Treds ell fc Co, The completion of the Philadelphia, Har risaorgand P.rtsbnrgb railroad, wbich took place on Saturday afternoon when the la?t rail was laid near Shircmanstown, in Cum berland county, means a great deal to tbt railroad interests of the state. It give the Reading road an outlet to Pittsburgh aad the west ; opens up a new route to the soft coal and coke regions, and will also furnish the Reading a southwestern outlet for its anthracite Coal, which has long been need ed. In fact it is likely to become one of the most important parts of the Reading system. Just bow tbe completion of this line will affect tbe unfinished South Penn road is not plain at this time, but the probabilities are that it will not be built for many a day to come, if indeed it shall ever be finished. So far is the people are concerned they desire its completion, for the more truuk lines in the state the greater tbe competition in both freight and passenger rates. .iritWc Stir. It provides that the practice of solicit ing from a candidate, verbally or by letter, money for a fair, festival or other entertain ment ia the interest of a charity, corpora tion or church, shall be a misdemeanor and subject the offender to a fine not exceeding JjO and imprisonment not exceeding three months, or cither or both at the discretion of tbe court. It is charitable to suppose tbat those who insist on seiiing tickets or securirg sub scriptions for.religious or charitable purposes from candidaies fjr ofllce do not realize that tbey are rea'.iy guilty of corrupt solicitation. Whether tbey real ire it or not tbey are in effect guilty of this crime against good gov ernment, and it will be well to have the offense defined in set legal terms. jf all tbe people in tUeworld regions people should be the last to seek to secure money as the pries of an implied support of a candidate for office. Candidates for public office should be supported solely for their fitness f r the posi tion tbey are to fill and not because they can be squeezed into giving large or email nrusof money t a ctantatne or relig ous purposes simply because tbey are candi dates and waut votes. Miller, of Crsina, died in Conneilsville on Friday, April 17, lt!'l. The deceased was a member of Lodge No. 80) I. O. O. F. and a Comrade of Ross Rash Tost No. 3C1, of Trsina. The funeral was largely attended on Sunday afternoon. April lCnh. at Crsina. The I. O. O. F. of of Addison, Confluence, Conneilsville and Ohio Pyle were well rep resented, with a goodly representation of (J. A. R. men from adjacent points. Tbe fu neral discourse was delivered by Elder Lari mer, cf tbe Insciples' chnrcb. Rev. William Barnes, of Conneilsville and Rev. James R. Brown were present, and assisted in tbe ser vices. Comrade Miller wa born in Somerset township, this county, on June 13, l-Q'-Tie was descended from Revolutionary stock, two grandfathers having held comissions in tbe Continental army under Washington. His grandfather Miller, was the first sheriff of Somerset county. Comrade Milkr enlisted on March -T, '02, in tbe 'Vltfa Pennsylvania Infantry. He re ceived a gunshot wound in bis left leg at tbe battle of Lynchburg, Va., on the I3th of June, 1S64. He was discharged from tbe C S. service on Ju!y 8, It-Co. His wounded leg had been a continual source of trouble to him since tbe war, re maining swollen almost double its natural size, and continually in a state of chronic ulceration, requiring daily attention and bandages. There is no doubt but that tbe wound caused the sud Jen illness and death of comrade Miller. G. A. R. Wueeias, Comrade Abraham A. Miller, late of the 51th Penn'a. Infantry, and comrade of Ross Rush, Post No. Otil G. A. R. of Trsina, was removed from our midst by th- grim destroyer, death, leaving a widow and family of children to mourn his demise. Therefore, i?iVi-'t, as comrades of this Post, we hereby unite ia expressing our hear.felt sympathy with tbe bereaved fami ly of our deceased comrade by recording this bumble tribute of respect to tbe memory of one wbo was a faithful comrade, a kind neighbor, anl whose hand was every ready to assist in time of sickness, sorrow or dis tress. A West Virginia Snake. Tbe Wheeling Inttiigeacer $ Kingwood, W. Va., correspondent has discovered what be calls "a man snake " in the Preston coun ty Infirmary. The unfortunate creature is 23 year of age. Its parents are described as intelligent and well-to-do. Until the moth er died recently tbey hve kept this son at borne entirely secluded, and but few people ever knew of the existence of sucb an un natural offspring. Tbe bead of tbe thing looks like tbat of a bnge snake; the eyes are small and set far back in tbe bead, wbich bear no resemb lance to that of a man. At times this pecu liar being becomes almost uncontrollable, and will dart from place to place with lightning-like rapidity. At night it is necessary to allow a light to shine into the room or it wiil not lie down to sleep. This man-snake does not seem to possess a single idea, and its month i so shaped tbat it will not admit of anything but liquid food. He bas subsis ted since birth upon a sort of thin gruel, which be takes from a vessel with tbe eager ness of a hog. The limbs of tbe man are unnaturally small, although at times be seems to possess inhuman strength. Tbe superior merit of Ayer's Cherry Pec toral as an anodyne expectorant is due to a skilful combination of tbe most powerful ingredient. Nothing like it bas ever been attempted in pharmacy, and its success in the cure of pulmonary complaints is unpar alleled. Save Yourself Money.
