellent clay found in that immediate vicinity. Some eight or ten head of horses were sold by auctioneer John A. Walter, in the pub lic niusre. Friday aftemoow. There were a large nnmb-.T of persons present, but bid ding was not very spirited. The prices paid for tbe animals ranged from five to thirty five dollars. A mare and colt sold for ten dollars. Owing to tbe scarcity of feed it is a hard matter to find a buyer for a horse at any price. George Keagries, a prominent Dunkard preacher and one of the best known men in Bedford county, ccaimitted suicide Sunday mom ng, by banging at bis home near tva'cicville. He held serwer Saturday niht and appeared to be in particularly good spirits. He arose at " o'clock in the morning and went to the barn and fed bis horses as was bis usual custom. Two hours later his family found hint banging to a cherrv tree close to tbe bouse. Mr. John Biesecker, of Jenner township, druve through town one day last week with a load or. his wagon that attracted consider able attention. It was a Williams evarat or for maple sugar, the first one ever brought to ibis county. The machine is manufac tured in Bellow Fails, Vermont, and is the kind recommended by one of tbe Ucturers al tbe last Farmers' Institute as the best and most extensively tued in tbe great maple sugar producing state of Vermont. Mr. Bleiecker has accepted tbe agency for the sale of these machines. A very heavy bail storm passed over a portion of this county Thursday evening. Somerset was only touched by the edge of the storm. There was a steady downpour for about twenty minutes, accompanied by high winds, hud when it was over the ground was covered with hailstones. The storm was particularly severe north of here. Iu Jenner township consider-!' damage was done. The roof was partly nli, n ' tfof a lam on tbe George J. Countryman farm and a cumber of trees on this farm were blown down. The bara on the farm of Mr. Michael Sipe was also unroofed. The Mt. Zion Lutheran Church, n-ar Jenner X Roads, was badly dan-aged. The roof was b":oi n ctl atid a potti'i cf the gable blown iu. A tree was blown across the house on Win. W. Grittith's farm. A great deal of stan iing limber was destroyed by the storm. Earn Struck by Lightning:. About live o'clock Wednesday morning, the iaree barn on the farm of Mr. J. M. Bowman, one-half mile north of Friedens, in Somerset township, was struck by ligbt nirg and in a short time the building and its contents was in nsbes. Among the con tents of the baru were twenty tons of bay, four hundred dozen of wheat, sixty bushels of rye, tbne hundred dozen of cats, eight sacks of bone meal, feed cutler, coru-sbeiler, harness, bridles, saddles, and a ipuautity of agricultural implements. The only live stock in the baru at the time of the tire was three horses and two calves. With much didiculty Mr. Bowman succee led ia rescu ing all of these from the flames with the ex ception of one of the caives. There was an insurance, in the Farmer's Union, of one thousand dollars on the building but none on the contents. Owing to the loss of bis barn Mr. Bowman will sell all of bis live stock at public sale, on Thursday, Sept. 1 i. Death of an Aged Farmer. Mr. I'aniel Coleman, one of Somerset township's oldest and best known farmers, died at bis home about five miles south-ea-t of this place, between eight aud nine o'clotk Tuesday night. Mr. Coleman bad been in Somerset during tbe day, and while at Mr. Charles Weimer'a black-smith shop, was stricken with paralysis. In the eiening te was removed to his home where he died within an hour after reaching it. Tbe deceased was the oldest member of the Evangelical Ltnbe-an Church, of Berlin, having been confirm ed as a member of that organization over sixty years ago. He was in his eighty-eighth year and during his long life enjoyed the reputation of an honest aprigbt man. Tbe remains were interred in tbe Odd Fellow's Ceruetry, in Berlin. Hon. Cyrus Coleman, of Markleviite, California, is the only surviving child of the deceased. Jonathan Boyts Dead. Mr. Jonathan Boyts, one of the most bigb.y respected farmers of Somerset town ship, died at bis borne one mile cor.h of Friedens, Sunday afternoon. His remains were interred in the cemetry at Friedens, Tuesday afternoon. Tbe deceased was bora an the P'lh day of September, IsU, and was const 'Uent'y sev enty nine years of age on tbe day of bis death. He was a kind and generous neigh bor, honest and upright in all of bis deal ings with bis fellow-men, and enjoyed the rrsptct and esteem of all who knew bim. His surviving children are four sons ; Cap. lian John H- Boyts, of Pittsburgh ; Benja min F., of Connellsville ; Will E., of Johns town : Jodiah and Charles, of Somerset township. An Aged Woman Passes Away. Mrs. Annie Eiiziheth Fisher died in Ber lin, Thursday afterm on, aged eighty-two years and twenty-eight days. Mrs. Fisher was the mother of twelve children, nine sons and three daughters, of whom ail except three are still living, viz: laniel J , Tobias S and Carrie L. widow of Raius Laniits, ea.'h of whom reside in Ber lin ; John G., of Altoona. Pa. ; Henry ' Principal of one of the public schools of Pittsburgh, Pa. ; Samuel P., of Dakota LI. ; Rev. W. At the residence of the bride's parents, on Patriot street, on Thursday last. Rev. J. S. Harkey, pastor of the Lutheran church, per formed tbe ceremony which united tbe lives and fortunes of Miss Nora C. Cunningham, daughter of Mr. H. ti. Cunningham, and Mr. John U. Woy. a son of Mr. Joslah Woy, of Somerset township. The newiy married couple took the evening train for Chicago. A Jobntiowner Probably Fatally In jured at Stanton Mills. Some lime ago the comtaUaioners of Somerset County derided to erect a bridge over Quemahoning Creek at Stanton's Mills and a number of stonemasons took tbe contract for the erection of stone abutment. Among them was George F. Lavtly, of Jobnaiown. Mr. Lave'y was helping to frectthe derrick to be used iu lifting the Leavy stone. Four guy ropes were used in supporting the denies: and no one thought that there was any danger of its breaking. It appears from what can be learned that the oval piece of iron which is generally used in the construction of a derrick was not used in this case so that the rojies which supported the derrick were tied to the top of the der rick, one part of which bad a sharp edge and against which one of the ropes pressed. Thursday afternoon about 4 o'clock the men were engaged ia lifting a heavy stone wiih a derrick, when, wi'hout any warning, one of tbe guy ropes broke and the derrick fell. Mr. Lavely, who was under it, saw it coming and attempted to get out of its way. A loot more and be would have succeeded, but be was struck on the head by the top of the derrica and knocked down with terrific fcrce. He was picked up and taken to bis beard ing house, and physicians were sent for. I'rs. Noou and Gardner, of Hooversville, and Lenbart, of Jeanertown, responded and remained most of the night with the in jured man. His injuries were found to consist of an obliipue laceration on the back of the bead, a bad fracture of tbe occipital ' bone on the back of his head through which tbe brains oozed, aud numerous bruise? about the body. Tbe election for members of tbe Advisory Committee of the Baltimore Ohio Relief Pepartment will be held on October 4th, and tbe returns must be made not later than Oc tober l-'I'-h. How to Kill Grasshoppers. Frederick Shattock, of Sheridan, X. Y., has invented and applied for a patent on a device for catching and exterminating tbe grasshoppers. It consists of a light plat form ten or twelve feet long and half as wide. At the back is placed a thin rear board six feet high. A horse is hitched to each of the two front corners. The trap is then dragged across a field, and the hoppers which Uy up in the twelve feet of space between the horses strike against the bsck wall of the trap and fall down on tbe lower part or bot tom, where a coating of tar receives them and holds them fast. They are afterwards scraped off and burned. Mr. Shattock stiys be captured four bushels of hopf?rs in one trip across one of bis fields. He Las made application for a patent on the trap, which he thinks is the best device extant. -- Stray Steer.
