A Race For Life. A young n an and Li-lx girl, ho lac at New art, JT. J., have had a.a 1 venture that il lini?tr in their memo ries for some time. It vaa waUtad witb intense interest by a larre crowd who expstled to nee a frightful accident bot witneed io'rtead a hair breadth escape. Ore of the favorite walks f tho New ark ladu and laaun in along the j.ictur esjuc bank of the rfaic river. The road skirt- the river, which w generally dotted ith craft of all sort frora th ro ing shell lo the linuter, and is shad ed by gigantic elrus, which almort meet ovei head, fonuing-a bower at al! hours. The only meana cf crowing from one bank of the river to the other above Nemark ia by the Midland railroad bridge. It is hiiort li1ini Mow IVUe vilie. The bridge a uie-Uack treble, about sixty f-rtiiuh and one kundred yarda long. There ia no fnoiiaLh and it iQ be crowed only by walking in the center of the track or the tiee, which are alKuta foot apart. The height of the bridge is w great and the water is eo plaiuly :s:ble between the tiea that the Iasa?e in hazardous to aii but those of nerve. A a additional danger is the liability or oieeting t-r heing overtaken by trains, Thiaifwhat happened lo the young man and hia bet girl. Heveral times they Urted to go across, but turned back because they heard the whistle of a train which w-iued to 1 approaching. But after waiting about fifteen minutes and aeviujr no train they started aain. Tho young man walked in the center of t he trifkand partially supported the girl, w ho stood frarW.y near Die rails, lliey had r. a. aed the center of the bridge when cries from some persons standing at the end causing them to look up. The sight that met theireyes sent their hearts into their throats. Thundering through the cut at full Fit-ed, and coming towards them, were a locomotive and four co.ic.h es. The young man paused for an in sUct, as if to collect his thoughts, w hile the girl clung deierately to bis arm. To turn hack was too late, and yet there ap parently was no otiier way of escape. The young man's eyes suddenly fell upon an opera box like shed at the side of the track some dihtunoe ahead. It shelt ered the cogwheel of the draw. It was not much larger than a kennell, but it would save them if they could reach it lwfore the train was upon them. It took the young man less than a second to de cide, and then began a race for life. (irapping the frightened girl aliout the waift he hurried her ut a terrific pace sen- the ties to the only haven. The engineer evidently did not see them, for the train came ru-hing on. AfalseUep would have burled the young man, and Krhaps the girl to the waters, fifty feet below, but his eyes were riveted upon 1 the ties as they tlew under him and his feet fell accurately and firmly in their centres. The crowd watched the race with horror. Nearer and nearer approach ed the iron juggernaut, and faster acd faster flew the couple. The engineer sud denly spied them, and put on the brakes. It waa too late, however, for the train could not overcome its momentum ;n the few rods that now intervened between it and the two young people. The train was not a doen feet away when the young man and girl reached the box and tum bled into it, while the locomotive whi. aed past them. The train stopped at the other end of the bridge, but w ent on again as soon as it w as learned that no one liad leen injur d. The couple in the meantime crawled out of the box aud gleefully, but very nervously, resumed their journey across the bridge. They hurried away from the crowd which was wailing almost with opeu arms to receive them, before their names could be learn ed. It w ill be some time, probably, be fore they walk across the bridge again. .V. I". World. From the Nation's Capitol. Mr. A.N. Hazen, Washington, I). An item regarding the alleged absorp tion of tho typhoid bacillus from the soil into the juices of plants, w here the fertil izing aent that has been used lias been light soil from the city vaults, has had vuie currency in our sanitary periodicals. While the typhoid bacillus can at times le detected in the manure obtained from the scavengers, no competent observer has, we think, detected it in the juices of veifetables that have been manured w ith that suljstar.ee. The use of such manure is, however, rot wholly free from danger, and vege tahiw thst do not pass through th pro ess of boiling in their preparation for (he table should be cleansed from all at tached foreign matter with unusual care. In the neighborhood of many of our eitiea the cultivators of celery and other gardeu vegetables add liquid night-soil manure to their fields in order to advance the growth of tiieir crops. A certain portion tif this fertilizer can nut fail to lodge on tlie leave and litems of aatrii edible plants as celery, which filth wUl not all be disengaitcd and ashed away by the ordinary- process of cleansing for table ose. Celery is es pecially mentioned because it ia peculiar ly apt to catch and bold the solid con ten ta of the acattered cemi pit manure, and ia thU dirt the bacilli of typhoid fever have ben dectected time and again.
