Pa The Coming Election. Tbe comiiig spring election is perb ps tbe most important ever held in this state. E pec'ially is this true as far as it relates to offi cers of elections. The Judges and inspectors elected this month will be tbe first to serve under the new ballot law. Too math care cannot be xrcied in mtkin nominations for these ufMcrs. The law is a long and rather complicated one, so none but the very best men should be selected to bold tbe elec tions next fail. Ii is unfonuna'e that this new law should go into effect on a Presidential year, as tbe tirket is mu'"b longer luno ordi narily and more work will be required. However, this cannot be chang-d now and we must accept it. It can, however, be met by the selection of competent men to pre side over our borough and township elec tions. I'uiess thia is done much trouble. inonveni-noe, an 1 po-sib'y loss of votes, may result from incompetent offi--ials As a number cf the primaries are to be beld this week we would urze upon tbe Rpub:ic-a-.is and Democrats, also, the vita! impor tance of naur.natin; oi'r w-tl! eqfpped men for the p-witioos to be filled upon tbe election boards. Death of Susan Allison, Who Had tOO Black Cats, and Told Fortunes. Tbe following dispatch, credited to Som erset, appeared ia a Pittsburgh paper oue day last week r "The death in Shade town ship, Tuesday, of Susan Allisoa, aged oi years, removes one of the most unique char acters that ever lived in tbe mountain. She owned and mansgul a barge acock farm for thirty years. Tbe chestnut hedge fences, the large one-story log-bowse, almost cot tied with vines, gave ber home a preternatural appearance. Many stories of witchcraft and conjaring are related, of which she was tbe media no. She never failed to core toothache or taka the fire from severe burns. As a veterinari an she was considered infallible ; botts, col ic, distemper and sweeny were cured instant ly by incantations or words. She was con sidered an adept mind-reader, could fonell tbe exact date of dearh or marriage, and in several instances caused stolen goods to be returned. Among ber domestic animals. eats were tbe objects of her tenderast care and attention, and at no time of ber life was she tbe mistress of less than one bandied of tbe feline tribe of tbe blackest hue." A few years ago Miss Allison was married to one John Shaffer, since dead, and remov ed to Bedford county, and wss a resident of one of the eastern townships of that coun at tbe time of her death. A special trsin of two passenger coaches and four bagxage cars, carrying the Meining er Dramatic Company, composed entirely of Germans, en route from Washington Cty to Pittsburgh, passed through town Sunday evening, over the Haiti more Jt Ohio road. The train was in charge of Conductor Bis marck Smutx. Engine No. 7'JS, in charge of Engineer Michael Darr, hauled tL It was considerably behind time, and in order to make op some of tbe lost Caie. did some of tbe fastest running ever done on the Pitts burgh division. It came down the mountain at tbe rate of a milea minute. Tbe run from Ohio Pyie to this place, nearly eighteen miles, was covered in exactly seventeen i minutes. When the train stopped here to take water and be inspected, it wss discover ed that about ten inches of tbe flange on one of the rear pony wheels on the front trth k of the engine wss broken off. It was not known where the accident happened and the crew were so thankful they were living that they did not trouble themselves to go out on a bant for tbe broken lisnge. Conductor Smutx, when a-ked about the accident, said t " No, I cannot tell where tbe accident happened, but I'll teil you if it bad been one of tbe front whee's instead of tbe rear oue, you would bave known where it happened.
