is located on Murd ek't steel tramway, two

day 10 inst, says : There arrived at (Le State
Department to-day an express box, foor by
two teet. containing a suit of clothes, a doub
le barrelled shot cun and revolver. These
articles were sent by the attorney of the
Xice.'v brothers, who have been convicted of
the murder of Farmer I'mberger, of Somer
set county.
The evidence in connection with the cloth
ing and weapons 5a entirely new, and it is
claimed ti at it will fasten the murder of
Cn.lxrjer upon a man named John Leach.
The case of the Nicely brothers will come
before the Board of Pardons to-morrow.

tbe lata Curtis Kooser and mother of Fnndt
J. Koceer. Esq . died Thursday last, after
short ricknev, at ber borne in this borough.
Mrs. Kooser was the youngest danghter of
tbe late Francis Kiernan and was born on
the 9lh day of February. 1SJ7. She was mar
ried on the 6ii day of September. lf)42u Ber
death occurred on tbe bth day of November,
110. She was a consistent member of tbe
Lutheran church from childhood.
Owing to the exacting care of ber large
family Mr. Kooser was rarely seen in public
bat ber society was continually sought after

ber wise and motherly counsel. Mrs. Koos
er was one of those wooderfuli J giftd moth

spontaneity that characteriars iuCtncy. She
was woman of smc geoerooa impulse and
was ever willing to share tbe family loaf with
the stranger who chanced within ber gates.
Of no one can tbe description of tbe virtuous
woman in Proverbs be more aptly applied :
"Sue louktrlh well to the ways of ber booae-
hold. end eateUi not the bread of Wleoese."

Mrs. Kooser' death resulted from mala
ria freer and was contracted while nursing
her sons. Park and EJtnund, both of whom
are still suffering from that malady.
Congressman Scull Serenaded.
A goodly number of Crpoblican voters
from Salisbury, Meyernlaue and Rockwood
accompanied by an exosllent band of mosic
arrirtd in Somerset on a special train at
eight o clock Friday evening, tor the pur
pose of tendering Uoogteasroan Scnll a sere
nade and to congratulate bim npon his re
election.
The visitors were met at the S. 4 C. B K.
station, by a large delegation of citixaisof
this place, beaded by band of marshal mu
sic A procession was at once formed and.
started for Mr. Scull's residence on Union
street. On the wsy it was j jined by many
of Mr. Scull'a personal friends irrespective
of politics.
The iTocission massed on the lawn in
front of Mr. Scalls boose and th bands
played several of their choicest air. Wben
Mr Scull stepped out onto tbe veranda be
was heartily cheered by tbe crowd and Capt.
W. IL Allen, of Meyersdale. on behaif of
the tisiiors. in a few well chosen words ex
pressed the objactof tbe gathering and con
veyed to Mr. Scull the hearty congratula
tions of himself arid fellow citixens on bia
triumphant re-election.
Mr. Scnll responded at some length In
which he most cordially thanked those
present, his fellow citixens, neighbors and
friends, for this mark of their esteem and
good will and congratulated tbe Republicans
of tbe county on the gallant fight they had
made and the magnificent majority they
had .oiled op on Tuesday.
Brief speeches were made by Hon. A.J.
Colborn, Amos Finnegan, Esq., of Meyers
dale, and Capt. W H. Banner.
The visitors spent a pleasant evening in
Somerset and left for their hemes shortly
before midnight.

on October 27,
At the age of 19 be came to Somerset
county, and at Somerset and Petersburg ba
worked at bis trade as tailor, tan rht school,
and a part of the time filled the position of
Justice of the Peace for a period of 12 years.
At th age of 26 be was married to Lydia
Hugus of Somerset. They were the parent
of x sons and one danghter. Hi wife,
four sons and daughter still survive bim.
At tbe age of 30 be registered as a student at
law under Hon. Moses Hampton, of Som
erset, where be was admitted to tbe practice
of lav on January 31st 138.
He continued in active practice from the
time of his admias kin until within the past
ten years.
During thi time be was in partnership
with Chauncey Forward, Joshua F. Cox,
Rom Forward and Cyrus Meyers, aH well
known attorneys at tbe bar.
He was eminently a coonsellor at law, bis
opinion being sought by his associates in
tbe profession, and bis argu merit to the
Court being both comprehensive and Con
vincing. He was a member of the Presbyterian
church for many years, connecting himself
with that organization in this place in tbe
year 1S3J. He was a liberal supporter of the
church and a regular attendant at service
until be became too feeble to go out,

Gen. A. H. CoSroth was elected Chairnan
and F. W. Biesecker, Eq, Secretary. The
undersigned, appointed a committee to report
resolutions upon bia death, respectively sub

bave learned with sorrow of the death of
Samuel Gaitber, E , who was long a resi
dent of this borough, a lawyer of marked
ability having been admitted to tbe practice
in Somerset county in 1333 and coufinued

the time when failing health obliged bint to
retire. .

faithful to hi trust and acquitted himself
with great credit in tbe discharge of tbe du
ties of bis ofice.

a kind friend, an able lawyer and efficient
advocate, whose ability and integrity as of
a marked character and a model tor imita

Matrimony Measured.
In 1 IS per cent of all tbe men married
in Pennsylvania married woman older than
themselves, Eeighty per cant. jisrrid tbcan
younger than themselves, and tl remaining
7 per cent took wives their own ses. The
average age of tbe toen was twnty-eva
year, and of the women twenty-three ytars.
More is are married at twenty-tbrre, and
more women at twenty-one. Thi seem to
be the favorite time. A woman of fifty -nine
married a man of tbirty-ooc, and a girl of
twenty-three took an old man of seveoiy.
The youngest couple who ventured into mat
rimony was a boy of seventeen and a girl of
Cfteen. Where tbe men are older, the dif
ference in age varies, but where tbe women
are older, it rarely exceeds five years. Of
t,7 J6 women married, whose ages were
given, 4,065, or 27.3 per cent, were kss than
twenty year old.
