A uispatch from Hollidaysbarg says that late Saturday afternoon word was received in that place asking fur assistance, as the Blair County Almshouse was on fire. The Pba-nix Tire Company promptly responded. The flames had evidently broken out in the centre of the building, and, owing to the prevailing high wind, the great structure was soon a mass of flames. There were sixty-three peepers (n the building at the time, several of them being wok -minded, and in the fright and confu sion that followed the rt alarm one insane patient perished in the Came, while half a dozen others were badly burned. The build ing was situated on biarh ground, and the reservoir near by was only half fall, so the firemen could do little but assist as much as possible the frenzied palienta, some of whom troggied and foagbt to make their way back into the fire. One idiot, earned Nettie Yongling, after being carried screaming from her room, tore away from her rtrner and haried herself into the flames, shrieking with insane de light whit ber2eah was roasting, and tear- ng her clothing from her smoking body until her strength gave way when she sank down to a horrible death. The emre force of men about the place were working at the time in the fields, and ring the alarm rutoed back, only to turn their atteotion to catching and holding the iumates, all of whom seemed insane from excitement. Father Donnelly and Rev. Dr. Swarti were the only able bodied men about the place, and the firemen and citizens at arrived only in time to prevent these two brave men from being torn to pieces by the stronger road women, who tried time and again to throw themselves back into the flames from which they bad been dragged. Mrs. Yongling was auccessful, and another patient, Mrs. Fiasber, was nearly so, beiug so horribly burned before being dragged from the fiames that she will probably die. Poor Director A. J. McKee, while it rul ing with a woman, was draped into the Canies and to badly baratd be will be crip pled for life. An insane man named Low ry escaped into the mountains, bowling with joy at sight of the flames and his onexpect- ed liberty. He was followed by a yelling gang of men and boys, but the last seen of m be was making into the wilds. No one dared to slop the cad man, and woman and cQildren fleeing from Uie apparition of a half clad maniac, pursued by a tuoo that dared aot to cotue too close. The man will prob ably d.eof exposure units he succeeds in making shelter. A bauj patient, frightened, weak and half mad, groped his way out of a back room that was filled with flames and smoke, and was found hours afterward hid. tig in a corn crib, weakly muttering that a mob had come to kill htm. He was taken to the city and cared for. While the madmen, paupers and somen of the bouse were being carried to shelter another scene ensued that was more shame ful than anything that ever occurred in the county. A mob of men ana ooys irom mis city and surrounding country gathered at the smouldering rain and piilage-i the wreck. Tbey dog their way into the cellar, where they found kegs of wine, cider and Lquors intended for tbe patients, and s drunken carnival ensued that puts to blush the wildest orgies of the savages. Haif barned goods were dragged from the black ened beap, and a dozen fights took place over some article of more than ordinary value. When the police finally arrived the ghouls and drunken mob were driven from Uie place, the police forming a cordon, and meant a broken head lo break into the line. The inmates many of them badly burned or bruised in their siru&t'.es, are all in this city to-night and being well cared for by physicians. The women will spend the night in the St. Mary's Catholic Schools, while tbe men paupers are being cared for in the Opera House by Colonel W. G. Murray Post No. y., G. A. R. The fire originated from a defective flue. and as the building was far from any settled community there was no hope of saving it, every attention being given to tbe inmates. The estimated loss is between 140.000 and JViO.Ocio. with about $!V"J insurance. Tbe county pcor records were lost in the fire and the County Auditors will be enable to pass upon the receipts and expenditures for this ear. McDowell, No. 6371 Penn Avenue, East Liberty. BOYER'S CASE STILL UP. Judge Orvls Dsnojncss th Utiliz ing of th Stat Senate for Political Purpose. HstBiEr. Oct. 2 The Senate was scenpied last week in listening to speakers in the Boyer case. Tbe Republicans charged the Democrats and tbe Attorney General with a purpose to make political capital out of tbe inquiry. Tbe Attorney General asked that he be permitted to re-examine Mr. Boyer. Counsel for the accused objected because the case wis rjoeei. The Attorney General made an ofTer to examine the State Treasurer on mailers occurring between his election and the assumption of the duties of his office, but the chair decided tbe propo sition to be inadmissible under the resolu tion adopted. Tbe Attorney General de clined to put the questions, and declared that he eoulc be of no farther use to the Senate in this branch of the investigation. Tbe questions were then propounded by Senator Robbns and the State Trcasunr answered that he knew nothing of the busi ness of the basks. Judge Orvii, of Beilefonte, made an elab orate argumest at the session of the Senate to-day in opposition to tbe claims of the Governor ss rteognized in bis proclamation amd message, that the Senate ha power by a two-third wote to address the Executive requesting the removal of officials for mis behavior and misdemeanor in office. He cited a large number of authorities to show that the SenaU had no such power, and con tended that n person elected to office by tbe people, and commissioned, and who had entered on the discharge of his duties, could be removed as proposed, unless previously impeached, or convicted. He regarded the cases under consideration those of State Treasurer Boyer and Auditor General Mc Ca mailt the most important since tbe de cision of the Supreme Court in the Milligan case, holding that no person charged with a civil offense could be tried by a mihtary commission. Tb proposition to remove tbe officials, he said, ought to tartle the Cim monweallh, so monstrous was it. Judge Orris said t "If a Republican Gov ernor and two thirds of a Republican Senate had made such a proposition as this, to take tbe otficts of two Democratic officials, every Democratic lawyer in tbe Commonwealth ould have risen in his wrath and denounc ed the proceedings as revolutionary. Tbe Democratic Senators of this body cannot aflord to support any such monstrous prop osition, and as a Democrat I protest against it." Lamps, Lilasswar. Crant's Tomb Moved, The work of removing the tomb f Gen eral Grant in Riverside Park. New York, to the spot where the remains will rest perma nently, and where the monument i to be erected, which was begun on October Tth, was completed Satarday evening. It was a slow process, thongh tbe distance bom ths place where the temporary tocab bas stood to th permanent site is only thirty-six fret altogether twenty-seven (set to th north and then nine feet to tbe west ; bat a great dal of care was necessary. The tomb weigh s little less than two hundred tons, and T. P. Gailigan, tbe mover, was under ),000 bonds to perform lb work atisictorily, whka neant that th tomb ran st be intact wbea. it reached its destina tion. The to rah traveled northward along three heavy timber rails. It rested on big wooden cross-pieces, and was propelled by means of jack-screws at a speed of less than a foot an hour. The former position of the tomb was nine feet below the base of the permanent concrete foundation for the monument. It took antil last Thursday to raise it to the level of the surface, and the it journey began. Tbe concrete foundation for the monu ment is to be 107 feet square. It will be composed offoar piers, twenty feet deep. Three of tbe piers have been completed. The removal of the tomb wa necessary at this time to permit of the building of the fourth pier of th southeast corner. When the foundation is finished it will contain 4.G0O yards of concrete, and win have cost about ().00. Th surface of the founda tion is 130 feet above tidewater. The top of the monument will be 100 feet above that. Tbe foundation will be completed in a few weeks, bat work on tbe superstructure will not begin until next spring.
