Mrs. Boose noticed that Har ry, their youngest ion and a bright lad. of about lti years of age. was ab-nt tdat fore coon and supposed be had gone alon with bis father to the mill. When upon the fa ther' return it was learned that the boy bad not been along with him. tbe parents thought it a little strange. The field wa about 2J yards from the barn. Tbe father proceeded to the field, where be was horrified to find his on lying upon tbe ground- in an unconscious condi tion. Persons living in the neighborhood of Long's claim to know who the robliers are but areafraid to make their suspicion known for tear that sufficient evidence can not be obtained to secure tbe conviction of tbe guilty parties ia court. Between 11 and 12 o'clock Monday mgbt Mr. Long was aroused by a knock at tbe front door. Calling to his only son, who was sleeping in an adjoining room, he bade him tee who was without. It never occur ed to Mr. Long that robbers were seeking admission, but he thought that some neigh bor was in distress or that a belated traveler wished to inquire in regard to the roads. No Sooner had the younger Long opened tbe door than he wts dealt a savage blow on the head with club in tbe bands of one of the men oa the outside. Philadelphia correspond ent of the Lancaster Injuirrr sayst A year ago it was selling at about ?n per ton. So rapid has been the advance that $tl per ton has been added to the price during the past ten days, wbile the present market price for choice to fjney baled bay along the Atlantic seaboard ranges from $ JJ to ISi ir ton. Tbe tame quality of baled hay is sell ing in Great Britain at and more per ton and it is hard to get even at those prices. This is due to the sbort crops in England, France, Austria and Germany. This is tbe first time in many years that Europe has been compelled to ask this country for such a large amount of bay, and it is tbe Erst time in the history of America that Lay has been exported to Germany. Few people realize what an enormous bus iness the hay trade is. Tbey fuliy appreci ate the importance of ' King Cotton,". and when they bear occasionally tbat some prominent broker has been wrecked in a wheat corner, tbey conclude tbat much mon ey is made and lost in tbat cereal, but tbe hay trade in considered "small potatoes." For such readers it may lie well to state tbat bay is thecbief crop in the United States, as far as its money value is concerned, an 1 that it long ago distanced " King Cotton," for many years the leading crop, and now stands without a rival. The latest official figure obtainable show tbat the area devot ed to hay cultivation is IVvol'I.JWJ acres, the annual crop amounting to 4 i.lilll.iKM tons, amounting in value to $4o.'4:,'.i..Vi'.'. This is far in excess of any other crop. Tbe Foiled States stands first among ca tions in the annual product of hay ; Ger many is second, Russia third, France fourth and Austria tifih. These five countries f.r-ni-ib five sixths of the entire bay crop of the world, and the shortage of the crop in Eu rope, est, claliy in Germany, where tbe gov ernment baa been compelled to interfere, his caused a lively demand upon tbe United 8: ites. In some parts of Germany tbe scar city of fodder has abnormally enhanced tbe value of farm animals, and to relieve this trnble and save these German farmers from , bankrnptcy tbe government has interdicted the export of fodder. Other continental na tions, particularly France and Austria, fear ing a possible fodder famine at home, have taken a hand in the matter, and the surplus stock ia to be held for local needs ; it cannot be exported. Tbe result of this has been that tbe eye of purchasers have been turn ed t the United State with a strong possi bility tbat bay will be exported extensie!y this year. Tae demand for hay in tbe Urge cities bas been lessened during tbe past three year from a peculiar cause the substitution of electricity and (team for horse power on sur face car lines. Tbe street railroad of New York city had, until the introduction of the cable system, 20,tXX) horses ia service, and tbe total camber of hone and mules on American street railroads was not far from 700,0u0. Now with 7,00i) miles of trolley road and over l,50u of cable, there is decid edly leas demand for horse and mules, and correspondingly smaller demand for bay and fodder. Wben one door shut another open declares an ancient proverb, and tbi it shown to be the case in the Lay business this year. Wanted. A married man to farm at " Pine Spring Farm." Griffith, No. 41 M Wabash Ave. A Boy Swallows a Hornet. A Beaver Falls telegram states that a Sun day school pic nic was held near Wallace Run last Wednesday. There is nothing unnsual in this informa tion, but something hap-ued during the day not down on the program. Harry Lock wood, of Bridgewater, was eat ing raspu-rry pie. Just as he wedged an enormous bite of pie into bis mouth a hor net alighted un itand Lockwood swallow ed pie and hornet. As the liery little insect slipped down his throat it stung him on a tonsil. The membranous covering of the Mesh made it ssiL!e for the bee to with draw its hot little lancet, and as Lockwood danced and screamed it applied its sling en ergetically, s it slipped fu: ther down bis throat. Once upon the itisi le of the "grand stand'' the hornet started the brass band and there was for a minute or two some of tbe most stirring music ever h-rd. Young Ix-kwood yelled, " I'm bit, I'm bit," and every woman on the ground cried "snakes." A pauio ensued and children and teachers fell over each other in their efforts to escape and give Lockwood room. Finally some body caught hitu and learned what was wrong. By this time the hornet was taking a rest. Loikwood quieted down and after copious draughts of milk felt well enough to start for home. A Welcome Visitor. Mr. Jacob Cobaugh, of Pailiieipbia, is paying a pleasant visit to his relatives, Messrs. George Cobaugh and George C. I.icb ty, of Somerset township, after au abseuce of thirty-nine years. Shortly after Mr. Co baugh s last visit be entered the employ of the North Penn'a R. R. Mr. Cobaugh miraculously escaped with bis life but lost the sight of both bis eyes. While suUering the most excruciating pain be had tbe presence of mind to give bis last and fi nal orders to the members of tbe crew still living, at the same time dictating a message to his young wife iu Philadelphia, tellirg her tbat he was burt but not dangerously, although he was totally blind al the time and bas been ever since. His body, too. was frightfully scalded, and a number of frag ments of burning coal Lad penetrated his Ceh. Since that unfortunate morning Mr. Cobaugh has lived a happily with his fam ily as have majority of the people who enjoy all of their senses. Mr. Cobaugh is now man cf sixty years of age. He is six feet talh He is well post ed on all the current topics of the day ami discusses them intelligently. He is a native of Johnstown aud grew to nun s estate in that city. During his boyhood day le made frequent visits to bis relatives (the Co baugh family) near Somerset. To-day be recalls many p'easant reminiscences of h i visits at tbst time, and although deprived i f his sight he very well remembers the beau tilul scenery surrounding Somerset. After an absence of so many years Mr. Cobaugh feels highly delighted in the opportunity of visiting his friends and relatives, while tbey regard his visit as a rare treat an d hope that his visit may be more fre-rient in tbe fu ture. Mr. Cobaugh was convey eJ to Somereet by our good friend, W. H. Miller, Esq. Geo. C. Lkhty. The Pansy For August Comes to as with its usual tainnt tf good things. It never fails to do that.
